05:06<planetmaker>adri`, it would depend on what you want. But there's nothing which would put major blocking stones in your way
05:06<adri`>or mariadb is a better choice?
05:07-!-mode/#debian [+l 653] by debhelper
05:07<planetmaker>IMHO you should consider either mariaDB or postgresql, though. MySQL is kinda being shut off from public support by oracle

05:07<planetmaker>thus generally you should consider alternatives to mysql. But not for debian reasons

06:30<bernat>!exim4
06:30<dpkg>Exim 4 is the default <MTA> since Debian 3.1 "Sarge". The Debian package has a debconf-driven configuration which greatly eases configuration for most run-of-the-mill applications. E-Mail is a complicated matter, so it might be necessary to read a lot of documentation to allow more advanced features. exim4 is very powerful and flexible. Find more about Debian's exim4 on http://pkg-exim4.alioth.debian.org/

09:23<dpkg>DFSG is the Debian Free Software Guidelines, which are explained at http://www.debian.org/social_contract#guidelines . For a full list of DFSG-compatible/incompatible software licenses, see http://wiki.debian.org/DFSGLicenses

09:26<craynerd>that makes sense
09:26<sney>'binary blob' is the term for closed-source, precompiled parts of a driver or program. in the case of wifi drivers, it's usually a tiny little .bin file that's executed on the wifi chip itself, without which the chip can't work. otherwise known as firmware

09:34<craynerd>sney - this is where I was going. What do you mean by "available in non-free" Basically, my usb wifi doesn`t seem to be supported or working and someone earlier advised me to download a non-free iso. I`m just trying to figure out what that means and in that case, what I have actually installed!
09:34<sney>Debian would really prefer that hardware manufacturers not do this, but at the same time, Debian wants to be the universal OS, so having a holding area where non-dfsg-free stuff can be distributed is useful
09:35<craynerd>so is debian non-free and different install or something I can now install on top of what I have currently installed
09:36<sney>'non-free' is a section of the debian repositories where these naughty driver packages are kept. the 'non-free iso' is an installer that includes several of them. the system it installs is basically the same, just with the inclusion of a couple non-free packages
09:36<craynerd>ahh!

14:45<heday>Hi all, I have debian stable, with kernel 3.2.0 with a touchpad (synaptics) that is recognized as a PS/2 mouse. It seems to be due to a kernel bug that was already fixed in newer versions, but I would rather stay with the stable debian. Is there any way I can fix this without having to go to 'testing' or 'unstable'?

20:50<freddofrog>folks... I've just attached a hp tape library to my wheezy box and I've been perusing a document from hp that recommends that ST_BUFFER_BLOCKS and ST_FAST_MTEOM in st_options.h have some changes made. So my question is: is it possible to find out what these are set to without having to recompile my kernel?

20:51<centrx>freddofrog, It sounds like they might be somewhere in /proc
20:52<freddofrog>centrx: thanks..... but can you be a little more specific?
20:52<freddofrog>where about's in /proc aught I be looking?
20:53<freddofrog>s/'//
20:53<centrx>I don't know, I am not familiar with these options
20:54<centrx>But /proc is the place where file handlers are stored that you can do things like echo 1 > /proc/cpu/superduper
20:54<centrx>Otherwise, those may simply be compile-time options where you have to recompile the kernel
