04:39<petan>jm: I need to set up environment before build based on system status, can I use it like a shell script?
04:40-!-pamaury_ [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
04:40<petan>I have a source package which needs to make sure that there is compiler which support c++11 and that it is used for build
04:40<petan>right now, even if g++-4.7 is installed in system, cmake decides to use g++ 4.6 which fails
04:40<Oebele>hello everybody, I recently re-installed debian 7, and I had expected to be working in Unity now, but it seems like I am working in Gnome 2, any idea what's wrong?
04:41<petan>in cmake channel they told me that cmake doesn't support this feature yet so I have to somehow make the packaging process change the build variables in cmake by passing it some arguments or setting environment variables before build that contains the path to proper compiler
04:41<newbieDebian>actually there was 3 option for installation and I select the 3rd option a complicated one probably that is the reason

20:48<themill>ntp can't change the time without changing the date. They're not separate concepts.
20:48<donofrio>turns out the cert was not valid cause my date was way back in 1969 or something like that
20:48<donofrio>themill, preaching to the choir
20:48<donofrio>hence why I'm asking why were are they separate packages
20:49-!-Airwave [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
20:49<jmcnaught>donofrio: the difference is ntp is a daemon that runs all the time, ntpdate is a command that you run periodically. it's mentioned in the description of the ntpdate package
20:49<themill>donofrio: when ntp is working it changes date+time. There is no difference between what ntp and ntpdate does other than ntpdate gives you sudden timewarps and its upstream developers don't want you to use it.
20:50<themill>donofrio: ntp *does* *not* only change the time.
20:51<donofrio>themill, all I know is my time updated perfectly once it was installed (in realtime updated) but didn't change the date, it was still December 31st 1969 once I install utpdate the date updated...althought it sounds like timing?

23:10<rmunn>Is there a polite way to tell a package maintainer, "Upstream has had a new version out for three months. I'd really like you to update your Debian package." Should I file a bug report, email the maintainer, or what? I want to be as polite as possible, especially since what I'm basically saying is "You're not doing your job promptly enough; three months is too long". Are there any established procedures for nudging a maintainer to update their package?

23:14<donofrio>rmunn, keep in context not all of us work and make money from packages
23:14<donofrio>file a bug and also start contacting author perhaps start taking up shell scripting to help out? ( just a thought)
23:14<chealer>rmunn: you can make sure issues in the packaged versions are properly tracked in the ITS. or you can, as is frequenly done, directly open an RFE requesting the update.
23:15<chealer>rmunn: if there's already a ticket, you can see why it's taking time or ask

23:19<rmunn>donofrio: I'm actually trying to learn to do packaging myself, so I can help -- but I'm trying to figure out how to best inform package maintainers (who, as you said, have other stuff they work on) that "Hey, there's a new version out".
23:20<rmunn>When I said the bit about not doing the job promptly enough, that's not what I would be saying explicitly -- but if I was a package maintainer, that's the subtext I would be hearing from someone saying "There's been a new version out for three months now." So I'm trying to find out if there's an established procedure for giving a polite nudge.

23:20<lostson>just because there is a new version is out does not mean it makes it to debian stable, it may however be in testing or sid though

23:22<chealer>rmunn: which package?
23:23<rmunn>There have been several recently. ConfigObj version 5 is the one I need for my current project (it adds Python 3 support, where ConfigObj 4 only supported up to Python 2.x).
23:23<rmunn>There's also a few other packages I need for a different project, but ConfigObj is the one I have the biggest need for.
23:24<rmunn>And yes, I could just use pip in a virtualenv -- but that's not as good as having the real Debian package.
23:24<rmunn>lostson: It's not yet in sid, I checked.

23:30<rmunn>jmcnaught: I get the basic concepts of packaging, but it's the specific infrastructure, and the unspoken social rules, that I haven't learned yet. E.g. whether it's polite to file a bug saying "Please package the new upstream release", or whether I should ask by private email, that sort of thing.

23:35<rmunn>chealer: says it was uploaded a month ago, and was uploaded in mid-February. So it's as likely to be stable as any other officially-released upstream cersion.
23:36<chealer>rmunn: right. it seems the project is a bit of a mess though. doesn't mention version 5, and that's what the Debian package uses.

23:37<rmunn>chealer: Probably an artifact of the change in maintainership of the upstream package: the PyPI entry for ConfigObj 5 has an entry "Homepage:"
23:37<rmunn>And says "This project is now maintained by Eli Courtwright and Rob Dennis with the blessing of original creator Michael Foord."

23:40-!-skribblezatcha [] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
23:40<rmunn>I'll go ahead and either file a new bug, or update to mention that ConfigObj 5 now supports Python 3. I'll probably create a new bug, though, because more has changed than just a new release, and the package maintainer will need to know about the new upstream maintainers, homepage, etc. as well as "hey, version 5 is out".
23:42<chealer>rmunn: if you truely consider that upstream solved 660172, it shouldn't be tagged upstream
23:42<chealer>and ideally tagged fixed-upstream instead
23:44<rmunn>chealer: That's another aspect of how Debian does things that I haven't learned yet. Is there a reference that mentions the "standard" set of tags to use on bugs, and what they mean? I haven't found it yet reading the policy manual or the new maintainer's guide.
