05:44<ompaul>jm_: as I've just joined I'll suggest you are trying to use software that has no more security support - for that reason alone I hope you are not connected to the internet for anything other than packages with that box
05:45<jm_>ompaul: I have clarified things for omg123, so I hope they read this too (I have explicitely asked what kind of support they want as that was the initial question) ...
05:45<omg123>it's basicly a data logger (non-snesitive data) security is of second importance

05:46<danielsh`>I'd like to resolve DNS names as follows: anything ending in .myorg.priv gets resolved by and everything else gets resolved by How may I achieve this?
05:48<ompaul>danielsh`: 192..2 needs to run bind for all .priv and it also must know about 10. upstream
05:48<Guest3806>I think you can do that by sending your dns resolution through a local dnsmasq instance. You *can't* do it with just resolv.conf
05:48<danielsh`>ompaul, 10. isn't an upstream of 192. . One is the work VPN and one is my personal VPN.
05:48<Guest3806>ugh, why am I guested?
05:49*danielsh` looks up dnsmasq

08:31<jm_>wouldn't it be easier to simply use chroot for that?

23:18<t12345>worst it would do is swap mouse buttons until you change it back. i dont have any expierience using xmodmap, but i'd assume to change it back it would just be the reverse of that command (ie, xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 2 3")

23:46<dualbus>If you understand it, you know that software under testing is expected to change, is not *stable*
23:46<sugarpuff>dualbus: precisely
23:46<themill>sugarpuff: no, the priority is fixing stable.
23:46<dualbus>sugarpuff: not really, because the critical deploys are the stable ones
23:46<us`0gb>sugarpuff: Servers shouldn't use Testing. End users who want security also shouldn't use Testing.
23:46<sugarpuff>there's no good reason not to fix this in all the releases
23:47<themill>End users who use testing should be prepared to grab the occasional package from sid.
23:47<sugarpuff>and your "should" is worth nothing
23:47<themill>sugarpuff: it's not like that' snot happening.
23:47<sugarpuff>because in the real world people use all kinds of systems
23:47<dualbus>sugarpuff: meh, troll.
23:47<SamB>sugarpuff: anyway, themill is speaking about the (pessimistic) support plan; in this particular case, it doesn't look like it's come to that
23:47<themill>and they're unsupported uses are unsupported.
23:47<SamB>so you're in luck, *this* time
23:47<us`0gb>Testing is not an current release. There's no particular reason why it would not have issues such as lack of security.
23:48<sugarpuff>it's precisely because it's called "testing" and "unstable" that changes and fixes go there first
23:48<sugarpuff>until they're proven stable

23:49<dualbus>sugarpuff: it didn't confuse me. I run stable. I just 'sudo apt-get upgrade', and enjoyed the benefits
23:49<us`0gb>Actually, updates are moved from Unstable to Testing when they have seen stability for ten days or something. Testing doesn't see updates first.
23:49<dualbus>no thinking involved :)
23:50<sugarpuff>us`0gb: yeah, and unstable doesn't see this update either apparently
23:50<themill>sugarpuff: incorrect as I said
23:50<SamB>us`0gb: and their dependencies are all in place, yeah
23:50<sugarpuff>so the way security fixes go for debian, it's stable (security) -> stable -> unstable -> testing?

23:55<SamB>sugarpuff: yup
23:55<sugarpuff>and it still sounds like this is right too: "so the way security fixes go for debian, it's stable (security) -> stable -> unstable -> testing?"
23:55<sugarpuff>at least for this bug
23:56<SamB>not really; the fix in stable looks to have been backported
23:56<somiaj>sugarpuff: I would see that as two seperate chains, as they are two different versions of pcakges being fixed.
23:56<centrx>sugarpuff, It is two different paths for the package. If that is a chronology, then in this case unstable is already patched too
23:57<sugarpuff>is it easier to downgrade to stable, or upgrade to unstable?
23:57<somiaj>sugarpuff: stable and oldstable get security fixes (if it effects them), sepertally the version in sid recives the fix and starts the normal path into testing.
23:57<sugarpuff>err, rather, easier/better?
23:57<ncl>I think trying to downgrade is on the list of things to "never ever do"
23:58<somiaj>sugarpuff: you could also install the fixed packages form unstable in testing if you want to just fix this one package in testing.
23:58<sugarpuff>ncl: that's what i figured…
23:58<centrx>sugarpuff, Downgrades are not supported, and upgrades are easy, so...
23:58<sugarpuff>somiaj: thanks, that sounds like the best option. how to do?
23:59<somiaj>sugarpuff: multiple ways, one is just add a sid repo to your list and pin it lower than 500 (the default) so it doesn't get used
23:59<SamB>sometimes it's reasonable to try downgrading *one* package, but don't ever try it with the whole distribution
