00:15<Guest102>I've got a newb question. With other distros like Ubuntu, when you want to download it, it makes it simple. 32/64 and what version. I'm downloading Squeeze for 64, but I'm confused why there are so so many CDs for it. I've read the FAQ for it but it didn't explain it very well. Why are there so many CDs and how can you tell one from another?

00:17<themill>If you go to www.debian.org rather than to the cd mirror you get simple links to the images you can use (also, you probably want wheezy not squeeze)
00:20<Guest102>Thanks. I'm getting squeeze because Openmediavault is built for it. I figured I'd get sqeeze first so I have a GUI. I'm not good at just CLI yet

00:25<themill>as in, I don't think you can install openmediavault afterwards. My understanding is that it's a derivative distribution not a separate application (and you'll d better in #openmediavault on irc.freenode.net)

01:16<keltor>jm_: yes i've done that, rebooted - tried some other things as well
01:16<keltor>it's baffling
01:17<jm_>keltor: what's in Xorg.0.log when you start it with gdm?
01:18<keltor>jm_: well there's a nouveau attempt to load then an failback to fbdev
01:18<keltor>apparently gdm3 doesn't like fbdev so I get a Oh no! Something's gone wrong.
01:19<jm_>keltor: yes but it also mentions config file(s) used, have you looked there?
01:20<karadoc>I'm about to attempt to image my hard drive using the following command:
01:20<karadoc>dd if=/dev/sda conv=sync,noerror bs=1M | gzip -c > "/media/zac's portable HHD/old_computer.img.gz"
01:20<karadoc> Please let me know if you think this might not work!

01:20-!-cads [~m@24-159-101-83.dhcp.gwnt.ga.charter.com] has joined #debian
01:21<jm_>why would you use dd and not something like partimage?
01:21<karadoc>Well, mostly because I don't know what I'm doing and I've heard dd can do what I want it to do.
01:21<karadoc>I don't know of partimage, but other image stuff I've looked into won't save data on hidden partitions and stuff like that.
01:22<karadoc>I want the whole thing imaged, including the partition table.
01:23<karadoc>the idea is that if debian doesn't work well or whatever, I want to be able to restore my old OS exactly how it was.
01:24<jm_>then that should be OK as long as sda is the right device, might get an error at the end if device size is not multiple of chosen "bs"
01:24<keltor>jm_: i created a xorg.conf with Xorg -configure then swapped to the nvidia driver - now it seems to work. It's probably something broken existing on my system
01:25<karadoc>if it isn't a multible of bs, I presume it will pad the end with zeros and that this won't be a problem if I try to copy it back to the hard drive. Is that right?
01:27-!-isaacd [~quassel@66-189-34-122.dhcp.oxfr.ma.charter.com] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
01:27<jm_>AFAIK it just says it read less than "bs" and doesn't pad anything
01:28-!-MMavipc [~crapmail@ip72-197-231-41.sd.sd.cox.net] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
01:30<keltor>that's what happens
01:30<keltor>and 1M is pretty much the right choice
01:30<keltor>otherwise with some SSDs you get some weird behavior
01:30-!-me [~me@cpe-67-251-6-241.maine.res.rr.com] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
01:31<karadoc>keltor: which is what happens? What I said, or what jm_ said?
01:31<jm_>I never use bs= with anything, it just works
01:31<keltor>karadoc: it just writes less than the blocksize and give sa warning
01:32-!-me [~me@cpe-67-251-6-241.maine.res.rr.com] has joined #debian
01:32<keltor>jm_: in most cases that just means you typed bs=1k, but with most sata/sas devices that can take much longer

01:32<keltor>if everything underlying works right of course it really shouldn't
01:32<karadoc>ok. fair enough. I guess it doesn't matter much anyway as long as it doesn't just skip the last bit of data just because it don't fill a block.
01:32<keltor>but hey fun times
01:32<keltor>karadoc: I honestly use bacula for my backups rather than trying to use dd

01:33<karadoc>well, I'm kind of psyched and ready to just do this with dd anyway. So I think I'll just go ahead with it this time, and try to remember bacula for next time. :)
01:34<karadoc>I don't expect that I'll ever need to use this backup anyway. I just think it would be unwise to not make it..

01:41<karadoc>so with that, and running it through dd, I expect the empty bits to compress to near nothing.

05:44<karadoc>when installed, does this firmware live on the wireless hardware itself? ie, if I decide to wipe my hard drive and install some other OS, the firmware that we're talking about now would still be installed, right?
05:44<mjt>no
05:44<mjt>it is loaded each time you boot the system
05:44<karadoc>isn't that what firmware means?
05:45<mjt>firmware needs to be loaded because the hardware does not have place to keep it over reboot
05:45<karadoc>In that case, I'm struggling to understand the difference between firmware and a driver.
05:46<karadoc>I'd think of a driver as something that loads when you boot, and controls the hardware in some way.

12:27<mju>instigator: It makes a huge difference if you run "sudo script" or just "script". You should not run "sudo script" unless you know what you are doing. It runs the script with maximal rights. Therefore, I suppose, sudo also cleans up the path: to prevent mistakes or possible attacks.

12:55<musca>de9897: so your xserver was most likely autoconfigured to use the free nouveau driver.
12:56<de9897>Ok. So to make sure I understand. I buy hardware and pay money to own the device. Then the manufactors tells me where I can and cannot use the device, I also must allow them to spy on all of my data in order to use the hardware that I own and paid for

14:57<SynrG>Fenhl: if you check your logs, you were answered. musca said:
14:57<ompaul>dd if=/dev/cdrom of=image_name.iso ; mkisofs -r -o image_name.iso /dev/cdrom man mkisofs for lots of better options like making the burn slow
14:57<SynrG>!wodim
14:57<dpkg>wodim ("write optical disk media") is a <DFSG> compliant fork of <cdrecord>, part of <cdrkit> and available in the wodim package. See http://lwn.net/Articles/198171/ for the release notice. Use -pad for .wav files when burning audio. Use -swab if your CDR uses little endian or .cdr is in big endian -- basically if the audio on CD is static, use -swab.

15:00<angrydev>hey all, after doing apt-get update and upgrade, i'm told that libpurple0 and pidgin-data have been kept back. apt-cache policy tells me that the version from wheezy/main is taking precedence over the version from wheezy/updates. do i have something set up wrong or is that what's supposed to happen?
15:01<ompaul>apt-get update ; apt-get dist-upgrade and see how you go

23:07<kardan>there has been a lot talk about systemd lately and I am currently reading in the manual (instead the ML/bug report) and just saw the feature that error codes are caught. does this mean, all messages a daemon spits out during boot (and so far did not show up in logs) won't be wasted in the future?

23:10<Infiltrator>kardan: You're probably better off asking in #debian-next, as systemd will not be in wheezy.
