08:44<robinho>tem alguem por aí
08:44<chartax>I wonder if anyone can help me out with an ongoing issue I am having with Debian and my GPU (Nvidia GTX 580). Nouveau does not seem to work with this device at all, so I am trying to get it to work with the nvidia drivers. This used to work fine, but there must have been some sort of update to the nvidia drivers since I last installed Debian that results in them no longer working. I am installing them using Nvidia's own installer. When I try to l
08:44<chartax>oad the nvidia module, I get a "no such device" error. If I use the nvidia-xconfig utility, X can not start at all. Anyone got any advice or any idea how I can install an older version of the nvidia drivers, or something?
08:45<somiaj>chartax: please do not use the nvidia installer, that is a way to mess things up
08:46<somiaj>chartax: first what version of debian do you run, second lets clean up the mess you have created
08:46<chartax>somiaj, I initially attempted an installation with the nvidia-current package which resulted in me having to boot with the text option in grub

08:49<chartax>somiaj, yes, 3.2.0-4-amd64
08:49<somiaj>just double checking because some people get the newer kernels from wheezy-backports and for some reason the nvidia derivers were not complining against the new ones
08:49<chartax>alright, is there anything I should do before running the aptitude install command you linked to remove the binary module from the nvidia installer?
08:49<somiaj>chartax: okay so first, get the package nvidia-installer-cleanup (and clean up the mess you craeted by trying to install the drivers form nvidia.com)
08:50<somiaj>second follow those instructions to compile the module, it should be fairly automatic, the dkms packages are nice

09:07<chartax>somiaj, that seems to have worked perfectly, which is odd because I swear that's pretty much exactly what I did before trying the nvidia installer (alas with slightly less shell magic).
09:08<chartax>is there a way I can confirm that I am absolutely definitely not using nouveau? is it also called 'nvidia' if you do lsmod ?
09:08<somiaj>chartax: lsmod should show the nvidia driver loaded, but in an xterm type 'glxinfo' and 'xvinfo' they should both say nvidia drivers
