02:02<Powermaniac_>So hopefully someone can help me with this as I've hit a wall again. So I'm trying to setup a bridge with an ethernet and wireless connection. I have the wireless and ethernet connection added by now the wireless usb adapter just doesn't show any signs of activity I can't get it to connect to a network. Here is my /etc/network/interfaces: and this is my sudo ifconfig: http://paste.debian.

04:32<nocturnal>I adjusted the clock on the central server to match the remote ones, that solved the clock skew issue that the service they're hosting was experiencing.
04:32<nocturnal>but I'm afraid it will return as long as the central server uses a different NTP

04:33<nocturnal>really? so this could not be a symptom of using a different NTP server? the remote ones using the Debian pool and the central one using a Microsoft Windows DC
04:33<bhuddah>nocturnal: is the windows domain time synched to a reliable clock?
04:34<nocturnal>who knows
04:34<jm_>there would be little point in NTP if each server had different idea of time
04:34<nocturnal>if the time keeps drifting, then I assume I should troubleshoot the windows DC
04:34<nocturnal>its time
04:34<jm_>you should probably sync that to a reliable source yes
04:34<nocturnal>ok thanks
04:34<nocturnal>just making sure I'm approaching this right. I'm not 100% sure of how NTP works
04:35<stderr_dk>Might want to check for blocked ports...
04:35<stderr_dk>Port 123.
04:35<nocturnal>yes it's a long list of ports that are opened for the AD join but I'm sure I've already verified that ntp works. partly through logs and partly through tcpdump.

07:45<kelkoobenoitr>hello: this is several days i am spending time on an issue with standard (2.6.32) squeeze in my institute:
07:46<kelkoobenoitr>we have a freeze on /dev/pts/* triggered by an nfs mount .
07:46<jm_>why are you still using squeeze?
07:47<Apollo>And that's a really really really really old kernel
07:47<kelkoobenoitr>because migrating several hundreds of compute machines + dspecific devices takes time ;)
07:47<kelkoobenoitr>not only the system, but the software used ... but this is not the point
07:48-!-miyamoto_ [~miyamoto@] has joined #debian
07:48<kelkoobenoitr>that specific nfs mount is a netapp appliance made of 300 volumes

07:51<kelkoobenoitr>after 17 minutes (about) all /dev/pts/* are blocked for 20 seconds
07:52<kelkoobenoitr>evrything seems to run fine, as :
07:52<kelkoobenoitr>- while /dev/pts is frozen , et netcat still works
07:53<kelkoobenoitr>- while /dev/pts is frozen , *a* netcat still works
07:53<babilen>kelkoobenoitr: Mind trying the same thing with a newer kernel from squeeze-backports. And please start working on the upgrade to wheezy *now* as you only have until May
07:53<kelkoobenoitr>wheezy works fine
07:53<kelkoobenoitr>did not try yet with squeeze-backports
07:54-!-grandpasnet [] has joined #debian
07:54<kelkoobenoitr>and yes we are working on the migration, but still we will have some machines left with squeeze, as we have internal hardware, with specific drivers that takes ages to be migrated
07:54<babilen>kelkoobenoitr: In either way we will blame the old versions, so ... ;)
07:55<babilen>kelkoobenoitr: And those drivers target 2.6.32 ?
07:55<kelkoobenoitr>previous version was debian3 ... ;)
07:55<babilen>kelkoobenoitr: So a backported 3.2 wouldn't be an option anyway? Mind trying it anyway so that we know that it is a problem with that before we continue?
07:57<kelkoobenoitr>this is a good point, and i am almost sure it will fix the issue, but i would like to understand why a nfs mount freezes /dev/pts. I don't see where the connection is
07:57-!-Blue_Hat [~TwinKam20@] has joined #debian
07:57<babilen>kelkoobenoitr: We can look into that, but I learned that it is a good idea to single out the problematic area first and to verify your assumptions before continuing

07:58<babilen>I mean we could look a lot at the code now, but *something* must have changed. If we know that it's the kernel we only have to check a few hundred thousand lines of code that changed ;)
07:58<kelkoobenoitr>you are right. it tooks us some time to identify what was freezing in first place, and what was the trigger
07:59<kelkoobenoitr>so i will try that and come back later on :D

14:10<blast007>rostam: the example-preseed.txt file makes mention that "d-i finish-install/reboot_in_progress note" will avoid the last message about the install being complete. So, perhaps removing that line from your preseed will make it stop on the installation complete message.

22:07<me_>today I'm thinking that maybe my /etc/apt/preferences file was messed up and that might have been the reason it brought in both...
22:07<RageRiot>well I've spent over a week so far trying to migrate a service from a windows server to a debian deicated server

22:09<RageRiot> the custom kernel hasnt been provided with headers

22:35<keantoken>Is there a way to install different desktop managers without having all the launchers thrown into the same menu?
22:35<keantoken>For instance having both a Gnome version and an Xfce version of the same program when you open the menu on Xfce.
22:35<keantoken>It seems like a terrible problem yet no one has done anything about it AFAIK.
22:37<sney>generally there aren't separate launchers for the same program. if you mean where it says "gnome terminal" vs "xfce terminal" etc those are actually separate programs, packaged separately
22:37<sney>if a program launcher is actually duplicated, that is a bug and you should file a bug report

22:53<me_>jordanm: I read through the man page... looks like only /var/local/ and /var/lib might be necessary?
22:53<jordanm>me_: as well as /var/tmp, /var/mail. and /var/cache
22:54<me_>why would var/tmp need to survive the reboot?
22:54-!-Rcart [~rcart@] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
22:54<jordanm>me_: because that's what makes it different from /tmp
22:54<jordanm>me_: it's a tmp location that survives reboot
22:54<dualbus>Is it really that expensive to let others persist? You're heading for a road with many headaches when you find your production system is broken because you forgot to persist a dir
22:54<dualbus>me_: easy, just persist the whole /var, and live a happy life
22:55<me_>dualbus: I was considering that, but I also need to minimize the number of writes...
22:56<dualbus>me_: isn't that the point of having a tuned up cache layer?
22:56<me_>so any data that will be written often stays in ram, and only things that need to survive the reboot go to flash
22:56<me_>is there a need when the entire OS runs in ram?
22:57<me_>clarification - my entire debian system runs in ram...
22:57<jordanm>for embedded systems? no
22:58<jordanm>since all the needed data would usually by copied from firmware in NVRAM or something anyways
22:58<me_>when the system boots up, it copies everything from flash to ram. any changes that need to persist a reboot get written to flash
