01:48<Powermaniac>Hi, could someone possibly help me with this problem. I'm trying to install Debian on an old Compaq Presario c700 laptop and I'm able to run the live DVD but whennI try to install it, it says it can't detect the cd-rom drive...
01:49<jm_>can't you install packages from the net?
01:49-!-devil [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:50<Powermaniac>well it doesn't detect the WiFi card either...=\

01:51-!-trifolio6 [] has joined #debian

01:51<Powermaniac>umm that is another problem, I can't find the specs detailing nwhich card it has built it, can't I do lsusb or something so it tells me what hardware is in it?
01:52<dpkg>Support for your wireless LAN device is dependent on the chipset within. Don't know what you have? Ask me about <what's my wireless>. Atheros: <atheros>; Atmel: <atmel>; Broadcom: <broadcom>; Intel: <intel>; Intersil: <prism>; Marvell: <marvell>; Ralink: <ralink>; Realtek: <realtek>; TI: <acx-mac80211>; VIA: <vt665x>; ZyDAS: <zydas>. 01:52<Powermaniac>sort of a newbie to Linux, well learning
01:52<jm_>go to this url and it tells you how to find out which card it is
01:52<Powermaniac>okay thanks

02:04<Powermaniac>well that's odd lspci doesn't list any WiFi devices, but dmesg lists a wlanmatheros device but doesn't detail what model it is
02:05<Powermaniac>anyway to get dmesg to list more details or to somehow target the atheros device with another command to find out what model it is?
02:05<jm_>well maybe it's usb or pcmcia then

03:51<RealMurphy>Hi, if I created a metapackage depending on openjdk-jre which should pull in default-jre on Squeeze, but openjdk-7-jre on Wheezy and Jessie I can do this with Depends: openjdk-7-jre | default-jre. 04:29<redfox5>I downloaded the source for that earlier. Unless I have binary, I will need to compile.
04:30<redfox5>Which brings me back to trying to get gcc and the like on the laptop.
04:30<jm_>why are you downloading sources? grab the binary firmware package and install it, reload the driver and you should be able to configure networking
04:30<jm_>(use the URL I mentioned just now)
04:32<redfox5>Okay, okay. My fault. I didn't scroll down far enough to see the binary downloads by architecture. I just looked to the links on the right (i.e. source code and such).

07:11<Natureshadow>And remove hald ... wasn't that deprecated even before squeeze?
07:11<Natureshadow>Hmm, you do not need an older host system to compile an older package :)

07:12<RageRiot>I were advised on the wine forums newr distro can have build problems on older sorce
07:13<Natureshadow>RageRiot: that's why we do not listen to users on web forums ;) ... you can build an older package on a newer Debian most of the time, and if not, a chroot is completely sufficient
07:14<Natureshadow>I think the pbuilder tool needs nothing more than an argument to have it build a package under another distro
07:14<RageRiot>not sure what chroot really is

22:24<sney>there's no such thing as a udp ping

22:25<firechariot>well, the response to tcpdump is "udp port 11905 unreachable, length 130"
22:27<sney>then that is not icmp echo.

22:28<firechariot>sney, I'm trying to detect if I'm being pinged
22:28<sney>if it's really just an *individual* hitting you repeatedly then drop everything from that IP
22:28<firechariot>tcpdump will tell me if it's an individual pinging repeatedly?
22:29<sney>maybe. for a ccna and debian nerd I'm kind of embarassingly sparse on combining the two. but things like wireshark will at least show you src, dest, and port.
22:30<sney>it'd be more straightforward if you were running tcpdump/wireshark on the gateway, but I'm thinking the gateway for you is probably a consumer router or something from your ISP

23:23<ehler>So if I'm still a linux n00b, should I wait to try debian?
23:23<keantoken>cpufreq tells me my system is not compatible.
23:24<keantoken>ehler, it is a whole science figuring out how to just read the linux documentation.
23:24<keantoken>I still don't know how to do that very well.
23:25<sney>ehler: as you can see, there's a lot of support for debian. if you get stuck, ask IRC, and IRC will help. IMHO it's better than learning bad habits on ubuntu.

23:26<keantoken>If I hadn't had Ubuntu I never would have gotten into linux, else the learning curve is just too steep.
23:27<keantoken>I would have like to do it right the first time.
23:27<keantoken>But things have to be practical.
23:29<ehler>What advantages is Debian giving over Ubuntu exactly? I hear people raving about it, and I know it's a stronger base, but what else?
23:31<sney>stability, flexibility, ymmv

23:31<keantoken>Ubuntu has customizations that are pointless and in the way of people who can set up linux on their own.
23:31<keantoken>That's my understanding.
23:32<SamB>ehler: less silly changes, most of the time ...

23:34<sney>yes, debian does far less "hahaha here's this new change NOW DEAL WITH IT" than canonical. but that's partly because you have a pretty wide range of choices in debian already, so there's barely a 'standard' or 'default' environment

23:35<SamB>I meant more the part where things mostly change for actual reasons, rather than just for the sake of changing things. mostly.
