01:09<Amish>Hello, I have a connection issue between 2 of my servers. They refeuse to communicate to eachother (Get Connection timed out), while all other servers will communicate to/from them fine (I can ssh to each of them from my computer no problem). They are both running Debian 6.0. They use to connect fine for over half a year, and this issue started up today out of nowhere. They will ping each...
01:09<Amish>...other fine as well. I cannot ssh/ftp from one of them to the other, same errors from both sides. I have tried flushing iptables, added them to hosts.allow, netstat shows port 22 as listening, remade RSA keys, nmap shows all ports being filtered from one to the other, but not when nmap runs from a different server. I cannot seem to find what is blocking the connection, and would appreciate...
01:09<Amish>...any help on this matter.

03:37<babilen>An: Ah, how did you copy the image to the USB? Why are you using a live image and not the "normal" installer?
03:37<An>So I decided to use the live system, as I had done so with the Gnome image and there was an installer icon on the desktop which worked. I am now trying the debian-7.5.0-i386-CD-1.iso on the USB get to a user@debian~$ shell but cannot find what to do from there to install.

03:43<An>Is there a problem with UNetbootin ?
03:43-!-FragByte- [~FragByte@] has joined #debian
03:44<babilen>An: unetbootin is known to break our installers and causes the "cannot mount cd" error during the installation. I would recommend to use the normal installer (and the netinst one with firmware if you are connected to the internet) rather than performing a "manual" install with <debootstrap>

03:46<An>babilen can you expand on this a little
03:46<ananth123>cp ??? not dd ??
03:46<babilen>An: On which part exactly?
03:46<An>IHow does it make it bootable ?
03:47<babilen>ananth123: Yes, dd is slower by default and has awkward syntax
03:47<ananth123>i thought you needed dd to make it bootable... oh well :)
03:47<babilen>An: The image contains *everything* it needs and you don't have to make it bootable. Data is data and you just have to write the right data for it to be "bootable"
03:48-!-sergio-br2 [] has joined #debian
03:48-!-oneveu [] has joined #debian
03:48<An>OK, thanks very much I will try that
03:48<babilen>ananth123: dd just copies data and is in no way a "lower level" tool than cp (or anything else). Everything is a file!
03:48<babilen>dpkg: hybrid image
03:48<dpkg>Since the 6.0 "Squeeze" release, Debian installation images for x86 systems - e.g. <netinst>, <CD1>, DVD1 - are hybrid images. These can be written directly to CD or HD Media (e.g. USB thumbdrive) without further preparation. See for details. See also <install debian>, <usb install>.
03:49<ananth123>babilen: ok!
03:49<babilen>An: Also read the install guide (linked in the <usb install> factoid the bot sent you earlier) which goes into a bit more detail
03:50-!-Saxman [] has joined #debian
03:50<babilen>ananth123: dd is essentially only needed if you don't want to copy an entire file or express things like "copy three blocks of 4k each from /path/to/foo to /path/to/baz". And for that I personally prefer to use the "enhanced dd",dcfldd
03:50<babilen>ananth123: It is a common misconception (no idea why) that "dd" has some kind of superpower that is needed to wrote "down at the device layer"
03:51-!-xelan [~xelan@] has joined #debian
03:51<ananth123>babilen: i assumed that cp would ignore the boot sectors...hence, you wouldnt be able to boot.. i guess i was wrong
03:52<xelan>Hey guys, I put this in /etc/rc.local: '~/.quicktile/ -d' so it will autostart, but it doesn't do anything. The command is correct though. What am I doing wrong?
03:52-!-jackal [] has joined #debian
03:52<ananth123>my understanding of file systems is a bit flaky

03:53<xelan>babilen, sorry :D
03:53<xelan>^ ignore my request everyone :)
03:53<babilen>xelan: But okay, lets keep it here as I won't have to switch channels for you -- And your assumption on freenode is spot on. It is indeed not working because Xorg isn't running yet (and quicktile is not executed "in" Xorg)
03:54<babilen>xelan: Which DE/WM do you want to use it in and how do you start that?
03:54<xelan>babilen, the default xfce installation
03:55<babilen>xelan: Hmm, I'm a bit fuzzy on XFCE details, but it probably has some "autostart" functionality where you can add quicktile
03:55-!-_2rB [~IRC@] has joined #debian
03:55-!-Twofish [] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
03:55<xelan>babilen, I think I will be able to figure that out myself, now that I know why it's not working :)
03:56<xelan>so you helped me already a lot. Thank you!
03:56<babilen>xelan: You want "session and startup" in the "Settings manager" apparently
03:57<babilen>xelan: The alternative here would be to add a suitable .desktop file to ~/.config/autostart which would most likely be honoured by XFCE and executed correctly
03:58<xelan>babilen, I think I will just use the session manager of xfce. Just one last thing. Would this also work in /etc/init.d ?
03:59-!-jalalsfs__ [~jalal@] has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
03:59<babilen>"this" ?
03:59<babilen>xelan: Yeah, don't get me wrong: The recommendation is definitely to add it through the session manager
04:00<xelan>Assuming I have a number of scripts that shall run when X is up. Could I do a script like in /etc/init.d ?
04:00<babilen>(just wanted to show you a more general way in case you run into this in the future in a different context)
04:00<babilen>xelan: No, you want to do all that through the Xsession startup machinery
04:00-!-Guest9459 [] has left #debian [Sto andando via]
04:01<xelan>hmm okay
04:01<babilen> is the dull but correct reference documentation for that

19:17<sney>update-manager is a gui application so it'll launch the gui no matter where it's started from
19:18<sney>I don't have a wheezy system with a gui right now, so I can't test that, so you'll just have to try it and see. don't worry, it'll either work or it won't, but it won't break your system

You would still need a notifier if you wanted something to tell you when updates are available.
