02:47<somenamevm>I am in the usr/bin directory and I want to make links to the desktop that I can click. The files program on debian has the options to do that greyed out, I assume because I need to run that program as root
02:53<themill>if you're wanting to make desktop icons, you'd do that from your desktop and as your user, not in /usr/bin as root
02:53<somenamevm>How would you do it?
02:54<themill>I have no idea how you'd do it in your particular desktop environment.
02:54<somenamevm>Intuitively I would go to applications then pick the program I want, right click it or copy it to the desktop
02:55<themill>no, you'd go to the desktop and say "create new shortcut" or something
02:55<somenamevm>Yeah, that doesnt seem to work

16:28<Marillion>zykotick9: the unix-like is you have a web-server (apache) at localhost,if not you can read the files with any browser
16:29<pengl0>sgfxi does not work- it installs 173.14.39 API drivers, while my kernel module is 173.14.35. so there is a mismatch. outside of that, I do manage to install nvidia drivers. but my resolution is always 640 x 480, and nothing I do seems to ammend that.
16:31<Guest12027>have you tried the sgfxi forums?
16:31<babilen>dpkg: sgfxi
16:31<pengl0>no I have not actually. But I did search them...
16:31<dpkg>smxi is an interactive Debian system maintenance script; its sgfxi script module can install non-free graphics drivers. Not supported in #debian. #smxi on
16:32<babilen>pengl0: Any particular reason why you don't just install the Debian packages?
16:32<pengl0>babilen:limited Res is always the issue. Drivers works fine
16:33<pengl0>but cannot go past 640 x 480. Ok, lets say I do nvidia-xconfig
16:33<babilen>That's also not really recommended, but pray continue
16:33<pengl0>it breaks my setup! hence, I'm using a live CD to seek you expert's help
16:34<pengl0>well, I am beginning to understand why! Babilen, I have tried this for weeks now. without success. My xorg file always gets mucked in such a fashion as to cause the error "no screens found" .The log says a screen was found, but no usable configuration...
16:34<Guest12027>so you need to remove all traces of sgfxi and restore configuration, reinstall if you have a backup

16:37<pengl0>okay... Here I goes again.
16:37<babilen>pengl0: You don't need nor want a /etc/X11/xorg.conf (so remove that and don't use nvidia-xconfig)
16:37<pengl0>: o
16:38<babilen>dpkg: empty xorg.conf
16:38<dpkg>Starting from Debian 5.0 "Lenny", /etc/X11/xorg.conf is often basically empty or non-existent, as X auto-detects your hardware and starts the X server accordingly, nothing to worry about. Ask me about <xorg config> and <xrandr> for ways to configure Xorg. See also <xorg manual config>, <xorg.conf.d>, <xorg hal>.
16:38<pengl0>how did I not know this.. smh
16:38<babilen>The only thing you want to configure is "use the nvidia driver" which is why you create a configuration file containing only that information in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/
16:39<pengl0>gotcha. i understand

16:48<pengl0>would debian sit well with that?
16:49<pengl0>Antix is a flash on this, but its just with this current setup, I have had these issues.
16:50<Marillion>pengl0: sure, but your hardware is very old
16:50<babilen>pengl0: I wouldn't necessarily try to run Gnoem or KDE on it, but yeah

16:53<oldlaptop>you could even have KDE4 in that amount of RAM (the CPU is less of a concern)
16:53<babilen>You probably do want to use a lightweight display manager such as lightdm so install that too.
16:53<babilen>But yeah, I don't see a real problem with that hardware either
16:53<oldlaptop>in fact the 6GB of hard disk space will be much more troublesome, depending on what you need to do
16:53<pengl0>"/msg eh? heh >.>
16:54<pengl0>yes laptop. the space IS an issue
16:54<pengl0>but I have 30GBs total. Would just do away with a big chunk of XP. seeing that I'm decidedly against reverting to that..
16:54<oldlaptop>6GB of hard disk is more than enough for the base system
16:54<oldlaptop>even a fairly heavy DE would fit in there
16:55<oldlaptop>but you'll run out of space for other things pretty fast
16:55<pengl0>I truly liked Antix though - and would reccomend even u pr0s giving it a try. Would likely be less hassle for u than I. The thing about debian admittedly - is the level of support...
16:56<oldlaptop>you still don't need much - my entire / (i.e. the OS and all applications) is 21GB, and I'm wasting a lot of space in there

20:17<SlippedNfell>If my 'Windows' partition is before my Debian parition, is it risky to shrink the Windows partition and expand my Debian backwards?
20:21<oldlaptop>what you will end up doing in that case (I believe?) is *moving* the Debian partition, then expanding it
20:21<oldlaptop>which is relatively risky - better hope you don't have a power failure when it's half moved
20:21<oldlaptop>keep backups, you'll be fine
20:22<SlippedNfell>Righteous. Thanks.
20:24<oldlaptop>keep backups whether you're resizing partitions or not, of course

20:41<IceGuest_77>Hi guys, I really need help. I have got debian and when I install compat drivers for ethernet, then one program doesnt start, bcs of: Invalid MIT-COOKIE Segmentation fault. What can I do ? I have to have that program running in next three hours...
20:42<Brigo>IceGuest_77, what compat drivers?
20:42<IceGuest_77> These
20:42<IceGuest_77>I should mention, that its live distro running on usb flash drive.
20:43<IceGuest_77>It was already working for three months, but there was error and when I reinstalled debian that program was working and when I install these drivers, it doesnt work anymore.
20:44<Brigo>IceGuest_77, alx is already in wheezy kernel
20:44<IceGuest_77>Brigo: I am using older version of debian, which didnt get alx yet.
20:44<Brigo>which one?
20:45<IceGuest_77>Brigo: 2.6.32-5-686

20:50<Brigo>IceGuest_77, i told you about backports, becasue may be you can install a new kernel with alx.
20:51<Brigo>IceGuest_77, if you are talking about compat drivers, did you compile them?
20:51<IceGuest_77>Brigo: I only did three commands from that guide page: scripts/driver-select alx;make;make install
20:53<Brigo>IceGuest_77, well may be it should work, if that install scripts do the things well, but you should ask the script author why his scripts do not work for you.
20:53<IceGuest_77>Brigo: But it worked for me, when I was installing it for the first and the second time...
20:54<Brigo>IceGuest_77, may be squeeze get updated and the drivers lost compatibility with new stuff updated.
20:55<IceGuest_77>Brigo: I am using same old version, which I was using for the first time.
20:56<Brigo>IceGuest_77, if all the software is all the same, and you did the same, i have no clues for you.
20:56<IceGuest_77>Brigo: Yea, its the reason, why I came there :/
20:57<Brigo>did you try to google the error message? it should be your best bet.
20:59<IceGuest_77>Yes, I already tried many commands, but none of them fixed that problem.

23:53<tuv>how can i 'make install' without polluting my debian system? is there something similar to python's virtualenv?
23:55<SamB>you could, um, package that software for Debian
23:55<dpkg>i guess stow is a nifty program used to manage a /usr/local/ hierarchy. It keeps all the programs separate, so you can install and remove them without playing the "which program does that file belong to" game; ask me about <stow usage>. . See also <usrlocal>, <uupdate>.
23:56*sney uses stow as part of a packaging workflow, to see what things want to be where

23:57<tuv>so stow, not xstow?

23:59<tuv>what about checkinstall?
