02:11<twb>mm, debtags was my plan A, though I've noticed in the past that there's often neat packages that don't have (m)any tags, so you don't find them

02:12<jm_>although it's easy to understand why
02:12<twb>yeah because people don't use it so they don't add tags for it, so they don't find it so they don't use it... ;-)
02:13<twb>That's odd -- aptitude finds 244 hits from ~Glearning, but debtags.d.n only says "about 36 hits"

03:51<HB33>Nvidia - decent graphics card manufacturer or scuzzy unethical bastards that make crap video cards?
03:52<HB33>It turns out it was the video card costing me hours of time troubleshooting. Is there a company that makes graphics cards that is more well known to support Linux?
03:52<jhen>how can i connect to other computer via remote connection? using debian?
03:53<jm_>HB33: depends what your needs are

03:54<HB33>I was doing what jhen is trying to do with connecting to other computers and I think the nvidia card driver was causing that to fail as well.
03:54<jm_>HB33: in that case intel built in graphics of modern CPU-s is mostly good enough
03:54<HB33>This is a pentium 4 system from 2002 about
03:54<HB33>with an agp graphics card

03:55<jm_>yeah I remember issues with nvidia agp cards back then but it has mostly been fixed, otherwise there's nvagp option which could help
03:57<HB33>Well I dont know what that is and nvidia has been causing problems on my computers on one issue or another every year for since I think 15 years. I have had enough of that company. I might try ebay and buy a few older agp cards, one might work.
03:58<jhen>how can i install package using non-root user?
03:58<jhen>it shows
03:58<jhen>@@@is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported.
03:59<jm_>you could add user to group sudo if it's configured so in sudoers
04:00<jhen>how?

06:32<madmac2501>hi
06:32<kris>hey
06:32<d-fence>Hi, It seems that something changed with user privileges. In XFCE, the "shutdown" and "suspend" actions are greyed. Also, I cannot shutdown as a simple user in Gnome3. I'm not able anymore to mount unmount external disks. I tought it was my mistake but some people around me have the same problem. Is there something to do with policykit or something ? I can't find any bug report about that.
06:32<madmac2501>i've got this problem when I update http://pastebin.com/kwC4pNrY is there a way to fix it manually before updating? I would like to do an automated update

08:38<rostam>hid3, I know how to list installed debian packages on a system using dpkg -l. If I want to know a specific pkg is installed, is there a better command than dpkg -l | grep <pkgname> thx.
08:39<themill>!installed test
08:39<dpkg>To test in a script if a package is installed, you can: if dpkg -l $package 2>/dev/null | grep -q ^.i; then echo yes; fi or if [[ $(dpkg-query -f'${Status}' --show $package 2>/dev/null) = *\ installed ]]; then echo yes; fi. Note that "installed" isn't a simple concept -- is the package configured yet? is it actually scheduled for removal? See man dpkg "package states" and "selection states" for more details.
