02:43<FakeBoost>Hello , is there an easy way to set a static ip?
02:43<helmut_>hi
02:45<jmcnaught>FakeBoost: "man interfaces" has information on that
02:46<FakeBoost>ok
02:46<FakeBoost>I hope it is easy.
02:47-!-mode/#debian [+l 662] by debhelper
02:47<jmcnaught>FakeBoost: i don't know what easy means to you. If you prefer using a GUI and you use Gnome, you can do it with the network settings
02:48<FakeBoost>ok, how?
02:48<FakeBoost>I haven't found any tutorial...
02:50-!-cesurasean [~Sean@c-71-207-227-197.hsd1.al.comcast.net] has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
02:51<jmcnaught>FakeBoost: click your name in top-right corner, select system settings. Click on network. Select the interface you want the static IP on and click the options button in bottom right corner. In the dialog that opens select the IPv4 tab. Change method from "Automatic (DHCP)" to Manual, enter the network settings
02:52<FakeBoost>Ok, and i basically choose any ip address of my invention?
02:52-!-JanC [~janc@ip-62-235-210-106.dsl.scarlet.be] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
02:53<jmcnaught>FakeBoost: i think you'll have to use an IP address that makes sense for the network you're on. https://wiki.debian.org/CategoryNetwork a lot of useful information

02:55<jmcnaught>FakeBoost: one more point which is obviously outside the scope of this channel, but your router might have the ability to do "static" IP leases so it remembers the MAC and always gives the same IP. You'll need to refer to your router documentation for that though
02:56<FakeBoost>Ok...

15:08<blake>i am trying to learn to use ssh. now i was going to turn on remote management on my wifi router. which i am guessing i would have to be using telnet to connect to the router. but how would i connect to my router from another network?
15:09<blake>would i have to enter in the ip address and then the net work address 192.168.1.1 ?
15:10<LtL>blake: you do not want to allow access to your router management from the outside.
15:11-!-lapache [~jon@0001c695.user.oftc.net] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
15:11<blake>normally i would agree but see i run my own company so working from home or another state is somthing that i really have no option with.
15:12<blake>and not only would i have to remotly manage my router but i would also be needing to access my office computer when i am not there for my work.
15:12<retrospectacus>forward the ssh port to an internal host and use a tunnel to access the router config from there
15:12-!-lapache [~jon@0001c695.user.oftc.net] has joined #debian
15:12<LtL>blake: your router (or most of them) would allow that usually on the WAN address port 8080 or something.
15:13<blake>the router dose have tunnling
15:13<blake>so i would say for example. telnet <ipaddresshere> <192.168.1.1here> ?
15:14<LtL>blake: just make the password extremely strong and try to change the port, 8080 is too common. check your rour config for options

15:14<dondelelcaro>blake: if you have an external host, the best method is to use openvpn or similar, and have your router(s) join the VPN
15:14<blake>LtL i should make the port as high as possible right ? that was what someone was telling me
15:14<dondelelcaro>blake: this might require you to switch to a router which runs openwrt or similar, but you should probably do that already.
15:15<LtL>blake: yeh 48000 or higher
15:15<LtL>blake: dondelelcaro has the best method
15:15<retrospectacus>blake: never ever use, say or even think about telnet
15:15<blake>LtL i am not sure why but why do they say set it as high as possible ?
15:15<dondelelcaro>telnet is fine; telnetd is almost certainly not what you want...
15:16<blake>retrospectacus i would much rather use ssh than telnet but from what i have seen in my router it dosnt say anything about ssh. I am going to later try and find a router than i can use ssh with.

23:07<LtL>twb: don't you have a /var/log/syslog file
23:07<twb>No because busybox syslogd uses a ring buffer in memory

23:08<twb>(Which is *why* I'm using it.) But for some reason it's not talking to me, though syslogd is running, which is weird.
23:08<twb>If I restart busybox syslogd, logread works. So why is it not behaving correctly at boot time...

23:13<twb>Argh, and I've disabled strace for security reasons, so I can't strace to find out what file logread looks at
23:13<twb>Let's see if the problem comes back again after a third reboot...
23:15<dondelelcaro>*why* would you disable strace?
23:15<twb>to make life harder for people trying to trace things
23:15<twb>I mean chromium was already doing it; I just turned it on host-wide
23:16<dondelelcaro>but you have to be the owner of whatever process you're tracing...
23:16<twb>I can allow it again by rebooting
23:16<twb>dondelelcaro: or privesc to CAP_SYS_ADMIN
23:16<twb>But yeah I realize it's not a super important thing to disable
23:17<twb>kernel/yama/ptrace_scope=3 is the knob I'm talking about, fyi
