02:02<Powermaniac_>So hopefully someone can help me with this as I've hit a wall again. So I'm trying to setup a bridge with an ethernet and wireless connection. I have the wireless and ethernet connection added by now the wireless usb adapter just doesn't show any signs of activity I can't get it to connect to a network. Here is my /etc/network/interfaces: http://paste.debian.net/hidden/6547e3c5/ and this is my sudo ifconfig: http://paste.debian.

02:33<jm_>Powermaniac___: well I can't tell you - it depends on your settings/answers during installer (for dhcp - man interfaces)

02:33<stderr_dk>But as jm_ said...
02:34<Powermaniac___>okay well I shall try what stderr_do linked and if that doesn't work well I don't know maybe a new fresh install....yay...-_-
02:34<stderr_dk>Are you using dhcp or a static IP-address?

I have a system where one central wheezy server manages a few remote squeeze servers. this system requires their clocks to be in sync. the problem is that I recently joined the central wheezy server into an AD domain so it now uses the AD DC as NTP. while the remote squeeze servers use the debian pool since they're not in th

04:32<nocturnal>I adjusted the clock on the central server to match the remote ones, that solved the clock skew issue that the service they're hosting was experiencing.

04:33<nocturnal>really? so this could not be a symptom of using a different NTP server? the remote ones using the Debian pool and the central one using a Microsoft Windows DC

04:34<nocturnal>who knows
04:34<jm_>there would be little point in NTP if each server had different idea of time

07:45<kelkoobenoitr>hello: this is several days i am spending time on an issue with standard (2.6.32) squeeze in my institute:
07:46<kelkoobenoitr>we have a freeze on /dev/pts/* triggered by an nfs mount .
07:46<jm_>why are you still using squeeze?
07:47<Apollo>And that's a really really really really old kernel
07:47<kelkoobenoitr>because migrating several hundreds of compute machines + dspecific devices takes time ;)
07:47<kelkoobenoitr>not only the system, but the software used ... but this is not the point
07:48-!-miyamoto_ [~miyamoto@186.190.35.11] has joined #debian
07:48<kelkoobenoitr>that specific nfs mount is a netapp appliance made of 300 volumes

07:51<kelkoobenoitr>after 17 minutes (about) all /dev/pts/* are blocked for 20 seconds
07:52<kelkoobenoitr>evrything seems to run fine, as :
07:52<kelkoobenoitr>- while /dev/pts is frozen , et netcat still works
07:53<kelkoobenoitr>- while /dev/pts is frozen , *a* netcat still works
07:53<babilen>kelkoobenoitr: Mind trying the same thing with a newer kernel from squeeze-backports. And please start working on the upgrade to wheezy *now* as you only have until May
07:53<kelkoobenoitr>wheezy works fine
07:53<kelkoobenoitr>did not try yet with squeeze-backports
07:54-!-grandpasnet [~joshua@ip68-225-53-131.tc.ph.cox.net] has joined #debian
07:54<kelkoobenoitr>and yes we are working on the migration, but still we will have some machines left with squeeze, as we have internal hardware, with specific drivers that takes ages to be migrated
07:54<babilen>kelkoobenoitr: In either way we will blame the old versions, so ... ;)
07:55<babilen>kelkoobenoitr: And those drivers target 2.6.32 ?
07:55<kelkoobenoitr>yes
07:55<kelkoobenoitr>previous version was debian3 ... ;)
07:55<babilen>kelkoobenoitr: So a backported 3.2 wouldn't be an option anyway? Mind trying it anyway so that we know that it is a problem with that before we continue?
07:57<kelkoobenoitr>this is a good point, and i am almost sure it will fix the issue, but i would like to understand why a nfs mount freezes /dev/pts. I don't see where the connection is
07:57-!-Blue_Hat [~TwinKam20@184.170.34.17] has joined #debian
07:57<babilen>kelkoobenoitr: We can look into that, but I learned that it is a good idea to single out the problematic area first and to verify your assumptions before continuing

07:58<babilen>I mean we could look a lot at the code now, but *something* must have changed. If we know that it's the kernel we only have to check a few hundred thousand lines of code that changed ;)
07:58<kelkoobenoitr>you are right. it tooks us some time to identify what was freezing in first place, and what was the trigger
07:59<kelkoobenoitr>so i will try that and come back later on :D

14:10<blast007>rostam: the example-preseed.txt file makes mention that "d-i finish-install/reboot_in_progress note" will avoid the last message about the install being complete. So, perhaps removing that line from your preseed will make it stop on the installation complete message.

18:53<mreithub>Hi, I'm having trouble installing postgresql-9.1 inside a wheezy lxc container. The directory /etc/postgresql/ isn't created which causes the init-script to exit with code 0 in do_ctl_all
18:54<jordanm>!tell mreithub about confmiss
18:54<mreithub>!confmiss
18:54<dpkg>You have to especially tell the packaging system to reinstall config files because when they are gone, it is assumed that you want them to stay deleted. "aptitude -o DPkg::Options::='--force-confmiss' reinstall $packagename" will restore them (man dpkg for details). If the package uses <ucf> for config file management, ask me about <ucf confmiss>.
18:55<jordanm>mreithub: you can also restore them out of /var/lib/postgresql/9.1/
18:55<Devastator>jordanm can you take a look at my build log from iptables 1.4.21? I'm trying to backport it from sid, judd says it has all build-dependencies satisfied, but yet it doesn't build

19:04<mreithub>jordanm, thanks, just figured it out looking into apt's term.log: postgresql was installed before I generated the lxc-container's locales. That caused postgresql's install to fail (as you said): "The locale requested by the environment is invalid". Therefore, no cluster was created (but it printed the command for me to create it myself).
19:04<mreithub>jordanm, So i did that and it worked...

22:51<dualbus>me_: sometimes it's better to step back, and explain the why... it makes no sense for you to want to put /var in RAM; so, providing some insight might help you get better support

22:52<me_>dualbus: I am running a live system with persistence. I want to only let certain items persist through a reboot that actually need to persist.
22:53<me_>jordanm: I read through the man page... looks like only /var/local/ and /var/lib might be necessary?
22:53<jordanm>me_: as well as /var/tmp, /var/mail. and /var/cache
22:54<me_>why would var/tmp need to survive the reboot?
22:54-!-Rcart [~rcart@190.92.27.126] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
22:54<jordanm>me_: because that's what makes it different from /tmp
22:54<jordanm>me_: it's a tmp location that survives reboot
22:54<dualbus>Is it really that expensive to let others persist? You're heading for a road with many headaches when you find your production system is broken because you forgot to persist a dir
22:54<dualbus>me_: easy, just persist the whole /var, and live a happy life
22:55<me_>dualbus: I was considering that, but I also need to minimize the number of writes...
22:56<dualbus>me_: isn't that the point of having a tuned up cache layer?
22:56<me_>so any data that will be written often stays in ram, and only things that need to survive the reboot go to flash
22:56<me_>is there a need when the entire OS runs in ram?
22:57<me_>clarification - my entire debian system runs in ram...
22:57<jordanm>for embedded systems? no
22:58<jordanm>since all the needed data would usually by copied from firmware in NVRAM or something anyways
22:58<me_>when the system boots up, it copies everything from flash to ram. any changes that need to persist a reboot get written to flash

23:57<waxhead>I have a NEC dvd player that works fine if my BIOS is set to IDE mode but when configured as AHCI it does show up at ata5.00 when doing dmesg | grep NEC. However I can't find it under /dev at all. Any advice on where I go from here to figure out what "stops it" ?!

23:59<waxhead>SamB just about "everywhere" :)
