00:22<somiaj>Infiltrator: do you have to add the user to some group (maybe even sudo) so the user has the correct permissions to install/remove software. My guess is it would be a configuration issue
00:22<somiaj>I personally suggest learning aptitude (just run aptitude in a console, gives a curses interface you can look though software with)
00:26<rryoumaa>why is aptitude so slow? does it do a whole bunch of disk access?

12:56<Sandie>i should disable logs on my laptop as i dont use them and want less writes to my ssd
12:58-!-MarcoZink4 [~marcozink@201.124.126.200] has joined #debian
12:58<somiaj>Sandie: logs are decent to have, I personally would not suggest it and most modern ssd's shouldn't have their life drastically changed by writting log files.
12:58<ncl>Sandie: logs are pretty small, you can just configure them to be appended to for longer, then be rotated once before deletion, there's also a package I believe that can configure logs to be kept in a tmpfs for some time and then written to the disk periodically
12:58-!-knives47z [~smuxi@124.6.181.174] has joined #debian
12:59<ncl>(but that's a bit counterintuitive since if you ever crash, the last logs are the ones you want, but wont be written)
12:59<ncl>er, counterproductive
12:59<ncl>Also, syslog has its own mechanisms that safely delay log writes
12:59<somiaj>yea configure logrotate to delete log files after some time and not rotate them at all, this may make it so you don't have lots of extra writes for an archive of the logs.
12:59<Sandie>if my system crashes i re install and reconfigure

15:46<che_>anyone have protips on changing the root filesystem type? I'm thinking of copying the root to the new partition/FS, updating the fstab with the new UUID and fs type, then reinstalling grub from chroot?
15:47<che_>or is that a fruitless task?
15:47<ompaul>che_: I think the phrase is good luck with that
15:47<fubuntu>why would you want to?
15:47<che_>hehehe
15:47<centrx>fubuntu, Who is the prime suspect?
15:47<ompaul>che_: you have space, do a clean install, copy data and game on

15:47<fubuntu>it does the first time, and after that, wakes in seconds
15:47<fubuntu>i believe because of usb
15:47<centrx>che_, There is probably a simple option for upgrading ext3 to ext4. I think ext4 might be backwards compatible with ext3

20:19<us`0gb>I get the error "gksu: command not found".
20:19<mju>What do you type?
20:20<us`0gb>I find the format of the command, I used "gksu --help".
20:20<us`0gb>*To find

20:24<us`0gb>I just figured out what one of the problems is. I'm still logged into the shell where I ran "sudo su us1gb", so I'm not running as my main account.
20:24<mju>us`0gb: Maybe it is not installed. It is in the package gksu.

20:24<Dcrmg_>us`0gb, try sux
20:25<Harzilein>is there any material on when it's proper to make a -src package?
20:25<us`0gb>mju: It's installed, but it's only in root's path, not my path and not us1gb's path.
20:25<Dcrmg_>you might need to install it first
20:25<Harzilein>is it strictly for stuff that itself will go into debian or could one package another os' source?

20:26<mju>us`0gb: On my system it is in /usr/bin
20:26<Harzilein>i'm wondering because i think elks-libc by itself is not all that useful, it'd need a real elks-headers package or something, and it'd be natural to also offer elks in /usr/src ;)
20:26<us`0gb>Now it's gone .... I could have sworn root was finding it a bit ago .... Probably my mistake.
20:27<themill>!hash -r
20:27<dpkg>After changing your PATH or installing new packages, you may need to tell your shell to forget old program locations (or to forget that the command was not found). In bash, "hash -r" will do this ("help hash" for more details). In zsh, "rehash". See also <PATH>.
20:27<supaman>us`0gb: check if gksu is installed by issuing dpkg -s gksu
20:28<us`0gb>Yeah, you're right. It's not installed. Thanks!

22:48<squisher>pgnome, my gut feeling is the ssd will still give you a pretty good performance boost on sata2, even if you won't get the full speed it offers
22:48<us`0gb>Meh, GNU has all sorts of nonfree stuff on purpose. They aren't as free as they claim to be (mostly it's the manuals that have this issue).

22:53*SamB did some gcc-doc packaging and was like "man, I wish they'd just use a free license so we could just use GNU/doko's existing infrastructure to build these ..."
22:55<squisher>pgnome, follow the suggestion above to look up the maximum transfer rates. I don't think sata3 offers much more than that

22:59<us`0gb>There are all sorts of other issues with their choice in licensing as well. For example, what if you wanted to combing the documentation into the executable? Even if it was free, being a separate copyleft license, you couldn't do it.
23:01<us`0gb>I dumped my old distribution once I learned about GNU's documentation license. I much prefer having that proprietary documentation removed.
