00:06<deZillium>Kiggy: that drive is failing with uncorrectable sectors. please back up important stuff asap, and replace it
00:06<deZillium>let me guess, a wd500bevt?
00:07<Kiggy>i have no idea, what computer is old enough to be my brother
00:07<Kiggy>its an old dell inspiron
00:07<Kiggy>the first one happened after a power outage
00:07<deZillium>the drive is failing. spent 4 months recovering data from a drive that was failing like that, for a client of mine
00:08<Kiggy>it has nothing of any importance, the entire setup process of the server is documented step by step via irc, i just use it as a media server and bouncer currently, mainly my pet project to get into linux
00:09<deZillium>then you didn't lose anything important :)

02:30<tylerw519>ok, I went inside the etc folder and looked and there wasn’t an X11. There wasn’t an option to install the desktops that I saw. The blank screen happened after an install and reboot. I can see the last bit of text scrolling before it goes blank is startx

06:57<dpkg>To get an NTFS or VFAT file system accessible by users and groups on the local machine, man mount; man 5 fstab; and read about the umask, fmask, dmask, uid, and gid options. You'll end up sticking something like conv=auto,uid=<user>,gid=<group>,dmask=0002,fmask=0003 into your fstab's mount option field.

12:24<Bluemoon>awal, thank you. should I close the IN or OUT connection for the system security
12:25<gsimmons>jla: Instead of bind mounts, consider supplying e.g. '-m /var/spool/postfix/var/run/saslauthd' to saslauthd instead; sasl2-bin's README.Debian and /etc/default/saslauthd have more information.
12:25<jla>gsimmons: I did, thank you. -m works great if you're not doing multi-instance and running multiple saslauthd instances also seems like overkill when a few bind mounts in /etc/fstab use to work great. :(

14:53<shadow>yep that would lock it
14:53<somiaj>shadow: well I am a novice here, I just kinda know the procedure, but my recomendittion is maybe get a package (see if you can some help from a mentor) to a state that it will be accepted by debian. Once you do that then it may be easier to try to get it uploaded or orphaned so you can adopt it.
14:54<mousa>yes, that unlocked itself. now updating

18:15<somiaj>jla: do you use systemd or sysvinit? Sounds like you will want an init script that mounts the location after the init scripts to mount /run are ran
18:15-!-calisto1 [~calisto@r190-135-59-121.dialup.adsl.anteldata.net.uy] has joined #debian
18:16<somiaj>jla: if /etc/fstab is parsed before /run is mounted, you will need to do some dependency init script, LSBheaders might work, though I belive this is something that systemd may work well for

18:18<somiaj>though I don't know what init script would be the one that mounts /run
18:20<jla>yes, sysvinit. My trouble is that I had some fstab entries that use to work but now fail because /run is in tempfs and mount_run is called after mount_all_local in mountall.sh
18:20<somiaj>jla: well you could just change the order in that init script
18:21<jla>that is true, but it would be a change to maintain each time mountall.sh is updated
18:21-!-mello [~mello@74.203.100.110] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
18:21<somiaj>jla: or make a new initscript that has 'Required-Start: mountall' and it will only be run after the mountall.sh script runs (which provides the mountall that you are depending on)

18:23-!-Ad_m [~Ad_m@82-160-246-71.tktelekom.pl] has joined #debian
18:23<somiaj>if I were you, which I'm not, I would just make a simple init script, I would probabaly mirror the mountall.sh script for syntax since this really isn't an init script that should be started/restarted (unless by restarting you mean unmount that thing and remount it)
18:23-!-john [~john@s3eea4516.adsl.online.nl] has joined #debian
18:23<jla>That might be the trouble. Actually I use to be bind mounting from /var/run/saslauthd to /var/spool/postfix*/var/run/saslauthd based on a number of older howtos
18:23<somiaj>jla: I wouldn't do a mount -a in rc.local, mount the exact thing you need (since the other stuff should be mounted already) and not have this thin mentioned in fstab
18:24<jla>But with /var/run moving to /run and as tempfs with local mounts happening first, this fails
18:24<jla>true
18:24<jla>good point
18:26<jla>The fact that /run is not mentioned in fstab has made tracking this down less obvious and more difficult than I think it should have been. Moving my bind mounts out feels a bit that way too. That's probably just something I need to get over
18:26<jla>Maybe the right thing would be to adjust postfix to do what it needs to do to have the mux when it chroots

22:41<somiaj>well what errors are happeneing to cause it to mount read only, sounds like you need to fsck your file system, which you'll want to do when it is mounted readonly and probablay not much running on it
