00:19<kini>I'm making a new bug report which I think may be relevant to another, existing bug. How should I communicate this to people watching the older bug? Should I X-Debbugs-CC my bug report mail to the address of the other bug? Or should I simply post a separate message to the other bug mentioning my new bug?

00:26<kini>I somehow missed this line: "Avoid sending such copies to the addresses of other bug reports, as they will be caught by the checks that prevent mail loops. There is relatively little point in using X-Debbugs-CC for this anyway, as the bug number added by that mechanism will just be replaced by a new one; use an ordinary CC header instead."

02:14<Brando753>I have a harddrive which is damaged and dd writes a lot but then fails at some point maybe 50GB in maybe 90 but I am trying to force DD to zero out that drive before I discard it, any suggestions?

02:43<bicyclette>Brando753, there is a noerror option, but as others said dd is not the best way to do that
02:44<Brando753>bicyclette: noerror is for reading only though no?
02:44<CQ>grrrr. anything I can do to stop an open relay from sending spam using one of my domains?

02:45<bicyclette>oh yes, you're right Brando753
02:45<Brando753>jm_: would either ddrescue gddrescue
02:45<bicyclette>maybe shred is a batter choice ?
02:45<bicyclette>*better
02:46<Brando753>be appropriate for destroying data
02:46<Brando753>bicyclette: I never used that as a replacement for dd only single files would that attempt to continue when it gets something like an IO error
02:46<jm_>Brando753: they are similar to dd so if you consider dd to be ok ...
02:46<Brando753>well they are specalized for recovery
02:47-!-mode/#debian [+l 656] by debhelper
02:47<Brando753>I usually dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sdx followed by dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdx any drive I let go of
02:47<Brando753>and that should remove any possibility of recovery of all sections it can write to
02:47<jm_>yeah nothin change in this regard
02:47<bicyclette>this is what shred does, but probably in a safe way
02:48<bicyclette>*safer, you never remove *all* possibilities
02:48<Brando753>how would it be safer, it does the exact same thing
02:49<Brando753>but I fear it will stop halfway through and I would waste another couple of hours to find that out
02:49<bicyclette>i just known that all this is much more complicated than it seems
02:49<bicyclette>there are a lot of warnings in shred's man page
02:50<Brando753>well shred is usually for files in a filesystem not an entire drive overwrite
02:50<bicyclette>if it's that important, i'd choose to physically destroy it
02:50<Brando753>so there are warnings for jorunaling file systems etc
02:50<bicyclette>yes, it does whole filesystems/disks too
02:50<centrx>Brando753, Have you tried the "noerrors" option for dd?
02:50<centrx>"noerror"
02:50<Brando753>there is also that "claim" you can recover data thats been random wiped a whole bunch but I have never seen anyone able to apply that
02:51<Brando753>centrx: I thought that was for read only though?
02:51<Brando753>if it would work I will be willing to try it
02:51<themill>!dban
02:51<dpkg>Darik's Boot and Nuke (DBAN) is a self-contained boot floppy/CD that securely wipes the hard disks of most computers (x86, x86-64, powerpc). DBAN will automatically and completely delete the contents of any hard disk that it can detect, which makes it an appropriate utility for bulk or emergency data destruction. http://www.dban.org/faq . See also <nwipe>.
02:51<Brando753>just trying to find the best option before I go
02:51<Brando753>yea I remember dban from a long while ago
02:51<themill>(I've seen dban handle drives on their last legs ok too)
02:51<Brando753>but will it continue
02:51<Brando753>ah I see
02:52<Brando753>is there any option to force dd at a certain point on the drive though? that would be nice to atleast know
02:52<Brando753>I will give dban a try though
02:52<Brando753>might as well
02:52<jm_>dd has skip/seek options for that
02:53<Brando753>ah that might be what I am looking for

04:31<jm_>why do you want to do that?
04:32<viscera>jm_, to consistently increase truetype font size (i don't want gnome text scaling as it doesn't work for all apps, eg. firefox)
04:32<viscera>intel driver keeps putting it back to 96dpi, but my display is *not* that
04:33<viscera>i know i can mess around with fontconfig but i'd rather see what happens when i bump DPI first
04:33<viscera>(fontconfig is non-trivial, at least for me)
04:33<jm_>is there nothing about it in display preferences?
04:34<viscera>no
04:35<viscera>my options are edit xorg.conf (which gets overridden), specify -dpi to X server (which i can't do because GDM hardcodes the X server invocation), and tweak fontconfig (i will if i *really* have to, but i rather not)
04:35<jm_>how are you setting it in xorg.conf?
04:35<viscera>i tried DisplaySize and i also tried Option DPI
04:36<viscera>perhaps i had my monitor identifier incorrect (how does one know that beforehand?)
04:36<viscera>i tried the one that is auto-specified, as found in Xorg.0.log

05:07<dstrasd>hello, help me with iceweasel pls
05:07<viscera>i really hope the quieter channels don't ban me for all this quit/joining
05:07<viscera>jm_, xdpyinfo reports 96x96 when i add "xrandr --dpi 120" to ~/.xsession
05:08<viscera>in any case, restarting iceweasel (not the enitre gnome-session) should suffice, no?
05:08<jm_>viscera: and you're sure your xsession is even used?
05:08<JayJax>dstrasd whats the problem?
05:08<viscera>jm_, it is... because if i don't exec gnome-session, gnome doesn't load

05:09<mekt>For those who have used both zsh and bash with the bash-completion package, how would you compare the experience and usefullness?
05:09<dstrasd>it takes forever before it starts loading 10-20 seconds before it even starts to load
05:09<jm_>viscera: well I'm out of ideas, I'd expect that even setting size in xorg.conf would work, but like I said, I can't test this myself with the intel driver
05:09<JayJax>viscera: have you tried Xft.dpi: 96
05:09<JayJax>dstrasd: okay thats odd
05:10<jm_>mekt: from what I know zsh is still far more configurable
05:10<jm_>I'll be back in about 20min
05:10<dstrasd>yeah, 'looking up' all the time. i tired chromium and starts loading almost instantaneously
05:11<viscera>JayJax, no, where do i set that? and how can i be sure that freetype is my only backend?
05:11<viscera>e.g. pango might do funky stuff
05:12<JayJax>viscera: First create a ~/.Xdefaults file (if you don't already have one), paste in: Xft.dpi: 96
05:12<viscera>jm_, thanks for your help anyway
