16:46<somiaj>you shouldn't need to 'dist-upgrade' a wheezy system, just run upgrade that will keep you from pulling in new packages

16:47<DNS>huh
16:47<somiaj>within a stable release you shouldn't need to dist-upgrade (just upgrade)
16:47<somiaj>the difference is dist-upgrade will pull in new packages and remove old packages to solve dependency issues (this might be the core of your problem)
16:47<DNS>i use dist-upgrade for a few years now already

16:53<DNS>when openvz has sysvinit installed then there are some issues
16:53<somiaj>DNS: now upstart replaces sysvinit, but maybe you have some strange thing in your sources.list or in your installed package making apt think that the best course of action is to install sysvinit
16:53<DNS>not in my case
16:53<somiaj>DNS: so this should not happen and is either a bug or a problem with your sources.list having unoffical sources confusing apt.

16:54<DNS>no
16:54<DNS>everything in my sources.list is original debian sources

19:44<schleppy>If there is a more specific channel I should send this question to, please let me know. I am building a .deb from a binary compiled from golang code. The binary, once installed form the debian is a different size form the one I compiled before building the deb. I can't figure out how this would even be possible. What am I missing?

19:46<dondelelcaro>schleppy: I'm not sure precisely how golang includes debugging information into ELFs, but it's possible that the debugging information has been stripped out
19:46<dondelelcaro>schleppy: so that may be one size difference. The compiler options may also be totally different
19:47<schleppy>is there a cmdline flag to opt out of that? In case I want to test that theory?

23:00<flymol0>hey guys
23:00<flymol0>quick question regarding debian backups
23:01<flymol0>I have a server running debian and would like to do incremental backups using rsync - does anyone have an automated solution for doing this?

23:05<ncl>well, rsync with a couple options should easily do a full backup, and you could just combine that with cron, right?
