03:52<jm_>!connection refused
03:52<dpkg>When a TCP connection (e.g. telnet somehost 80) gives the error "connection refused", it means that either the service in question is not running on the specified IP address at all (e.g. apache has died), or that a firewall has rejected your SYN packet and sent back a rejection packet to you. It's a VERY CLEAR, EXPLICIT error message and ALWAYS means one of those two things.

15:02<roughnecks>rostam: touch a file in your root named "/forcefsck", and reboot
15:03<roughnecks>used to work for me
15:03<sney>to do that automatically in case of power loss, etc you could have /forcefsck created on boot and then have a late-run initscript remove it on shutdown
15:03<rostam>roughnecks, oh that is great if it works, I have to test it.
15:03<Kiryx>Is it always safe to remove the packages which "were automatically installed and are no longer required" using "apt-get autoremove" ?

15:13<Kiryx>is there a place where I can read up on how aptitute and apt handle the packages in debian ?
15:15<roughnecks>you mean something more descriptive than manpages?
15:16<Kiryx>some backstory
15:16<Kiryx>I was always wondering why it was aptitute and apt-get
15:17<Kiryx>why wasn't one replaced by another
15:17<Kiryx>I'm not sure which was first
15:19<roughnecks>!why aptitude
15:19<dpkg>aptitude has more advanced conflict/dependency resolution and will often find a solution where apt-get gives up. It can be used from the command line like apt-get plus an interactive resolver makes it much easier to recover from broken dependencies. It has advanced search capabilities (see <aptitude search>). For some upgrades, apt-get is preferred (e.g. <lenny->squeeze>, <squeeze->wheezy>). http://tinyurl.com/3g4d4d9.
15:20<roughnecks>don't know if the bot has other clues
15:21<musca>!why not aptitude
15:21<dpkg>Aptitude is more memory intensive and slower than <apt-get>, the <ncurses> interface is always loaded regardless of being used or not. Moreover the resolver can sometimes produce unexpected results and most of <aptitude>'s former exclusive features are now available in <apt-get> as well. Ask me about <why aptitude> and see http://tinyurl.com/3g4d4d9.
15:21<roughnecks>:-)

15:37<babilen>Kiryx: As you seem to be interested in apt-get/aptitude and package managers in general I have to recommend apt-cudf to you which is an alternative dependency resolver for apt-get. Install it and use it with "apt-get --solver=aspcud ..." -- it really is quite good.

18:27<petn-randall>abrock: This is wheezy?
18:28<servidorv>hi
18:28<servidorv>is anyone there??
18:28<abrock>if wheezy = testing then yes. I always forget the name, but it is testing
18:28<abrock>servidorv: yes
18:28<servidorv>i have a question, i need to save this log files,
18:28<servidorv>and i wanted to know
18:28<servidorv>if saving them to /var/log
18:28<petn-randall>abrock: wheezy is stable, jessie is testing.
18:29<servidorv>will they be deleted or manages another way
18:29<servidorv>here is why i asked
18:29<servidorv>this log files grow very quick
18:29<servidorv>and i just had a problem on my server cause these files were taking all of the space
18:29<abrotman>they eventually should be deleted
18:30<abrock>petn-randall: my sources.list says "testing"
18:30<petn-randall>servidorv: Can you paste the output of 'ls -al /var/log/' to http://paste.debian.net?
18:30<petn-randall>abrock: That's supported in #debian-next. I recommend putting 'jessie' there, you're in for a big surprise when jessie gets released otherwise.
18:31<servidorv>http://paste.debian.net/74867/
18:31<servidorv>petn-randall: http://paste.debian.net/74867/
18:31<abrock>petn-randall: what will happen?
18:31<servidorv>i need something so that this files will only store 1 week log
18:32<servidorv>can that be done
18:32<servidorv>??
18:32<petn-randall>abrock: When jessie gets released, 'testing' will point to jessie+1, and that is empty on the first day and gets slowly filled, with lots of breakage during library transitions.
18:33<servidorv>or gie this files a max size
18:33<abrock>ok, I will change that later

18:34<petn-randall>servidorv: Those files hardly take up a few megs. This is not the reason you disk is full.
18:34<servidorv>yeah i just changed it
18:34<petn-randall>s/you/your/
18:35<servidorv>i just deleted them
18:35<servidorv>and the server started working again
18:35<servidorv>so i know it was those files
18:35<abrock>cryptsetup is vavilable from within the chrooted system, so I suppose that should work?
18:35<petn-randall>servidorv: You have < 10 MB of files in there, it's not the reason your disk is full!
18:36<petn-randall>servidorv: By deleting files you merely alleviated the symptoms.
18:36<abrock>I ran update-grub, it printed Generating grub.cfg, Found linux image..., Found initrd image..., done
18:37<petn-randall>abrock: Let's move this discussion to #debian-next, I'm there too, and it's the on-topic channel for testing. :)
18:37<servidorv>petn-randall: i know i had to delete them, the log files that couse the error, are beeing written by a cron job that runs every5 minutes (5 crons in total)
18:37<petn-randall>servidorv: Can you paste the output of 'df -h' please?

19:04<drzaco>Sorry about that this stuff is crazy coming from windows... Thank you.
19:04<petn-randall>drzaco: You also have permissions in windows ...
19:06<drzaco>petn-randall, Right but all you really have to do is log in as a admin. But I think I am gonna like this better. looks like there is more control.
19:06<inkbottle>Hi, I'm puzzled about copyright status of the file "md-gmm7m.pfb". It is probably all right since it is in http://packages.debian.org/wheezy/all/texlive-fonts-extra/filelist. But at the same time it is in a non free directory in http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/fonts/mathdesign. Probably the directory tree in ctan is wrong, but I'd like to have further information, eventually be sure about it.
19:08<petn-randall>drzaco: If the default user is allowed to do everything anyway, there's not much use in having file permissions. In your specific case it might make sense to have the owner of the file set to you, and the group set to www-data, with read and execute bits for the group.
19:10<drzaco>okay that makes sense
19:10<inkbottle>I put the question simultaneously on #latex, since they might have information too
