#debian IRC Logs for 2014-05-05

---Logopened Mon May 05 00:00:57 2014
00:01<us`0gb>It looks like neither of these uses the hosts file. Instead, they block only while running in the browser. As I don't use a Mozilla-based browser, that doesn't work.
00:01<us`0gb>(I mean, I do use Iceweasel for a select few sites that refuse to play nice with Midori, but I'm usually on Midori.)

00:03<hugg>us`0gb: well if you want to be fancy, no, I don't know of a program to manipulate the hosts file for you. but you could just copy out the blocked lists from adblock plus.
00:04<michael_>so how does this whole thing work
00:05<us`0gb>hugg: Yeah, that's what my fallback plan was. Not specifically that list (I'll have to look at its format before I can tell if it will work), but if there's not an application available, I'll end up writing a script to read from some publicly-available lists.
00:05<us`0gb>How does what work, michael_?
00:06<michael_>like the xubuntu software mine is acting wierd
00:06<hugg>us`0gb: it's newlines, I think. but then filtering it with regexes is the easy part. you might want to weigh the value of doing that versus using a more mainstream browser with addons.

00:07<awal>us`0gb, I recommend you Iceweasel if privacy and security are important for you. At least chromium...
00:07<us`0gb>hugg: I've yet to find a decent browser. Midori is the closest I can find. Most other browsers annoy me far too much.

00:08<michael_>cant stand windows or xubuntu and linux just doesnt do it for me like it used oo.

00:08<us`0gb>awal: Chromium is one of the most annoying browsers I can find. It refuses to show the "http://" in URIs. It cannot be configured to do so.
00:09<us`0gb>Mozilla-based browsers have issues with URI-encoded characters, but at least they're not as bad as some browsers.
00:09<hugg>michael_: then roll your own DE, like all the ultanerds do. use a good tiling window manager and you're set.

00:10<michael_>thats the thing im new as hell to all of this
00:11<us`0gb>If you don't even like Xfce (Xubuntu's interface), I'm not sure what will work for you. GNOME2 is a popular choice.
00:12<us`0gb>Hmm. I don't see a package for it in modern Debian.

00:27<somiaj>us`0gb: what is wrong with not showing the http://, when you select it copies it.
00:29<us`0gb>somiaj: "", for example, is not a valid web address. The correct address is "", and it should be displayed as such. There is no good reason (aside from on mobiles, where screen estate is minimal) to mangle the address before displaying it to the user. It's a pet peeve of mine.

07:48<mestia>Hi All, I am seeing a weird behavior of aptitude reinstall - after I screwed up apparmor profile of lightdm, I removed the file from /etc/apparmour.d/ hoping that aptitude will reinstall the deleted file as well, but it doesn't! isn't it a bug ?
07:48-!-ao2 [] has joined #debian
07:48<mestia>so basically after typing aptitude reinstall lightdm, I am not getting the file back in /etc/apparmor.d/, thoug the package has it
07:49<dpkg>You have to especially tell the packaging system to reinstall config files because when they are gone, it is assumed that you want them to stay deleted. "aptitude -o DPkg::Options::='--force-confmiss' reinstall $packagename" will restore them (man dpkg for details). If the package uses <ucf> for config file management, ask me about <ucf confmiss>.

08:47*ixti can't upgrade network-manager, as it proposes to install systemd and replace sysv with shims o_O
08:49<themill>that's not quite true
08:49<ixti>oh, i hope so!
08:50<themill>however, if no-one volunteers to update logind to work without systemd as init, you will soon need systemd as init.

10:23<babilen>kulus1969: You essentially want something like "update-grub2 ; grub-install /dev/sdX" (with /dev/sdX something like /dev/sda and the disk you boot from)
10:23<babilen>dpkg: enter
10:23<dpkg>The enter key is not a substitute for punctuation. Hitting enter unnecessarily makes it difficult to follow what you are saying. Consider using ',', '. ', ';', '...', '---', or ':' instead. If you hit enter too often, you will be autokicked by debhelper for flooding the channel.

16:40<petn-randall>DarkUranium: No, those pending sectors will only go away if written to, and then only if the disk has enough reserve sectors. Since you don't know *where* they are, all kind of data could be corrupted by it. Best to start over from scratch with fresh hardware.

19:15<SynrG>_WildPikachu_: earlier on the wiki page "a reboot solves"… might apply?
19:15<SynrG>Not sure if that was meant only to apply to the mount or what
19:15<_WildPikachu_>SynrG, I found it thanks, lxc must be installed in the guest, something that was fixed in ubuntu but stills seems a problem in debian
19:15<_WildPikachu_>I'm not clued up enough to log a bug report for that though (yet)
19:16<_WildPikachu_>but lxc-init is part of lxc, and the lxc-debian script does not install lxc :)

19:51<somiaj>Brigo: that sounds like a very strange option, but I do belive I recall reading about them removing it from the change logs, you shouldn't have to reconfigure every packge on your system.
19:52<Brigo>somiaj, well there is a open bug realted:
19:52<somiaj>Brigo: here it is, Remove dpkg-reconfigure -a, which existed only to accumulate bug reports about bugs in other packages., Closes: #721329, #664825, #558262, #617618, #707987 (happened in debconf version 1.5.52)
19:52<Brigo>but no answer yet.
19:53<somiaj>why do you want to dpkg-reconfigure all packages after a debootstrap, I have never had to do that.
19:53<Brigo>if you get in troubles, you may need it.
19:54<Brigo>s/may/can/ i think :-m
19:54<somiaj>I still don't see the use of it when you should be reconfiguring the exact packages you are having trouble with.
19:54-!-iwtkwtlrinidt [~quassel@] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
19:54<somiaj>the only package I reconfigure is locales in a debootstrap after I install it.
19:55<somiaj>oh this is a cross post, yea look at the change log, /usr/share/doc/debconf/changelog.gz -- it hs that in there
19:56<Brigo>May be you never used it, but there are people who did it.
19:56<somiaj>it wouldn't be hard to emulate it, just run a script to dpkg-reconfigure -u package_name for all packages installed (maybe non lib packages)
19:57<Brigo>dpkg-reconfigure * ?

19:58<somiaj>Brigo: no, but read the bugreports in the numbers I sent you. If even one package has a bug where dpkg-reconfigure doens't work on it, it breaks the whole command, it was intersting
19:59<Brigo>somiaj, is there a easy way to read them?
20:00<somiaj>there are various ways, maybe 'aptitude search ~i' list all installed packages problem is it is something the 2nd and sometimes the 3rd sting for the package name

20:01<somiaj>Brigo: this is ugly, but it will work: dpkg -l | grep ^ii | awk '{print $2;}' | grep -v ^lib | xargs dpkg-reconfigure -u
20:01<somiaj>that will configure all installed packages that are not libs
20:01-!-Guest9655 [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
20:02<Brigo>yes, i see.
20:02<somiaj>but I agree with the reasons they removed that option, you don't to just reconfigure everything, to me the proper way would be identify the packages that need reconfigured and reconfigure them.
20:02<Brigo>i will make a script and sell it :)

21:18<uso>any recommendation for a good (and up-to-date) documentation how to handle tun/tap devices in debian?
21:20<uso>I have the impression that anything I find is outdated, talking about /dev/tap0 but there is no more /dev/tap0, there's MAKEDEV which can create them, but shouldn't you when udev runs? and there's /dev/net/tun (which works), but no /dev/net/tap ... all a bit confusing to me :)
