01:15<Omniplatypus>Good evening! I accidentaly uninstalled gnome. Is there any way to reinstall it other than downloading the .deb and each dependency and then running dkpg on them? My internet connection is made through wi-fi and since gnome's network manager is also gone, i can't access the repositories through command line.
01:16<jm_>are you saying you no longer have it in /var/cache/apt/archives?
01:17<Omniplatypus>Synaptics removed it. I tried alt+F7 after boot and nothing happened.
01:17<jm_>removed what? the individual package files?

01:19<Omniplatypus>Removed the package. I'm not sure exactly what, i'm starting on Linux. On the progress window it showed "removing gnome..." and all of the gnome-related packages. Then, when i rebooted, i had promt only.

01:21<Omniplatypus>There, Old_Dog.
01:21<jm_>so why not check the directory I mentioned earlier to see if the packages are still there
01:21<Old_Dog>Thanks,
01:23<Omniplatypus>I will. Checking the directory means rebooting the computer to have access to the Linux partition, so i would like to reboot as few times as necessary. Do you have anything else in mind?

01:38<jmcnaught>Omniplatypus: my advice would be use an ethernet cable if possible, or use https://wiki.debian.org/WiFi/HowToUse#Command_Line to connect to wifi and simply "apt-get gnome" (or a different DE/WM's package if that's what you want)
01:39<Omniplatypus>I tried apt-get install gnome. It gave me dependency error and told me to try apt-get -f install, which gave me a network related error. About using an ethernet cable, there is a problem. My internet connection depends on logging in from an internet browser. I don't think i have a spare cable so i can plug it on the router.
01:40<jmcnaught>!apt offline
01:40<dpkg>To use apt on a machine that doesn't have a network connection (if you have a separate machine that does have a network connection), read http://batmat.net/apt-offline/ch3.html . Ask me about <apt-zip>, <apt-walkabout>.

01:42<jmcnaught>Omniplatypus: ^^^ might be another way to do it? you can "/msg dpkg apt-zip" or the other <keys> for more info. You might also still have a TUI web browser installed like "w3m" which might be sufficient to connect to your wifi. Or find a spare cable, or move the computer closer to the router if the cable's not long enough :)
01:44<jm_>also it might help if you tell us what the error was ...

01:47<Omniplatypus>Btw, my connection has no password. It's security is through mac address. Only the configured mac addresses can connect.

02:02<jmcnaught>Omniplatypus: when you installed Debian in the first place, did you configure the wifi details in the installer? Is the wifi still configured in /etc/network/interfaces? Maybe network-manager is still installed (unlikely) and you can use "nmcli con list" to find your connection id, then "nmcli con up id 'the connection id'" to bring up the connection? Otherwise if the computer is portable, maybe it's easiest for you to wait for an opportunity to m

02:39<jmcnaught>hasan1994: probably not for another year. After the freeze, it doesn't get released as stable until all release critical bugs are fixed. There's no fixed timeline, but on after it take 7 or 8 months after the freeze. Wheezy took 308 days after freeze to get released if I recall correctly.

02:42<jmcnaught>hasan1994: a lot of the big advantages of using Debian come from the way the release cycle works. Software is tested and bugfixed quite a bit before getting included in a Debian Stable release. That means it's not always the most recent version, but it also means the software in Debian Stable generally works pretty well. It looks like Blender 2.67 is only a little over a year old.. it's probably quite capable

02:55<jmcnaught>blumoon|2: i don't know.. sometimes i find bash completion to be smarter than me :) <tab> won't give me what I expect, and eventually I realized it's because I've got the wrong options earlier in the command. This happens for me frequently with "ssh-copy-id" where I can't tab complete the path to my key, and it's always because I forgot the "-i" option.

03:03<jm_>then you should ask in #debian-next, also, you appear to not have package files for libpam-systemd and policykit-1 so you will either have to grab and install those manually or configure networking first (I understand this is why you are trying to install NM)
03:03<jmcnaught>Omniplatypus: you're in the Debian Stable channel, you should be in #debian-next. I need to hit the sack, I hope you get it working. You should probably be using Debian Stable (Wheezy) if you're having this much trouble though.
03:04<Omniplatypus>And about the dependencies, i tried with gnome and then with gnome-core (which is a dependency for gnome) and it gave me the same error with some other dependencies. jm_: I'm going there then, thanks. jmcnaught: i 'm using testing for the exact purpose of it bugging and making me learn.

03:31<twb>Really simple question that has been annoying me for a while. I do something like "apt-get install less RET less foo" -- but the "less foo" gets eaten by apt
03:31<twb>Is there a way to tell apt not to eat stdin unless it actually needs to -- like debconf or something?
03:31<twb>(I realize I could do 'apt-get install foo; foo' as a single command.)
03:32<twb>I know the apt/dpkg stack plays silly buggers with a whole bunch of extra FDs, so I suspect the answer is "you can't have that"
03:32<Stummi>twb, you want to pass an linebreak as argument? Put a \ before it

03:33<twb>No, I want to keep typing commands and have them buffered in stdin rather than apt-get eating them
03:33<twb>e.g. try "sleep 30 RET ls RET" and the ls doesn't get eaten by sleep
03:33<Stummi>this should already happen iirc
03:34<twb>try it
03:34<Stummi>sleep 5 <enter> ls <enter>.. waits 5 seconds and runs ls then
03:34<twb>Right.
03:34<twb>But with apt-get instead of sleep, it DOESN'T work.

23:08<sney>working? no screens found?
23:08<twb>working as in xdm was running -- but the screen was black
23:08<twb>What I've been mostly seeing is that Xorg and xdm exit when they get "no screens found"
23:09<sney>doesn't xdm have some ancient networking ability, and as such will happily run without a local display
23:09<twb>Maybe I just didn't wait long enough for xdm to give up

23:09<twb>Possibly XDMCP but I dunno.
23:09<twb>Anyway I think I just ran "pgrep xdm" too early in that test.

23:11<twb>sed -i 's/^\[..........\].//' will delete the timestamps for easier diffing
23:11<oxez>hm why is there update-alternatives --config editor, and then select-editor ? Shouldn't they be the same?
23:11<twb>So the first difference is "(EE) open /dev/fb0: No such file or directory"
23:12<sney>yeah, I was noticing just now that your working log seems to have a lot of info about fbdev for a system that ostensibly shouldn't be using it
23:12<sney>is fbdev disabled in your inmate kernel?
23:12<twb>oxez: editor is the system-wide default. Not sure about "select-editor", but "sensible-editor" supports per-user default.
23:12<twb>sney: dunno lemme pastebin my .config as well
23:13<twb>http://sprunge.us/LAAf?sh is the awful script that creates it
23:13<oxez>twb: I was wondering, since using "dch" command to update a package, it seemed to select what "select-editor" had configured, instead of "update-alternatives"
23:13<sney>I have to run anyway, good luck fixing this, if you're still around $some-hours later I'll see if I can think of anything else
23:14<twb>sney: Sure thing - or feel free to /msg me anytime since I don't autojoin #debian* channels atm
23:14<twb>sney: thanks for your help so far

23:25<oxez>i looked a the man pages, I was just wondering why I had to configure my editor twice hehe
23:26<twb>oxez: so it looks like dch is running sensible-editor instead of checking $EDITOR first, or something
23:26<twb>Typical behaviour under debian is to try $VISUAL then $EDITOR then sensible-editor (or vi)
