00:11<stderr_dk>I tend to notice when a lot of people join from the same host in a short time. It's usually a sign of spam coming soon...

00:11<twb>My plan is instead of putting everyone in audio, to just change the udev rule:

00:11-!-NavyaSree [~Navya@117.211.14.7] has joined #debian
00:12<stderr_dk>But maybe they're just trying to overflow debhelpers counter.
00:12<twb>Because I don't really care if other processes on the inmate desktops can use the audio system.
00:12<Guest4297>there are over 600 people here, and not much activity

00:13<stderr_dk>Guest4297: Some people stay online even when they're not here.
00:13<Guest4297>why?
00:13<stderr_dk>Personally because I'm to lazy to log out and the computer is running all the time anyway...
00:14<Guest4297>okay.
00:14<stderr_dk>Another reason for not so much activity could be that there are no questions...
00:14<stderr_dk>Got one?
00:14<Guest4297>who likes nexiuz
00:15<Guest4297>we should make a game

00:20<dpkg>libdvdcss is a free software library for unscrambling <CSS>-encrypted DVDs, not to be confused with <DeCSS>. It is not distributed by Debian due to legal concerns. 02:18<twb>Do linear instead of random writes.
02:19<twb>And don't use a filesystem; if you do, use one that doesn't use a journal or checksumming or a FAT. (The last pisses off flash devices with crap FTLs).

02:20<me>twb: so you are saying a big NO to fat32?
02:20<twb>Wikipedia lists USB2 Hi-Speed as "(effective throughput up to 35 MB/s or 280 Mbit/s)"
02:20<twb>me: for a modern USB key it probably doesn't matter.
02:20<twb>me: for an SD card or a ten-year-old USB key it'll kill it faster.
02:21<twb>But modern keys will have FTLs especially designed for FAT because everyone uses it, so it's unlikely to be a big deal.
02:21<twb>Also note that USB speed is the *bus* speed; if you have other devices (e.g. keyboard) on the same bus, they'll be chewing up a small amount.
02:21<me>i'm getting 15MB/s reads and 4MB/s writes max... A lot of times i'm writing at 1MB/s to 2MB/s...
02:22<twb>Those writes are probably maxed out on the flash layer, not the USB
02:22<twb>Linear writes will help with that.
02:22<twb>i.e. generate the file locally, then copy it all at once. Don't edit it directly on the USB key.
02:23<twb>That's very noticable if you install debian onto a USB, versus installing elsewhere then just dd'ing it over.

02:24<me>when i dd to a file on fat or ext2/ext4 I get a max of 4.5MB/s

02:25<twb>Front ports are often USB1

02:33<me>is there a way to force the particular flash drive to use the ehci?
02:33<stderr_dk>If the port doesn't support 2.0 there's not much you can do.
02:34<stderr_dk>Given that you have both ohci and ehci loaded, I suspect that some of your ports are 1.1 only and some support 2.0 (as twb also mentioned).
02:34<twb>Although they could be internal ports, like the touchpad
02:35<me>the laptop says that all the usbports are supposed to be 2.0...
02:35<me>I figured the touchpad and the webcam might be 1.1
02:35<twb>^ internal ports.
02:35<twb>Or even just ports on the board that aren't terminated anywhere.
02:35<twb>Or they just lied to you ;-)
02:36<me>assuming the port supports it, is there a way to force ehci on /dev/sdb for example?
02:37<twb>Plug it into a different port.
02:37<twb>lsusb or lshw should tell you which bus it's on

06:38<Radon_3>is there some ways I could totally disable remote access to my machine in debian?
06:39<Radon_3>I mean totally
06:39<nocturnal>disable ssh logins or restrict them to a user or group
06:39<Radon_3>nocturnal: how can I do that?
06:39<nocturnal>you can shutdown the service with sudo service ssh stop and disable it with insserv -r ssh
06:40<nocturnal>I don't know what else you could be running to allow remote access.
06:40<nocturnal>usually only ssh
06:41<babilen>dpkg: tell Radon_3 about disable service
06:41<babilen>In short: Use "update-rc.d disable sshd"
06:41<Radon_3>when I run 'service ssh stop' it says: "ssh: unrecognized service"
06:42<babilen>s/sshd/ssh :)
06:42<nocturnal>well a default minimal debian install doesn't even come with the ssh service iirc.
06:42<Radon_3>'insserv -r ssh' gives me this: 'insserv: ssh: No such file or directory'
06:42<babilen>Radon_3: Do you have it installed? (openssh-server that is) I mean you could also simply purge that if you don't want to use it.

06:48<Radon_3>Is there some online document I could read, so I could understand what would the problems be with denying incoming connections?

Define the default soundcard via ALSA -- Take a look at "cat /proc/asound/cards" and read "/msg dpkg alsa default" -- My personal recommendation would probably be PA, but knock yourself out.

16:06<vodkaabsolute>Hi
16:06<sney>hi.
16:08<vodkaabsolute>I have an old (stable) debian release..... I need to install ntfs-utils package but my system is not up-to-date , so I was looking if it is possible to install that package without upgrading the sistem
16:09<vodkaabsolute>I just need to mount an ntfs partition RW
16:10<sney>what debian version? there are still archives of the old stable releases available
16:10<vodkaabsolute>using uname this is the output: Linux debian 2.6.32-5-686
16:11<sney>oh, that's just squeeze. you want ntfs-3g
16:11<vodkaabsolute>yes, if possible
16:12<sney>squeeze is still supported, just have 'deb http://http.debian.net/debian squeeze main' in your sources.list and do 'apt-get install ntfs-3g'

16:16<sney>yes.
16:16<sney>!stable sources.list
16:16<dpkg>Despite the fact previous installers, countless websites and /usr/share/doc/apt/examples/sources.list (prior to apt 0.9.6) will tell you to do this, do *not* use "stable" in your sources.list; use the release code name instead (e.g. "wheezy"). Upgrading between releases is no longer trivial; make sure you read the <release notes> and ask me about <squeeze->wheezy>, <testing sources.list>, <wheezy sources.list>.
