00:00<somiaj>i.e. I know the events happen but never installed any software which attaches standard scripts to those hooks, I would imange gnome/kde do something like that

00:00<rpm>Have you look in your bios for "boot on ac plug-in" or something?
00:01<rpm>mine only does it on ac
00:01<somiaj>no, I do know my laptop resumes if I'm pluged in and I open the lid (cause that is hardware)

00:01<somiaj>but I don't have any thing attached to the events to put it to sleep, I like being able to close my lid and my laptop stay runing

00:02<rpm>I also have a problem with wifi when I resume, where it doesn't connect, and the tab in the taskbar says "authentication required"
00:02<rjsalts>how does the filename for a symlink in /etc/ssl/certs get calculated? e.g. f4996e82.0
00:02<somiaj>rpm: I orignally thought it was a power issue, but I have the same problem if I'm pluged in or not. as I said I never tracked down what causes the issue.
00:03-!-zerun0 [~zerun0@79-101-170-193.dynamic.isp.telekom.rs] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
00:03<rpm>somiaj, alright, I'll keep searching
00:03<somiaj>rpm: my wifi card and some others don't like to be suspend. I personally disconnect my ethernet before suspending my machine
00:03-!-zerun0 [~zerun0@79-101-170-193.dynamic.isp.telekom.rs] has joined #debian
00:03<somiaj>rpm: I will ocasionally have to remove and reload the wifi modules when they get hung up due to a suspend.
00:05<rpm>somiaj: same here. Maybe I could do that automatically. Then again, when I do this the dialogue still pops up, even though my wifi username and pass are already filled into it.

09:13<SynrG>cc_: with a reasonable upstream source package, it will state its dependencies, so you don't need to learn how to "install all the file types"

11:18<zsero>for example when removing a package
11:19<somiaj>zsero: stuff in /usr/share should really only be put and removed by debian packages
11:19<somiaj>zsero: in that case anyone should be able to readt he files and dpkg will keep track of which package put what file there and remove things when the package is removed
11:20<Sandie>zsero: aslong as root has r/w to it it should be okay. but listen to somiaj
11:20<somiaj>zsero: users should put icons in their $HOME dir if they want custom ones. If you only have one user this is fine. If you want to put custom icons on your machine all users can see, use /usr/local/share/....

16:18<gurka>so it would maybe be a good idea to place all 'compiled-from-source' software in another, specific, directory?
16:19<Nikon>i found this bug report, it says it was added upstream but so far i can't actually find the patched package

22:00<Liquid>I have just downloaded a new copy of debian wheezy and I know how to get the md5sum and sha1sums from the iso. Just having trouble verifying the signatures?
22:01<Liquid>Used "gpg --verify <file name>.sig <debian>.iso
22:02<sabrehagen>hi guys, i'm wanting to run my entire OS from ram. i want to load *everything* on my HDD into memory at boot, so no subsequent file access causes a HDD seek. i have found this article, but am not sure it will do what i want to do, which is have a persistent image, unlike a live cd, where my changes can/are saved back to disk on shutdown http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linuxquestions-org-member-success-stories-23/how-to-boot-os-into-ram

22:03<Poffum>....so you want an OS that is unable to write to the harddrive until you shut it down
22:03<sabrehagen>Poffum: essentially yes, it would be nice if it did periodic flushes though
22:03<Poffum>Pretty sure those two are mutually exclusive.
22:03<Infiltrator>sabrehagen: What are the sizes of your HD and RAM? I doubt that it would fit.
22:03<Liquid>What am I doing wrong with the verification?
22:04<Poffum>Well, from the perspective of worrying about being fingerprinted by a virus or somesuch
22:04<Infiltrator>sabrehagen: Also, Linux already does memory caching of disk.
22:04<sabrehagen>Infiltrator: ram is 32gb, and disk is <8gb
22:05<Infiltrator>So... you have RAM from today... and a disk from twenty years ago? :P
22:05<sabrehagen>Infiltrator: haha, it's coming off a usb stick
22:05<sabrehagen>you had 8gb hard drives 20 years ago?!
22:06<sabrehagen>man, you must have been rich!
22:06<Infiltrator>25; whatever it was.

22:08<Liquid>Is the md5 and sha1 all I need to get and do I not need to worry with the signatures?
22:08<sabrehagen>any further info on the problem at hand? rw on the usb is very slow, hence the move to ram.
22:08<Infiltrator>At any rate, have you tried a search? I turned these instructions up pretty quickly: http://reboot.pro/topic/14547-linux-load-your-root-partition-to-ram-and-boot-it/
22:08<Infiltrator>sabrehagen: You can have a look through the search results for more: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=linux+boot+to+ram

22:09<sabrehagen>Infiltrator: that approach doesn't sync back to disk
22:10<Infiltrator>You probably should just let Linux cache as per normal. If your rw is really that slow, your boot up will take forever.
22:11<sabrehagen>i don't mind a slower boot, as it's not that slow so far
22:12<sabrehagen>I just want to click on an application, and have it load immediately, and not have the whole os become unresponsive for 5 seconds as it tries to write to the usb
22:13<nevyn>sabrehagen: you are mounting noatime right?
22:13<sabrehagen>nevyn: i haven't done anything practical at the moment, i'm purely researching at the moment
