00:02<us`0gb>WTFPL both does not put it in the public domain and does not grant any patent licenses.

00:02<abrotman>perhaps email debian-legal
00:03<us`0gb>That's probably a good idea. Do I need to subscribe in order to get the response?
00:04<themill>us`0gb: "put in public domain" is sufficiently vague and problematic that you're better with something like WTFPL (or BSD or ....)
00:05<us`0gb>themill: What makes public domain with a fallback license (such as is done in CC0) more problematic than WTFPL?
00:06<themill>you end up in useless arguments about whether public domain exists or not and whether you can put things in the public domain or not. A clear licence that just works is better than that
00:07<Hydroxide>us`0gb: you can always combine CC) with a patent grant
00:07<Hydroxide>*combine CC0 with
00:07<us`0gb>There have also been arguments about whether WTFPL is a valid license.
00:08<us`0gb>Hmm. A combination might be a good idea ....
00:08<themill>so pick any of the other variants that say the same thing
00:08<Hydroxide>us`0gb: plausible patent grants are in the Apache License 2.0 and the GPLv3, depending on your preferences
00:08<us`0gb>The variants say that the license itself must remain intact.
00:09<us`0gb>Same with the Apache license. Though the Apache license does grant the patent rights.
00:09<Hydroxide>us`0gb: I'm saying you can grab the patent grant from the Apache license and otherwise use CC0
00:09<themill>Do you really want to allow people to change the licence on you?
00:10<us`0gb>themill: Yes. I don't think copyright law should even be a valid thing. To not put something in the public domain is to validate copyright law.
00:10<us`0gb>Validating copyright law is useful for some things, but not for others.
00:11-!-shurpu [~shurpu@175.158.165.130] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:11<us`0gb>For example, I might use the GPL for compiled code.
00:11<themill>public domain only exists in the context of copyright law so you're disappearing up your own fundamental pretty quickly here
00:11<us`0gb>But I'm using this for interpreted code and web pages.
00:11<Hydroxide>themill: he's recognizing the reality of the law and nullifying it as best he can for this code
00:12<us`0gb>Public domain is just a term for works that are not covered by copyright. Without copyright law, there would be no public domain, but everything would be in an equivalent state as public domain.
00:12<Hydroxide>naturally, it allows anyone else to apply whatever copyright restrictions they want to their copy
00:13<Hydroxide>rather than enforcing the lack of copyright on all derivatives. (that's effectively the GPLv3 aka copyleft)
00:14<themill>Hydroxide: allowing anyone to vary that licence later is not doing that
00:14<Hydroxide>people have different attitudes. he doesn't want to impose restrictions, even if that means others can. it's the same kind of mentality difference between BSD and GPL, except without requiring attribution
00:14<Hydroxide>and without barring endorsement claims
00:15<Hydroxide>one preserves freedom of users, the other preserves freedom of downstream developers. both are real.
00:15<Marillion>if the code violate any copyrights other companies, the licence is expired
00:16<Hydroxide>expired is the wrong word - but yeah, it doesn't waive copyrights the licensor can't waive

07:43<babilen>shurpu: Not using Xorg is, well, torturing yourself, but either way: Read the wpasupplicant documentation and play with it. fwiw, my recommendation would be a sensible window manager (e.g. awesome, fluxbox, openbox, ...) + network-manager if you are looking for a minimal/small setup. Also use a modern display manager (gdm3, lightdm) to start it.
07:43<babilen>shurpu: wicd *should* work though, but, as I said earlier, I have given up on it.
07:44<abrotman>shurpu: wicd in wheezy must be told which wireless adapters it's allowed to control

10:45<sney>yeah, building stuff and dumping it in /lib/modules willy nilly is going to cause problems for you when you upgrade a kernel. this is also why we tell people not to use the nvidia installer
10:45<nath_>never had good luck with this one myself :-////

19:27<bigpat>what should I do if I cannot use auto remove.
19:28<bigpat>I notice that auto remove is basically asking me to remove every core file in my system. is that some kind of bug
19:29<Hatter>writing that statement above made me realise (duh me) ssh -l user is on the remote box and su user is on the local box. so whether a key or a password i guess is related to the .ssh/authorised_keys for each user.
