01:09-!-nfroidure [~nfroidure@ALille-156-1-53-22.w90-47.abo.wanadoo.fr] has joined #debian
01:09<WayGood>a friend of mine wanted to install some random application that refused to start without it
01:10<WayGood>jm_ he added the debian unstable repositories in sources.list and then used apt to upgrade it
01:11<jm_>WayGood: how much was upgraded?
01:11<WayGood>do you want me to ask him what else he upgraded?/
01:12<WayGood>jm_ he upgraded libc6-amd64 libc6-dev libc6-dbg
01:12-!-SplifStar [~kphayes@pool-71-167-172-76.nycmny.fios.verizon.net] has joined #debian
01:13<jm_>WayGood: just that?
01:13<WayGood>i belive so, yes
01:13<jm_>in that case boot with a rescue system and downgrade them manually
01:14<WayGood>jm_ so boot from a live-cd or similar, mount the other systems hdd, but what would I do from there?
01:16<jm_>WayGood: assuming you have stable versions of these packages in /var/cache/apt/archives, cd there and use dpkg -i to install them all at the same time (dpkg -i pkg1...deb pkg2....deb ...)
01:17<WayGood>jm_: wouldn't that install it on the liev system though?
01:17<WayGood>live*
01:17-!-pamaury_ [~quassel@vit94-1-82-67-248-70.fbx.proxad.net] has joined #debian
01:18<jm_>WayGood: right, you need to mount and chroot as in:
01:18<jm_>!fixmbr
01:18<dpkg>To reinstall <GRUB> boot to your Debian install disk/live CD, switch to the other console (Alt-F2), then mount your root filesystem (mount -t ext2 /dev/whatever /target ; mount --bind /dev /target/dev ; mount -t proc none /target/proc ; mount -t sysfs none /target/sys), then chroot into it (chroot /target) and run "update-grub && grub-install /dev/whatever". See also <rescue mode>, <dual boot guide>, <supergrub>. Also works for EFI!
01:19<jm_>it probably won't be -t ext2 and if you use some more capable live image, you won't need -t anyway (hint: grml)
01:19<jm_>of course don't do the grub thing
01:19<WayGood>ok, i have a live cd downloading now, thanks for your help, I will be back if I have problems, thanks
01:20<jm_>no problem

04:31<babilen>arg_: So, what happens here is that you remove a dependency of the metapackage which also removes the matapackage (as one of its dependencies can no longer be satisfied). This, in turn, leads to the situation that all other dependencies will be removed as there is not reason anymore to keep them installed.

04:37<babilen>And no, you shouldn't/cannot tell the metapackage that it no longer depends on gnome. The solution is to use a *smaller* metapackage (e.g. gnome-session) and to explicitly mark everything else you want to keep as manually installed.
04:38<arg_>babilen, with gnome i mean the meta package or the that 3 files aptget wants to remove; gnome gnome-core task-gnome-desktop

06:56<asg>What to do?
06:56<petn-randall>asg: You'll need to install grub onto the drive that you boot from. Grub can easily chainload Windows 7.
06:57<asg>So in Windows 7?

15:08<jmcnaught>fr33domlover: it looks like iceweasel stores the CA certificates in each users profile in ~/.mozilla/firefox. As far as I can tell there's no way to add a CA system-wide for Iceweasel. I'd be interested if you find a solution though
15:09<fr33domlover>jmccrohan, I'm fine with a per-user solution
15:09<fr33domlover>I mean, jmcnaught
15:09<fr33domlover>It uses its own list anyway, so there's no integration either way
15:10<ncl>You can add certs in the options Advanced->Certificates->View Certificates

15:23<fr33domlover>By the way, adding a CA systemwide doesn't make much sense because one user could trust the CA, while another may choose not to

15:26<dondelelcaro>fr33domlover: I think it should go both ways; you should be able to have a system wide list, and users should be able to override that system-wide list...
15:27<dondelelcaro>fr33domlover: but bootstrapping trust is hard

15:28<fr33domlover>dondelelcaro, the system-wide list is a workaround, causing your computer to trust many websites (including treacherous ones like g00gle and fakebook) without asking you. But it's already available via the ca-certificates package

19:31<antgel>hello people. bit frustrated on the desktop. running xfce / chrome / pulseaudio etc, have an athlon 64 x2 5200+ cpu (not the newest but still), and load average around 1.5 - 2.5 when system at idle. xorg running about 17% cpu even though i have hardware accel on my radeon. any hints? i feel that my hardware should be able to cope better - am i deluded?
19:31<antgel>pulseaudio constantly around 6-10%
19:31<antgel>have 4GB RAM, only 3.3 in use even though i have several tabs open

19:32<antgel>#hardware told me windows is much better at desktop. i don't know, i've used linux forever, i like the tools, windows always feels like bloatware. is there something in what they're saying that windows is a better desktop option from a hardware usage perspective?

23:04<jmcnaught>jest: You could do it like this: https://wiki.debian.org/WiFi/HowToUse#Command_Line or if you use NetworkManager you could also use nmcli
23:04<twb>jest: depends.
23:04<twb>jest: you can often turn off the hardware itself using rfkill
23:05<jest>twb, i tried rdkill, terminal responded 'command not found'
23:05<twb>Your userland might get confused by that, though. If you're using simple interfaces(5) setup, you can "ifdown wifi0" or so. If you're using some GUI thing like network-manager or wicd, I have no idea.
23:05<twb>jest: so you need to install it. And probably need to be root to use it.

23:07<jest>twb, is there a wiki about rfkill?

23:08<jest>jmcnaught, im currently looking through the wiki you sent
23:08<twb>There's a manpage.

23:09<jest>hmm ok, let me re-phrase the question. I disabled my wifi and now i cant reactivate it for some reason. It seems that airplane mode is permanently 'on'
23:09<twb>jest: sudo apt-get install rfkill; sudo rfkill list
23:09<jest>thats why im trying to find a terminal solution to the problem, but now im seeing too much code
23:09<jest>ok
23:09<twb>http://sprunge.us/GKPP see mine say "no" so they're on

23:10<jest>twb so for me under phy0 it says hard blocked yes
23:10<jest>how do i change that?
23:11<twb>sudo rfkill unblock phy0

23:12<jmcnaught>jest: does your laptop have a hardware switch/button for disabling wifi?
23:12<jest>jmcnaught, yes, but its not having any effect
23:12<twb>jmcnaught: did it give any error?
23:12<twb>Er jest
23:12<twb>jest: also check the bottom of dmesg

23:13<jest>twb, phy0 is still hard blocked even after running the unblock command
23:13<twb>OK check if dmesg mentions anything interesting
23:13<jest>the output is a couple of pages, anything specific i should look for?
23:13<twb>Also as jmcnaught said, see if there's a hardware wifi switch, or maybe something like Fn+F2 --> wifi icon
23:14<twb>jest: don't know, but something like "rfkill - failed to unblock phy0" would be obvious
23:14<twb>jest: it's date ordered -- look at the bottom page or so only.
23:14<twb>Or you can run "sudo dmesg -c >/dev/null" to empty it, then try unblock again, and see if there's any output in "dmesg" afterward
23:15<jest>the line at the bottom says "eth0: link becomes ready"
23:15<jest>any yeah, Fn+F2 is to enable the wifi, but its not working
23:16<twb>I'm out of ideas then
23:16<twb>apart from reboot maybe and check BIOS settings
23:16<jest>ok, i was afraid you were going to say that
23:17<twb>rfkill is in the kernel, and if the kernel can't unblock it, probably nothing can
23:17-!-nsa311-u is now known as RadioStar
23:17<twb>except below the kernel -- BIOS and hardware
23:17<jest>is there another name for phy0?

23:22<twb>jest: oh right
23:22<twb>try "sudo rfkill unblock all"
23:23<jest>twb yeah, tried that..........
23:23<twb>I had another look at the help and it looks like you're supposed to give the number or the name, so e.g. "unblock 0" not "unblock phy0"
