01:56<aqvervb>Hi all, I needed to (exact) copy a Debian 6 installation to another server. The 'tricky' part: both machines are off site and headless (but can be booted from rescue media (plain linux, cannot choose a CD or such) and are available in terminal). What was the easiest way to achieve that?

04:23<Eax_>Hi there! :) I am trying to install Debian on my Zotac machine, however I have run in to a spot of trouble: I have "burned" Stable_NetInstall_x64 to a USB Stick using UnetBootin, have gone through the installation screen, but the installer is hanging at "Scanning disks..." (50%), I have googled this error, but none of the answers worked. Any ideas? Thanks! :)

04:32<dpkg>UNetbootin (Universal Netboot Installer) allows creation of bootable USB drives for a variety of Linux distributions. Not recommended for use with Debian CD/DVD images, as it mangles the installer in cruel and unusual ways, resulting in hard to debug problems. Ask me about <hybrid images>, <usb install>, <win32diskimager>.
04:33<Eax_>sakax: Gotcha, what the heck should I do instead? The machine has no CD/DVD drive
04:35<SamB>Eax_: cp image.iso /dev/<your USB stick> ?
04:35<dpkg>Release notes for Debian 7 "Wheezy" are at . See also <squeeze->wheezy>, <install guide>.
04:36<sakax>Eax_: unetbootin destroys the installer, use SamB command or the one mentioned in the FAQ
04:36<Eax_>SamB: Can't, am running Windows on the only other available machien :/
04:36<SamB>hmm, well, maybe rawwritent still works?
04:36<dpkg>RawWrite is a Windows GUI for the <rawrite> utility, which operates under modern Windows versions. . For a more flexible utility (e.g. writing to USB stick, CF card), ask me about <win32 dd>.
04:37<Eax_>Awesome, thanks SamB :)

10:40<aqverva>Hi all, asked that this morning, was disconnected later. Hope re-asking is not flooding/spamming.
10:41<aqverva>I needed to (exact) copy a Debian 6 installation to another server. The 'tricky' part: both machines are off site and headless (but can be booted from rescue media (plain linux, cannot choose a CD or such) and are available in terminal). What was the easiest way to achieve that?
10:43<Volley>aqverva: you mean your have a specific rescue media and with that you want to clone the server? well ... dd should be available everywhere, ... so the safest thing would probably create a image with dd ... eventually compressed ...
10:43<Ganneff>if you have working network, and they are the same or very similar: login to both, dd if=/dev/$disk of=- | $network | dd if=- of=/dev/$disk, with $disk replaced by whatever device your harddisc is, $network can be ssh or netcat or some such

10:45<aqverva>Volley, Ganneff: thx for your answers! The rescue media is provided by the hoster, but will be 'any' linux. Network is available but insecure. I'll try your command, Ganneff
10:46<aqverva>Ganneff: Do I have to shut down the source machine or can I leave it running (was favoured much for less downtime)?
10:46-!-gyx [~gyx__@2607:f470:24:3:3d62:129b:bfa5:79b8] has joined #debian
10:47<Volley>aqverva: maybe i did misinterpret your "off site" a bit ... so you have network connection to both, you just can't physically go there?
10:48<aqverva>yes, volley, these are dedicated (PC-) Servers in different computing centers
10:48<Volley>if you want to minimize downtime and if you have a lot of data to copy, you might want to do some (maybe hackish) incremental rsync approach
10:48-!-REalm [] has joined #debian
10:48<aqverva>actually I want to move 'my' server to another provider who does not provide 'my' linux distro
10:49<aqverva>Volley: I run CMWare server on the source machine. 1st step was to setup anything except /vmware
10:49<Ganneff>aqverva: mine is doing an identical copy on a basically fresh new system. so if you keep the old running, you will transfer an inconsistent state.
10:49<aqverva>later I copy the huge amount of data
10:50<aqverva>so I took yours as 'last resort', Ganneff ;)
10:50<Ganneff>if thats unwanted, you can install the new machine, do a sync of packages (dpkg --get-selections and --set-selections), then see for config stuff and for the data have rsync transfer it.
10:50<Ganneff>then massage the new together as much as you want it, and when you like it, do another rsync for the data. then turn off old. rsync again for the last minute changes. then turn services on on new.
10:51<aqverva>the real trouble is that the new hoster installed a pretty weird kernel and VMWare requires fitting kernel modules
10:51<Volley>but it depends a bit on what services you have running and so on: you boot the target server with some rescue system and prepare the filesystems. mount them. on the source machine you mount --bind all stuff to some temp location and rsync it to the new server. once finished, repeat 1-2x, then finally shut down all services on the source, rsync a last time, install bootloader on the target and reboot the target. could work :)
10:51<Ganneff>(have dns ttl and stuff set very low, and on/off includes dns changes)
10:51-!-AbsintheSyringe [] has joined #debian
10:51<Ganneff>you wont get an exact line of commands to follow here, but one of those ways we mentioned will be the road to follow.
10:52<aqverva>yeah, Ganneff, I am a Win (and networking) syseng, just no lx pro :(
10:52<Ganneff>depends on how much they are the same and how much downtime/error can be there
10:52<aqverva>servers are pretty much the same. same proc, same disks (target 1cyl larger)
10:53<Ganneff>then dd is a nice way - even though one with outage
10:53<aqverva>I would go with an exact copy and just if that did not work try sth else
10:53<Ganneff>(you will have to adjust IP addresses obviously in the new system)
10:53<Volley>ok, so if you are more a win guy you probably didn't make much sense of my rsync approach :)
10:54<aqverva>sorry, Volley, if we woud not exist you weren't leet ;)
10:55<aqverva>I try the dd approach. Does that install (copy) grub too or what will I have to do after dd-ing to make the new machine boot?

10:59<Volley>dd is used to copy things "as it is". you can specify start and end and stuff like that, but what you basically do is binary clone stuff. which is a safe and convenient way to clone a installation, but if you want to reduce downtime, etc ... you maybe need a different approach
11:00<aqverva>Volley, the few I know about dd is that I can dd /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2 too?!

14:59<SynrG>there is a package (sorry, i will have to work to remember its name, and someone else here may provide it for me :) that you can use that will manage installs from stuff you've built from source and allow you to remove them

23:38<SamB>I thought clients connect to servers!
23:39<greenbagels>Deleted my Debian partitions and now I can't boot to Windows

23:40<sney>gotta delete the mbr too, greenbagels
23:41<greenbagels>Can I do that from the install CD?
23:41<SamB>um, I don't think "delete" is what we want here
23:41<greenbagels>More like fix
23:42<sney>windows doesn't use the mbr for booting. wiping out the mbr is generally the solution to return your access to windows. or try installing debian again and let grub do its job
23:43<greenbagels>GRUB was the issue I had
23:44<sney>I thought you had a network problem.
23:44<greenbagels>With the 7.3.0 netinstall image
23:44<greenbagels>Now I'm using the 7.2.0 DVDs I have

23:51<SamB>anyway, you should be careful to find out where the bootloader is stored *before* deleting partitions in the future ...
23:52<greenbagels>Can I fix it?
23:52<greenbagels>I'm reinstalling debian
23:52<SamB>that should be sufficient, yes
23:53<greenbagels>With everything how it was before?
23:53<greenbagels>I had the efi on the same drive as windows before but now I put it on the same drive as the root directory
23:54<greenbagels>On a second drive
23:54<SamB>hmm, I don't know if that will leave able to boot Windows or not
23:54<SamB>I don't know much about EFI
23:54<greenbagels>Can't I still add a grub entry for windows
