00:06<superwinner>Why does installing Java 7 require installing 123 packages?
00:08<twb>because java is huge?
00:08<twb>You can opt out of Recommends if you know what you're doing
00:08<nevyn>so 123 packages for an operating system seems pretty reasonable.
00:08<twb>nevyn: VM ≠ OS
00:09<nevyn>it does scheduling.
00:09<nevyn>memory management

01:55<ixi>qwk the thing that you want can be accomplished with a vnc server
01:55<qwk>aha
01:55<twb>If you want to view X apps on a Windows system, you must run an X server in Windows.
01:55<twb>Talk to ##windows on Freenode about that.
01:55<ixi>or connect via vnc
01:55<qwk>I was trying to install gdm etc on
01:55<ixi>using vnc client and vnc server
01:55<qwk>the server
01:55<twb>Your other alternative, which is much easier to set up, is VNC.
01:55<jm_>one app that has both ssh and X is mobaxterm, otherwise there's xming X sever etc.
01:56<ixi>look at package tightvncserver
01:56<ixi>it takes some time to configure but documentation is good and examples are plenty
01:56<qwk>yea i have tried it before

08:55<Terje_>Hello, I really like the feature in unity (ubuntu window manager) that allows you to snap your windows to a grid using keyboard shortcuts. I've had all kinds of trouble getting this to work in other window managers having tried python scripts and what have you as it wasn't supported by the window manager itself... Is this simple in debians default window manager?

09:44<blast007>Terje_: depends what your goal is. I think even CD1 has enough for a base install. If you have Internet access you can just download the packages as you need them.

13:56<viccuad>jwhitmore: unfortunately, the raspberry pi arm chip is little-endian while the majority of them are big-endian (or viceversa). all programs need to be compiled expecifically for it, so you cannot use debian arm packages, and that's why Raspbian exists and debian is not supported
13:56<viccuad>they need to compile again all packages. which is a pity
13:57<devogenes>I'd like to run software called Bitwig Studio, which requires GLIBC6 2.14. It seems that stable Debian only supports 2.13. Is it safe to upgrade GLIBC6 from the testing repository or would I need to migrate fully into jessie?

13:59<petn-randall>devogenes: You'd need to fully upgrade to jessie, or run something newer in a VM. Just picking single packages from jessie is not supported and will practically break a lot of things.
14:00<petn-randall>devogenes: Seems as though they only officially support Ubuntu anyway :(
14:00<retrospectacus>especially libc6
14:02<devogenes>Yeah strange about the ubuntu. I talked to their tech support and they simply advised upgrading libc6, they didn't advise that I switch to ubuntu. Seems strange for them to privilege ubuntu.

14:03<devogenes>is jessie relatively stable? for a newbie like me? I'd rather avoid getting into VM and whatnot until I have a firmer grasp on Linux. Unless it's simpler than operating in testing
14:03<sney>it's pretty lumpy right now but can be reliable enough depending on what you're doing
14:04<petn-randall>devogenes: Running a VM with jessie is definitely easier, especially if you're new to Debian.
14:04<viccuad>devogenes: if you have an nvidia gpu, wait, the privative drivers are broken now on testing
14:05<viccuad>unless you use nouveau drivers
14:05<blast007>jwhitmore: the Pi also doesn't have an RTC (or at least not a battery backed one), so the time/data is generally pulled from NTP or set manually each boot

18:07<mtn>joe: you would need to install debian to have pure debian
18:07<devil>well, that hit unstable some days ago
18:07<centrx>joe, Generally the advice is re-install

18:07<ntux>Is that a know issue?
18:07<ntux>known*
18:08<devil>ntux: you need to install xserver-xorg-input-synaptics from unstable, fixed there
18:08<joe>That's what I was afraid of. I've got this install tweaked pretty heavily, and not a real linux pro (far from it actually)
18:09<devil>ntux: simulate first to see what it pulls in

22:59<somiaj>drylelite: I don't know, I didn't see an option commented out for it.
23:00<somiaj>every thing I see seems to say iptables is already logging to a log, but there are examples to configure rsyslog to send it to a seperate file
23:02<drylelite>because i do have iptables configured but i dont see log entries :P
23:03<drylelite>for example
23:03<drylelite>one of the manny lines
23:03<drylelite>/sbin/iptables -t filter -A INPUT -p tcp --tcp-flags ACK,FIN FIN -j LOG --log-prefix "FIN: "
23:04<somiaj>it should be logging in /var/log/messages or dmesg
23:04<somiaj>you don't see any logs there, have you tried to send something to that port/machine you know is being denied so it logs?
23:04<somiaj>looks like there is also a --log-level option, maybe search what level you need to get the logs you want
23:05<somiaj>then rsyslog can be configured to send the logs to another log file if you don't want them in messages
23:05<drylelite>already pinging it and nmaping it
23:05<drylelite>also sendming spam mail
23:05<drylelite>i do have shitloads of stuff in messages
23:05<drylelite>just not from iptables
23:05<drylelite>i remember i did setup one option
23:05<drylelite>and i had shitloads of logs in messgas from iptables but now i dont :P
23:06<somiaj>check your /etc/rsyslog.conf and any files that may be releavent in /etc/rsyslog.conf.d/
