02:10<eats>So while making a Debian live USB I think I broke my GRUBS. I understand this is a case specific issue, but is there any advice you can give me?
02:10<weasel>"unbreak it"?
02:11*babilen laughs
02:12<eats>I used the term broke and I apologize. What I mean is something malfunctioned. Are there any tools I can use to reconfigure GRUBS or something?
02:12<eats>It's not broken, because I can still boot up.
02:13<eats>Something is awry, is all I know. Any bones thrown would leave me eternally grateful.
02:13<weasel>what is wrong then?
02:13<eats>I'll grap the exact error message.
02:13<eats>*grab
02:13<weasel>so far I gathered "It's broken but it works"

02:14<weasel>you could always just try to grub-install it over your system disk again

02:20<babilen>eats: The chroot instructions can be used from any live CD or from the Debian installer to get into an existing installation

02:21<eats>And, I guess the installation on my USB wasn't completed because I can't boot in to that either.
02:22<babilen>eats: Sounds as if you replaced the "system" grub install (for your on disk debian installation) with one for your USB -- boot the installer or a different live CD from CD/USB, chroot into the system and fix it
02:23-!-hiva [~hiva@80.191.2.50] has quit [Quit: leaving]

04:21<babilen>perry: Once you've done this we are coming to the question as to *why* you added /etc/apt/sources.list.d/cassou-emacs-wheezy.list and what you expected to achieve by doing so?

08:52<babilen>FakeBoost: There are plenty of tools that come to mind, each would be used in different circumstances. You are, however, most likely looking for the following procedure:
08:52<babilen>dpkg: fixmbr
08:52<dpkg>To reinstall <GRUB> boot to your Debian install disk/live CD, switch to the other console (Alt-F2), then mount your root filesystem (mount -t ext2 /dev/whatever /target ; mount --bind /dev /target/dev ; mount -t proc none /target/proc ; mount -t sysfs none /target/sys), then chroot into it (chroot /target) and run "update-grub && grub-install /dev/whatever". See also <rescue mode>, <dual boot guide>, <supergrub>. Also works for EFI!
08:53-!-[UP]Crystal [~crystal@195.222.83.58] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
08:53<babilen>FakeBoost: If you have access to the system already you can just run "update-grub2" and then install it into the MBR of your first harddisk (sda) with "grub-install /dev/sda"
08:53<FakeBoost>All righty, but for now i'm in debian, trying to fix a lubuntu installation on a pen drive...
08:54<babilen>So, chroot in there and install it to the USB stick? But you might want to ask about Ubuntu specifics in #ubuntu (or #lubuntu if you are so inclined)

08:55<FakeBoost>Thank you.
08:57<babilen>FakeBoost: You might have to set --boot-directory to the boot directory inside your mounted stick if you do it from "the outside", but I guess that chrooting gets around that. All the best (not too familiar with preparing USB sticks so I might miss some particulars)

15:46<valdyn>hyu: dotfiles are created by you or by starting a program
15:46<valdyn>hyu: that depends on the program, and i dont know weechat specifically
15:46<sney>if you just want the stock, post-install one you can create a new user account and run weechat as that user. that should give you something to work with.
15:47<sney>weechat may also have a 'first run' kind of option where you can tell it to generate that stuff, it might be in the man page or on their website

18:53<dskfl>sney, well the directory debian/patches inside the openjdk-7 source contains a bunch of .patch and .diff files but no 'series' like you mention. Also i found that the patches found in openjd-7/patches (and where i tried to put mine) are all mentioned in Makefile.am and Makefile.in
18:54<dskfl>sney, Could i just add mine to those Makefiles and be done with it or it won't work?

23:52<db3>What is a good kde metapackage? Can I install it using the synatpic manager? I am a linux beginner
23:52<themill>kde-standard is probably what you want; yes, just install it via synaptic (or apt-get or aptitude)

23:54<db3>The same thing, it asks me to insert the Debian GNU/Linux Wheezy Official i386 disk and I am not sure if I have that
23:55<db3>Should'nt it just download what it needs?
23:55<themill>it's remembering that you had the install disk earlier -- you can save yourself download time by popping it in, or just remove that entry from your /etc/apt/sources.list
