02:12<nocturna1>speaking of isc, I'm using the isc-dhcp-server package and my leases file is growing out of control. I mean it's filling up 20G of disk space, and now I have expanded the disk. starting dhcpd with such a large file is impossible. what I do when I need to restart is I move the file to the backup file and then start.
02:12<nocturna1>the dhcpd is serving a very large network, tens of thousands of clients, but I don't see why it should use 20G for leases.

05:30<babilen>def_: You should never mix stable with *anything* but backports. In particular you shouldn't mix releases as that will, eventually, break your system and you might end up in a situation in which you have to reinstall. If there is no official <backport> you might be able to create one yourself by following the instructions in <ssb> (/msg dpkg ssb)
05:31<babilen>kminor: Please don't advocate mixing stable with sid or running production systems on sid. The concept of "funner repo's" is not applicable in most cases and please bear the ramifications of your advice in here in mind.

10:21<Fenhl>hello. I'm wondering, what's the difference between sid and experimental?
10:21<dpkg>methinks sid is the codename for <unstable>, named after the kid in Toy Story that breaks toys. The great thing about running sid is that, when it breaks you get to keep ALL the pieces!!
10:21<dpkg>experimental is the bleeding edge of Debian Development. Packages here have been deemed unfit/DANGEROUS/untrustworthy/etc for release by the maintainer responsible for them. DO NOT INSTALL PACKAGES FROM EXPERIMENTAL WITHOUT KNOWING EXACTLY WHY AND WHAT YOU ARE DOING. #debian does _not_ support experimental. For an actual description, see section of the Developer's Reference.

13:13<petn-randall>dduvnjak: with iftop you will have two ip:port tuples for each connection. Figure out which IP address is yours, then write down the port to it and find it with 'netstat -anp' or 'netstat -npl'. It will then show you the process id and name to to that connection.

13:46<ubuntu-studio>ok thanks
13:46<mgv>!ubuntu studio
13:46<dpkg>studio: Please take your Ubuntu question to #ubuntu on as they are able to help you much better with Ubuntu questions than #debian. Ubuntu can be quite different from Debian, #debian is not just a version of #ubuntu for advanced Ubuntu users.
13:49<ubuntu-studio>debian is good i use Kali some times its a great os but today is ubuntu studio day. ya'll have a good day.
13:50<dpkg>Kali Linux ( is a security and penetration testing distribution from the creators of <backtrack>. It is based on Debian, but it is not Debian and is not supported in #debian. Seek help in #kali-linux on or . Also ask me about <based on debian>.
13:51<ompaul>so I guess you don't use debian just stuff that is not the same name or distro ...

21:47<themill>Devastator: I've never played with this, but I'd assume that anything pertaining to that interface in /e/n/interfaces ends up in an IF_ variable. My suggestion would be to try it and see :) a call to "env > /tmp/foo" is pretty easy to include in a script so you can find out.
