00:00-!-Oregonian [~fuckkkkk@rrcs-96-10-57-157.se.biz.rr.com] has quit []
00:00<jordanm>colt: apt-get source linux
00:00<me>sney, colt : I appreciate the help, when I do hwclock -s it sets the correct time, but after a few seconds it reverts back...
00:01<Devastator>is your bios time setup correctly?
00:01<Devastator>or maybe some script is changing the time
00:01<jordanm>colt: I have a book "understanding the linux kernel" that's nearly 1k pages
00:02<jordanm>colt: so it's not likely something you will hack on for a day or two had have an understanding on
00:02<colt>me: That's strange...mine stays synchronized.
00:03-!-annodomini [~lambda@000161aa.user.oftc.net] has joined #debian
00:03<oitofelix>colt: After you get some understanding of the kernel, please start calling it "linux, the kernel" ;-)
00:04<colt>oitofelix: o_O Why's that?
00:05<oitofelix>colt: http://www.gnu.org/gnu/gnu-linux-faq.html
00:06-!-artista_frustrado [~Artista@00012e3e.user.oftc.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:08<colt>jordanm: yeah...probably like a week. :P
00:08-!-Auroch [~Auroch@host-85-201-84-190.brutele.be] has joined #debian
00:08<colt>jordanm: Seriously, though the intel x86_64 system programmer's manual is worse 4k pages. So if you ever badly need a sleep-aid...
00:09<jordanm>colt: I have a book on investing for my sleep-aid needs :)
00:10<colt>Ooh. Yup, that'll do it. Law textbooks take the cake though, if I had to guess.
00:12-!-eebrah [~eebrah@105.231.4.206] has joined #debian
00:13-!-Noskcaj [~Noskcaj@101.161.73.118] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:14<colt>Is there anything wrong with using 'echo -n mem > /sys/power/state' for suspending? It was among the first of my google results, but most of the results reccommended various different programs and packages instead.
00:14-!-thunderrd [~thunderrd@119.42.76.16] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]

00:21<rryoumaa>if i want to file a bug report on a package, and i think it might be an upstream bug too, do i still file it against debian?
00:21-!-Noskcaj [~Noskcaj@CPE-124-183-82-144.lns13.ken.bigpond.net.au] has joined #debian
00:22<jordanm>rryoumaa: yes, that's acceptable. typically the maintainer (who should already have contact with upstream) will forward the bug and tag it "upstream"
00:23-!-smulverine [~smulverin@n219078245072.netvigator.com] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:23<jordanm>although from my own packaging experiences, upstream doesn't always care to interact with debian maintainers of their software
00:23-!-thunderrd [~thunderrd@119.42.76.16] has joined #debian
00:24<rryoumaa>jordanm: so i can do it either way? also, can a bug be filed solely by email?
00:24<rryoumaa>i hate web interfaces and registering and stuff
00:24<jordanm>rryoumaa: yes and yes
00:24<jordanm>rryoumaa: there are no web interfaces, email is your only option
00:24<chealer>rryoumaa: unless you're quite sure, it's best to file against Debian only
00:25<rryoumaa>great, thanks. i will file against debian. what is the address?
00:25<chealer>rryoumaa: although if you suspect it's upstream, you may want to check upstream's ITS first

00:27<rryoumaa>ah, i found http://www.debian.org/Bugs/Reporting so i suppose reportbug will give me the email address
00:29<rryoumaa>huh, it's on iceweasel and reportbug says my bpo is out of date and experimental is newer. but i am using the mozilla repo version. i thought that was official.
00:30<rryoumaa>(the debian mozilla repo, that is, not mozilla's if they have one)

04:00<dodobirdie>no swap is it man

04:04<Al3xG0>I can not stand windows want to pass to the native debian
04:04<SamB>I mean it's basically always been a method to become slow instead of killing processes; it's just that it's gotten relatively *slower* over the years ...
04:04<valdyn>for example, on a typical server you might prefer your system to become very slow instead of killing processes

08:20<SynrG>looking back at your log
08:21<SynrG>Get:9 http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ wheezy/main linux-image-3.2.0-4-686-pae i386 3.2.54-2 [22.9 MB]

08:21<SynrG>this doesn't say security.d.o. and it doesn't say wheezy-updates ... so you know it has made it to the stable release.
08:22<SynrG>so basically all you're seeing here is the archive now is updated. this is the 7.4 release weekend ...
08:22<themill>!7.4
08:22<dpkg>The fourth <point release> for Debian 7 "Wheezy" (7.4) is scheduled for February 8th, 2014. This point release will correct some serious bugs and copy security updates across to the main archive. https://lists.debian.org/debian-stable-announce/2014/02/msg00000.html
08:22<SynrG>so, nothing alarming about this :)
08:22<Radon_3>the changelog in that gz file reads like this: http://tny.cz/fa0b00b1
08:23<SynrG>Radon_3: so this now answers your original question. "is there somewhere I could see the release date of packages?"
08:23<SynrG>this is not precisely when it hit the archive, but only when the developer changed it.
08:24<SynrG>the web indices are definitely out of date
08:24<SynrG>they'll catch up soon.

08:24<Radon_3>yeah, and I think this is all because I am new to debian, I am embarrassed a little bit, also the fact that I am a bit paranoid and want everything to be stable. thank you for baring with me

08:25<SynrG>also, looking at the log of your install shows "where did this come from?" and the version# ... also "apt-cache policy <nameofpackage>" not only tells you what the version# is, but where it came from
08:25<SynrG>no problem. this is your first point-release upgrade?

08:28<Radon_3>:) but I think I am completely addicted to debian now... I can't even bother logging into windows, which is totally fine. I got all I need in debian
08:28<SynrG>actually that does include security fixes.
08:29<SynrG>and the 'urgency' thing we were looking at before was the most recent update to the package in 7.3 ... not the current one.

17:46<ectospasm>I'm setting up a Debian wifi router, using dnsmasq, hostapd, and iptables. I see in the log that my laptop is sending DHCPDISCOVER, requesting it's old IP address (it was set statically via DHCP before I moved). dnsmasq appears to be sending an offer, but the laptop never seems to connect (nm-applet never shows the "bars" icon)
17:47<ectospasm>My phone seems to have the same problem, it never gets an IP address.
17:47<ectospasm>This would lead me to think it's iptables, but I don't see anything which could be the culprit
