01:30<rjsalts>practicing01: there is stuff in the repo for package maintenance. this your own software?
01:30<practicing01>not sure, it's a game i've made that uses an engine i haven't made. the engine is MIT
01:31<rjsalts>https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/maint-guide/ is a walkthrough/tutorial on packaging
01:32<practicing01>i'm in search of something that will create binaries compatible on debian based systems (ubuntu/mint/steam os).
01:32<practicing01>is there any software or services that will automatically do that for me?
01:32-!-trifolio6 [~h@34.140.100.84.rev.sfr.net] has joined #debian
01:34<rjsalts>you're going to have to define what you mean by that more clearly before I could give an answer
01:35<rjsalts>there are certainly services that will build .deb files from a debian source package against multiple distributions
01:35<rjsalts>such as the opensuse build service
01:35<practicing01>i thought deb files contained binaries, am i mistaken?
01:36<rjsalts>deb files do contain binaries, but creating a binary compatible with any distro is not something that can necessarily happen automagically
01:37<practicing01>indeed, so opensuse build service will do that for me? are there other options as well?
01:37<rjsalts>you're possibly going to need to compile from source
01:38<practicing01>my game is open source, no problem there. the reason i need the binary is because i'm assuming that's what steam will want
01:38-!-innpc [~innpc@210.123.244.118] has joined #debian
01:38<rjsalts>you can set up your own build farm with a bunch of work, or contribute to debian/ubuntu/mint/...
01:38<rjsalts>noclue on what steam require, but I think they don't use the native packaging formats
01:39<practicing01>i think you're right. instead of a packaging service then, do you know of services that will create binaries?
01:43<rjsalts>you only need to create the binary once, by compiling it
01:43<rjsalts>and then package it in whatever system steam uses
01:43-!-sleser [~sleser@ool-1892ffa5.dyn.optonline.net] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
01:44<rjsalts>although steam doesn't track dependencies and the like from the native package manager
01:44<practicing01>well i made a binary on my machine but one person who tried running it on their machine said it didn't work. missing dependencies i'm guessing
01:44<rjsalts>for instance I have shadowrun returns on steam and the game works fine out of the box, but it comes with a level editor which was missing a whole lot of libraries
01:45<rjsalts>practicing01: ldd /path/to/your/binary
01:45-!-dualbus [~dualbus@dualbus.me] has joined #debian
01:46<rjsalts>will tell you the libraries it depends on if it's an ELF executable or shared library

06:39<Eremiell>mongrol: you can exit any shell including the root one by producing EOF character. To do that, just press ctrl+d. simple as that. plays well with ctrl+c and other combos, your fingers will easily remember for you. ;)
06:40<Eremiell>in fact by doing su, you stack another shell on top of current one.

08:34<Sander>Hello, i have a question about iptables and fail2ban. I am running Debian. I was wondering if opening port 22 in iptables will screw up my fail2ban. The reason i want to open port 22 is because i have a rule dropping all requests at the bottom, that way i am just making exempt rules above the "drop all" rule.

09:07<abrotman>daemonkeeper: people running game servers think they do :)
09:07<daemonkeeper>No, you do not. You denial the service of your system yourself doing that.

09:12<voltagex>erm, I'll downgrade the installer.
09:12*grummund was going to log the fan speeds and then produce a histogram (or somethin :p)

12:40<dpkg>When you get random packages from random repositories, mix multiple releases of Debian, or mix Debian and derived distributions, you have a mess.
