00:33<Gorgor>Hello, I've had my new install crash 2 or 3 times now, and each time it was in a user account on the gnome desktop, and it seems that it occurs by some random act of when my mouse hovers over the activity thing
00:33-!-gyx [~gyx__@2607:f470:24:3:a54b:5e9f:31cf:9625] has joined #debian

00:33<Gorgor>and I can't ctrl+alt+f1-6 or anything out of it
00:34<Gorgor>it just sticks there, and i have to reboot
00:34<Gorgor>i looked on the net and it seems lots of people get a similar conflagration of the problem, but it looks like bugreports is mostly dead about it
00:35<Gorgor>when i installed the system, i failed twice using both the graphical and nongraphical expert install modes when i chose the GUI environment, mirrors just died and computer died about 37% into the total download, with core-utils
00:35-!-nice92 [~nnscript@AMontsouris-652-1-57-162.w92-163.abo.wanadoo.fr] has joined #debian
00:35<Gorgor>so i chose a new mirror to get the basic system in and just installed core utils then the gui after, so there's probably a problem with the netinstall too
00:36-!-smulverine [~smulverin@n219078245072.netvigator.com] has joined #debian
00:36<Gorgor>so i don't know what to do, i can do things on command line pretty good if i have to, i think there's even programs for reading pdf files on it

00:38<Gorgor>this is on wheezy, but i seen from google people having problems on redhat and ubuntu and what's that others, all kinds of them anyways - most of them say they can at least escape out of the freeze though
00:39<Gorgor>last time i used linux was on woody or something like that, or a 2.6 kernel, but i never had any problem like this then
00:40<Gorgor>it's not very stable if there's 5,000 people having the exact same problem, in various configurations
00:40<Gorgor>just saying
00:41<Gorgor>is it part of prism national security to freeze your gnome display or x display once every 10,000 input activities?
00:44<chealer>comion: ran with root privileges?

01:00<Gorgor>https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=702809 that's the dead bug report, justification: breaks the whole system - but they blame it on gnome-console, command line i guess
01:01<Gorgor>i probably had one of those opened every time, so maybe that's it, i should try a different console program than gnome console

01:03<themill>Maybe try something other than gnome -- something that relies on working compositing might be more successful if it's a problem with the drivers for your video card
01:03<comion>where are problem logs in debian stored?
01:03<Gorgor>http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=100041&start=90 on this, the commonly recurrent thing that works for the posters is installing xfce desktop environment
01:03<Gorgor>i'm not sure if they all have intel processors in common, but they have differing video cards and their drivers

02:28<Gorgor>it doesn't look too ugly to me, it's just the fact that it freezes that sucks, cause it shouldn't
02:28<Gorgor>i haven't used linux since 2009 or so though, they had a different kind of look to it then, but it didn't freeze
02:30<Gorgor>CentOS and all these others seem to have similar problems, so it's distribution independent, and I think I read of somebody having it on KDE as well
02:30<slick>the point is, that i'm looking for any solution to revert from gnome 3 to 2...
02:30<Gorgor>http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=100041&start=105 from a comment on here
02:30<themill>slick: there are plenty of alternatives to gnome3; xfce seems to be a popular one
02:30<Gorgor>maybe there's backports, i'm not a helper though, that's something you might look into
02:31<slick>ok, I use also xfce on xubuntu
02:32<slick>but will I have default look like from debian 6.x ? white, bright theme?

09:42<mjt>so for cat it is logical to process stdin if no input is given, but for echo it isn't logical.

09:44<mjt>there are other cases where redirection looks logical and actually very demanding but is not supported. For example, reading zip archive from stdin - actual zip spec says the table-of-content is at the end of archive, so regular programs require the input to be seekable to be able to skip to the TOC section

10:28<mjt>re racy: when you updated /sbin/mdmon on a running system with mdmon running, that process is holding the old copy on the filesystem until exited or exec'ed again. When you exit, that old file gets deleted, causing filesystem write. But for write to be sucessful, mdmon should be running. We may hit a deadlock here, -- new mdmon can't be started until the write is finished.

12:10<quixotic>hi. I'm having some troubles with a script. What it does is essentially check if the remote external hard disk in my raspberry pi is mounted locally, if not, it asks whether it should and does it through sshfs. The script itself seems to work perfectly, however once mounted on my laptop, it disappears when the script ends.

16:41<sebastiancassidy>I'm not using straight debian - I'm trying to set up crunchbang linux which is debian based. I used dd to write the .iso to a usb drive. I have 5 hard drives set to a hardware raid0. I'm using the graphical installer, where I just click whatever options I need.
16:42<ompaul>sebastiancassidy: same answer as other network
