00:39<John[Lisbeth]>this isn't directly related to debian but I don't know where else to turn
00:39<John[Lisbeth]>it relates to shell scripting
00:39<John[Lisbeth]>I am trying to do something like this:
00:39<John[Lisbeth]>echo `echo \`echo "hello"\``
00:39<John[Lisbeth]>sorry I mean
00:39<John[Lisbeth]>echo `echo \`echo $myvariable\``
00:40<sney>#bash is probably a good place to turn
00:40<John[Lisbeth]>which server?
00:40<themill>John[Lisbeth]: you might also find $( ... ) is less brain hurting than ` ... `
00:40<sney>both here and freenode apparently
00:40<John[Lisbeth]>$() has the same problem
00:41<John[Lisbeth]>since it is "nested" it opens the command in it's own shell that is sandboxed from the shell above
00:41<John[Lisbeth]>so it doesn't know that $variable exists above
00:46<jmcnaught>John[Lisbeth]: try exporting the variable first, but like the others said #bash is probably a better place to ask
00:46<John[Lisbeth]>export how?
00:46<themill>real commands and real output in pastebin are also necessary
00:47<John[Lisbeth]>I can show you my shell script if you want but it's very complex
00:47-!-Hariharan [~harihare@] has joined #debian
00:47<themill>then make a minimal working example
00:47<John[Lisbeth]>that's what I just did
00:47<John[Lisbeth]>in my shell script I have a variable called $myvariable
00:47<themill>I'd like to see the actual command and output in a pastebin
00:47<John[Lisbeth]>I am trying in the scrypt to do this: echo `echo \`echo $myvariable\``
00:48<themill>use $() instead
00:48<John[Lisbeth]>themill: that gives me the same error
00:48<themill>I'd like to see the actual command and output in a pastebin
00:48<John[Lisbeth]>it tries to run "myvariable" as a command
00:48<John[Lisbeth]>ok just a sec
00:48-!-Schnabel- [] has joined #debian
00:48<themill>you'd get the same without the export
00:51<John[Lisbeth]>all I need then is a command to unexport it so it doesn't stay in memory

02:31<jpinx>depends how critical your swappiness is...
02:31<xwl>if there is a much newer upstream version of a deb package, what is the appropriate way to fix it? mail the maintainer? e.g., the `global' deb is rather old(5.7.*), but upstream is 6.3.
02:31<phillipsjk>after running "apt-get update", I have only 625kB of swap in use.
02:31<themill>xwl: the easiest way is to convince the maintainer to update the package. Good luck with that...

03:00<dpkg>[noresume] the boot parameter that you can add to your kernel boot command line so that the kernel doesn't try to resume back into your running session after <suspend>. Be warned that you will lose any unsaved work and your filesystems will be left in an inconsistent state as you effectively crash the kernel.

14:07<phillipsjk>essentially, with the hardware clock set to local time, the time is ambiguous around the time-change. MIcrosoft finally fixed UTC support in Windows 7 (or 8, not sure which)
14:08<adminewb>using clean reboots in between, I'd been sharing /home for a long time between ubuntu & debian; one has a gnome desktop, the other is xfce; any conflicts between them regarding gui settings at least are not noticeable

Alternatively: "cp -b /usr/share/zoneinfo/$TZ /etc/localtime". Note that tzselect(1) does not change the timezone. Postfix users: execute "invoke-rc.d postfix restart" to update localtime in the chroot.
14:15<adminewb>but if I specifically avoid some obvious troubles, like leaving some partially-saved /home document changes in a text editor, syncing then hibernating with shared use of a /home mount is not so awful?

Would VNC be the program I would use? I understand there is UltraVNC, TigerVNC, VNC, etc. Which version should be installed and are they available in the repositories? Sorry for the long question, I appreciate any help
20:39<sney>Guest13850: I prefer xrdp for that since it has auth
20:39<john2>I've just installed av linux 6.0.3: two problems: the main menu is in a foreign (not english) language and 2/ my screen resolution is all wrong I need to up it
20:39<Guest13850>xrdp, I will look into that thanks
20:39<sney>trollus: you really just need to make sure your mysql server and your php application agree on how they are connecting to each other. a common mismatch is php looking for a tcp connection, but mysql is using a unix socket
20:40<sney>john2: 1) I've never heard of av linux, but 2) if it's based on debian 6.0.3 that's a version behind stable, so 3) you should really just start over and install debian 7 from

20:50<chealer>Guest13850: VNC is a protocol. you can connect through various protocols depending on the kind of access you want (command line / shell or a graphical interface)
20:50<trollus>sney: it's nearly morning and I must make at least registration/tests engine :D would be nice if you give me a minute or two ^^

22:36<Jehde>Anyone willing to help me debug a runtime error related to OpenGL3?
22:37<Jehde>I get the following whenever trying to run an OpenGL3 executable (that compiles fine):
22:37<Jehde>Inconsistency detected by dl-version.c: 224: _dl_check_map_versions: Assertion `needed != ((void *)0)' failed!
22:37<jpinx>mask: you mean a live image ?
22:37<Jehde>OpenGL2 seems to be fine.
22:37<Fenhl>hello, I'm looking for Debian release events (like the start of squeeze LTS yesterday, or the jessie freeze in November) as a calendar I can subscribe to
22:38<Fenhl>does that exist?
22:38<mask>jpinx, yeah somthing i could burn to a usb to load to a computer
22:39<jpinx>!tell Fenhl about release dates
22:40<Fenhl>jpinx: that wasn't very helpful
22:41<jpinx>Fenhl: learn how to use the bot in here ;)
22:41<jpinx>!jessie freeze
22:41<dpkg>Remember, remember, the fifth of November, gunpowder treason and plot! Debian 8.0 "Jessie" will be frozen on 2014-11-05 after which no new versions of packages will enter the release and a period of intense bug fixing begins. See or ask me about <slushy>.
22:42<jpinx>Fenhl: the general rule with debian is it'll be released when it's ready -- not on a specific date
22:42<mask>jpinx thx much
22:44<jpinx>mask: np :)
22:45<chealer>Fenhl: unlikely. there wouldn't be much in such a calendar, unless you have a very broad definition

23:33<Stryker>I just installed a package from a .deb file, and whenever I try to start the program, I am met with a command not found
23:34<Stryker>I checked the status of the package via dpkg and it says it's correctly installed, so I don't know what to do next
23:34<peterS>you probably want to do 'dpkg -L packagename' and see what files it installed
23:34<peterS>perhaps the command you're typing is not exactly the same as what the package actually ships
23:35<peterS>to see what files it installed that would be in your normal system path, try 'dpkg -L packagename | grep /bin'
23:36<peterS>(if there are none, then either it doesn't ship executables, or it puts them somewhere else and you'll have to adjust your PATH or something)
23:36<peterS>actually, 'grep bin/' is better as that will catch the sbin dirs as well
23:36<Stryker>I have two machines, and the install worked on one and not the other
23:36<Stryker>identical machines - identical updates
23:36<peterS>run the dpkg -L, see where the binary you're trying to run is actually installed
23:37<Stryker>then what?
23:37<Stryker>open the binary, right?
23:37<peterS>start with that
23:37<peterS>tell us where it is supposed to be
23:37-!-skribblezatcha [] has left #debian []
23:38<peterS>then if it's where you expected, check 'echo $PATH' to see if the directory is in your PATH
23:38<Jehde>Anyone have an idea why my terminal opens everytime I log in to Debian 8?
23:38<peterS>a common difference that is easy to overlook is, if you're logged in as root, by default your system PATH is a bit different from what a normal user gets
