08:29<Brigo>Duddle, make dist-upgrade with -d (download only) and use the downloaded .deb for feed apt-listchanges
08:30<jm_>hmm I am not sure on the format, and after re-reading this I assumed that one runs it like you did, but when reading more about it it's apparently automatically run by apt
08:30<petn-randall>Duddle: You can just install and configure apt-listchanges, it'll display you all changelogs and/or NEWS since the last update, and ask you if you want to proceed. You can then simply say 'no'.

16:16<SynrG>so there are instructions in /usr/share/doc/wpasupplicant/
16:16<SynrG>read the section on 'roaming' if you want that ...
16:16<SynrG>it involves setting up a 'manual' stanza that gives wpasupplicant control ...
16:16<SynrG>and also a 'default' stanza
16:17<SynrG>then you define your network stanzas in /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf, setting your wpa_psk and essid in each

16:17<SynrG>that's the overview :) the README files have details
16:19<SynrG>oh, and setting it up so the ctrl interface is in the netdev group and you are added to the netdev group makes control via wpa_cli as your username possible.
16:19*mtn always loves it when someone comes here and says they don't have internet at all :P
16:20<antifas>at that laptop ;)
16:20<somiaj>antifas: http://paste.debian.net/94123/ -- if you use the interfaces file (provided you have wpasupplicant and your wifi card firmware and everything working) those lines can get you up, and you can use foo as any alias you want, nice to not be an interface name
16:20<somiaj>antifas: so with those lines, 'ifup wlan0=foo' will bring up the interface with those settings
16:21<somiaj>assuming simple dhcp wireless network. Also check 'dmesg | grep firmware' or '/sbin/ifconfig -a' to see if you need any firmware or if your wirless device is detected correctly

16:31<somiaj>rostam: what type of partition/data are you wanting to share between the two installs?
16:32<somiaj>rostam: what two debian installs are you trying to install and why?
16:32<rostam>somiaj, I am planning to install two instances of same version, and have an extra ext4 partition that can be shared between them.
16:33<somiaj>rostam: any reason why? Could you achive what you wanted with chroot
16:34<somiaj>rostam: but then yes that is what you do, you need at least four partitions one for swap (That can be used by both), one for each instance and one to share. Now if you needed an instance to split up with /boot /home or the likes, just account for that.
16:34<somiaj>but if they are exactly the same a /home partition is useful to share as all the user data/config files go there. But if you start having different versions of things you may not want them sharing the same config files

16:36<rostam>somiaj, we do not use /home. This is for an embedded system. I was thinking to have primiary partion, sda1 (bootable, debian), sda2 (bootable debian), sda3(ext4 shared partition), sda4 (swap). I will loose support for LVM but I am okay with it unless you think it is bad.

23:43<somiaj>Doophus: you didn't install things in a normal path and also didn't install things from debian packages. Since you used /usr/local this is fine, but realize we don't really support non debian packaged software
23:43<Doophus>Ohh.
23:43<somiaj>Doophus: you just need to put /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-2.1.1/bin/ in your $PATH, and since sudo uses a secure path that isn't the easiest to do
23:43<Doophus>So... if I add it to the visudo it might work...?
23:43<somiaj>also I thought ruby and rails was in debian, so why not use the debian packages
23:44<wardhan>i have added tsched=0, deleted pulse folder from .config & rebooted the system, now the sound is completly gone, alsamixer does not show analog device. is it advisable to remove alsa from system ?
23:44<somiaj>yes you can alter the secure_path (I belive that is what it is called, man sudoers to make sure), but sudo uses a very paticular path

23:44<somiaj>wardhan: no alsa is the core sound part, pulse is ran on top of alsa

23:45<somiaj>Doophus: you could also put links of the bins into /usr/local/bin and see if they run just fine from there (many things will)
23:45<somiaj>Doophus: and this way you don't have to modify your path. But any reason you didn't install the debian packages?
23:45<Doophus>You're correct somiaj, the ruby is in the debian apt-get but it was of an old version and I was worried I might get into issues (that I can't figure out on my own) with the tutorial so I wanted to keep everything as same as I can.
23:46<somiaj>Doophus: that is fine, as long as you only install things in /usr/local it will not mess with your debian system. But as you see it may not put things in your $PATH either

23:47-!-[UP]Crystal [~crystal@46.53.177.14] has joined #debian
23:47<Doophus>Thanks somiaj!
23:48<somiaj>Doophus: again nothign wrong with using /usr/local to install non debian stuff, you just need to manage it yourself and make sure it only puts things in /usr/local to not conflict with debian packages
23:48<Doophus>somiaj: just out of interest, after setting up links like that, if I wanted to remove it in the future (suppose I just delete the ruby-2.1.1 directory for whatever reason), will those links disappear?
23:48<somiaj>Doophus: also dpkg will not know this is installed so depends may be an issue, note you could potentially have two versions of ruby installed this way, just letting ya know this requires a bit more matiance than using the power of apt
23:48<Doophus>(blinding dumb question I know)
23:49<somiaj>Doophus: the links will be left there, but they would be dead (don't point ot anything) and could mess wiht running things in your $PATH since /usr/local/bin takes power of /usr/bin
23:49<Doophus>:S
23:50<Doophus>haha okay :) Well if it all goes south, I will just re-install debian, it's a 30 minute endeavour worth the learning experience lol. Thanks again :)
