07:22<jm_>!which x11 driver
07:22<dpkg>To show the video driver used by your X server «egrep 'Load.*mod.*driv|UnloadModule' /var/log/Xorg.0.log». Also ask me about <fglrx>, <nvidia>, <which driver>, <nodriver>, <judd-hardware>.
07:23<blinky><nvidia>
07:23<jm_>you ask it by doing: /msg dpkg nvidia
07:24<jm_>but really, start with the first command
07:24<blinky>jm_: whats the !which command you typed?
07:24<jm_>blinky: I don't understand your question
07:24<blinky>you typed "!which x11 nvidia"
07:25<jm_>starting your text with "!" means you're addressing dpkg the bot, but we only do this when we want others to see a response, otherwise simply use "/msg dpkg foo" instead (no need to use ! this way)
07:25<blinky>ah ok cheers
07:25<jm_>"which x11 driver" is a factoid name, just like "nvidia" is

07:28<blinky>I have a GTX560 with 2 monitor attached, I have an intel onboard(i5 GPU) with another monitor installed. I did a fresh install yesterday of xUbuntu 13.10 and had all three running, albeit I have to deselect the intel and reselect it for it to work. I then installed the nvidia-319 driver and lost the intel monitor, removed them and installed the latest from the nvidia site and lost lightdm and the intel monitor. I also have one of the nvidia monitor

09:03<ompaul>david89: yes, you could leave it out at this point and on restart you could install taskselect but I prefer at the beginning
09:03<ompaul>klaus_: please speak english
09:03<david89>ompaul: I will leave it out and then install xfce4 from apt
09:04<ompaul>david89: you should consider apt-get install tasksel and then use the tasksel --list to do the business

09:05<david89>I shall try it then
09:05<david89>by work you mean also setting up a dm?

09:06<ompaul>david89: yes, and putting in gdm / kdm / whatever as appropriate

10:18<qmi>i am not sure though, how much debian binds itself to fhs
10:18<qmi>some debian gurus will tell you...:)
10:19<gizero>http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=122038
10:21<ompaul>gizero: so the way I do it is large platters called disk0 disk1 disk2 accept rdiff-backup data from servers and they are synced with other machines so you cross paths several times between the various backups having not just incremental but multisite
10:21<gizero>That's where I got the impression that it wasn't intended for local backups, but reading it more carefully I see that there doesn't appear to be a consensus on that
10:22<gizero>ompaul, Ok
10:22<qmi>according to tldp docs, local files are backed up under that.
10:22<ompaul>gizero: backups are not a matter of doing it, you can never have enough of them, to not have the file needed might just be a denial of service on the person who expects you to have it, just like the question about security, it is not if you are paranoid, but are you paranoid enough.

14:36<darklight_>for some reason my wireless card in debian seems to have quite a few issues, browsing the web is slower but worse of all when I try to ping something there are countless lost packages, the same does not happen on other distros
14:36<darklight_>I'm running wheezy with a 3.11 kernel and an atheros card using ath9k
14:37<sney>is that 3.11 kernel from wheezy-backports?
14:37<darklight_>sney: yes
14:37<sney>ok. hmm. normally ath9k nics are quite good

14:39<darklight_>I'm pretty sure I had the same issues on a rtl8192se , I ditched it because support in the kernel was broken from 3.10 onwards (not quite sure what the situation is now )

14:40<darklight_>also on opensuse with a 3.11 kernel I did not have issues
14:40<darklight_>not that I know of no
14:41<sney>maybe diff the configs of the debian and suse kernels and see what's different between them

14:43<sney>am i right to assume this is a laptop? and the other distributions you've tried were on the exact same laptop?
14:43<darklight_>sney: nope it's a desktop and yes other distributions were tried on the same machine
14:45<sney>ok. so if it's not hardware then there may be something with the driver itself, and if you look at the kernel configurations from one that worked vs. one that doesn't then you might have a clue as to what the issue is
14:45<sney>did the stock 3.2 wheezy kernel work?
14:45<darklight_>sney: I didn't test too much unfortunately I had other incompatibilities, I can test the rtl8192se card though assuming the bugs were fixed in 3.11 (a quick google shows that they shuld be)
14:46<darklight_>*should
14:46<darklight_>I'll try that, I'll report back in a few minutes

17:34<hadi>update-rc.d -f gdm remove is this the right command?

17:35<sney>remove it from startup that is
17:36<nevyn>hadi: how much ram does this "server" have?
17:36<sney>you'll probably want to remove network-manager as well, since that gets installed along with gnome, and will cause you a lot of headaches for a server

23:23<LtL>neo1691_: no it doesn't matter
23:24<neo1691_>LtL, if firmware-linux-nonfree is there in both backports and main, or suppose both main and updates, which one will apt-install

23:31<themill>neo1691_: in the absence of repo configuration (like backports) or pinning on your system, it will install the higher version package. Check the output of "apt-cache policy packagename".
23:33<neo1691_>themill, ah yes!!
23:34<neo1691_>themill, Yes, apt-get had installed the package from testing, as i added the nonfree part later
23:34<themill>mixing stable and testing is likely to end in tears
23:35<neo1691_>I included testing to upgrade to latest iceweasel
23:35<neo1691_>ill better uncomment testing :)
23:35<themill>mozilla.debian.net is a better plan
23:36<neo1691_>Hmm!! Yes! :)
23:36<neo1691_>Any way I can find out what packages are installed on my system from testing? Can't remember
23:37<themill>!which repo
23:37<dpkg>To see what repository a package may have come from, try http://svn.noreply.org/svn/weaselutils/trunk/apt-listrepository , or use dpkg -l | awk '/^.i/ {print $2}' | xargs apt-cache policy | awk '/^[a-z0-9.\-]+:/ {pkg=$1}; /\*\*\*/ {OFS="\t"; ver=$2; getline; print pkg,ver,$2,$3}', or ask me about <obsolete>, or http://people.debian.org/~dannf/apt-inventory, or <bdo list>, or <dmm list>
