00:26<Guest2361>I ask because in these chat rooms there can be 600+ people, yet no chat. Maybe they are bots and then the user just skims through the chat once a day?
00:27<dratlar_>close
00:27<Guest2361>What is the big secret on this? People seem reluctant to answer
00:28<dratlar_>I would guess few are bots, many are detached screens/tmuxes och BNCs
00:28<dratlar_>there is no secret
00:28<Guest2361>So if I navigate to another chat room, my handle continues to show up here, that would be a detached screen?
00:29<dratlar_>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_Screen
00:30<Guest2361>I see
00:30<dratlar_>and you run your irc client inside a screen (or tmux, another terminal multiplexer)
00:30<dratlar_>irssi is a popular irc client

00:39<Guest2361>Will do. I was trying different debian packages. For each one I would put in a username and pswrd. But some of the login screens did not by default show my username which I did not write down, so I could not log in. So I started using a single letter login for all of them, but here it shows me as guest

01:03<Crowbar>I also have an old pc on which Debian seems to run great. I think this PC would be called a "headless" PC because it usually has not mouse, keyboard or monitor. I have to manually disconnect my computer and h ook up that one to use it. I have heard the phrase "SSH into the server" to mean you can control the server via another computer. The problem is that is at the terminal or konsole.

01:08<Brando753>Crowbar: https://wiki.debian.org/DesktopEnvironment
01:08<Crowbar>Ok so I should install a graphical environment on the old computer and then I guess access that
01:08<Crowbar>I will check out the link thx
01:08<Brando753>no
01:08<Brando753>you probably should not
01:08<Brando753>it sounds like you have one
01:09<jm_>Crowbar: you could use VNC if you really insist on using GUI
01:09<Brando753>what are you planning on using the computer for?
01:09<Crowbar>I see what you mean. I believe the operating system is Debian KDE, so KDE would be the graphical environment
01:09<Brando753>Crowbar: and what do you intend to do with this system?
01:10<Crowbar>I dont know yet. Practice with it. See if I can someday get an email server installed. Maybe a file server, some kind of use
01:10<Brando753>then you should not have any graphics environment installed and only access it via ssh
01:10<Brando753>if you plan to use it as a server
01:11<Crowbar>VNC, I forgot about that. that might work, is that what Linux people would use?
01:11-!-pwr [~pwr@86.121.2.28] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
01:11<Brando753>no
01:11<Brando753>a linux person would use ssh
01:11<Crowbar>They would use the terminal I guess?
01:11<Brando753>and remove the graphics on a server
01:11<Brando753>yes
01:12<Crowbar>It is really hard to get a GUI user to switch back to a terminal. I don't see why the terminal would be easier to use, it seems like you have to remember alot of commands
01:12-!-fiasko [~thomas@dslb-188-103-145-019.pools.arcor-ip.net] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
01:12<Crowbar>in order to use it
01:12<Brando753>I dont see how you plan for the gui to help you setup a server
01:13<Crowbar>So servers do not typically have a GUI?
01:13<Brando753>not any run by competent individuals
01:13<Crowbar>Ok, I didnt know that
01:13-!-pwr [~pwr@86.121.2.28] has joined #debian
01:13<Brando753>Using a DE on a server adds security risks and wastes resources
01:14<themill>Crowbar: they tend to be on machines in a different room or even on the other side of the world and it's much faster to do things with a couple of commands than it is to use any sort of remote desktop
01:14<Crowbar>I see
01:15-!-Blue__Hat [~TwinKam20@184.170.8.136] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
01:15<Crowbar>I have a book called Linux Servers on the way. How about multiple servers on one machine, is that sometimes done?
01:16<Brando753>virtual servers? yea sure openVZ and Xen are pretty common.
01:16<Brando753>Crowbar: sorry if I seemed a little rough, just doing a lot of work, didnt mean to sound rude or anything ;D
01:17-!-mythos [~mythos@chello212017123182.4.klafu.surfer.at] has joined #debian
01:17<Crowbar>Thats no problem its cool. Virtual servers sound pretty interesting. I don't want to buy alot of hardware right now and thought this PC would make a good practice machine
01:18<Brando753>yea working on a practice machine is a great way to start
01:18<Brando753>but if you plan to use a web/email server keep in mind most ISP's block those ports
01:18<Crowbar>Why?
01:18<Brando753>so it wont work they way you want if you have one of those ISP
01:19<Brando753>Crowbar: so they can charge you a ton for "business" class service of course
01:19-!-UCC [~unknown@188.27.169.79] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:19<Crowbar>Arent they helpful
01:19<Brando753>also back in the day a lot of viruses spread through emails so blocking those ports on residential areas helped stop that

01:20<Brando753>so if you want to make a web/email server you could look into renting a VPS from anywhere from $3~15 a month

01:21-!-Malsasa [~Malsasa@114.79.62.200] has joined #debian
01:21<Crowbar>I want to look into keeping what I can on my own computers if possible. The email server is not a priority and that can wait. A file server might be easier to accomplish
01:21<Brando753>understandable
01:22<Brando753>Crowbar: keep in mind with a email server that uptime is critical, if you run your own and then there is a power outage, a network issue, anything that disconnects it from the internet and someone sends emails to you during that time you will never get them
01:23<Crowbar>I was going to worry about that later. I figured if that got the how to figured out, then something like a low power air cooled mini server might be able to maintain a longer uptime than most pc's
01:24<jm_>I don't know about you, but any MTA I used can handle retries just fine
01:25-!-johnpaulneedham [~johnpauln@2.120.94.69] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:25<Brando753>well uptime will mostly consist of power supplies, do you have backups? internet connections, how reliable are they? maintenance etc

12:10<teb>but pvreduce seems to be used to remove the physicalvolume from the volumegroup, I only have one physicalvolume used for the volumegroup which is my extended partition /dev/sda5
