00:35<uso>sney: dhcp is only used for IPv4 and ifdown / ifup does not bring the IPv6 address back
00:36<sney>there is dhcp6 but it tends to be enterprise specific. with no information about your environment, just threw that in there
00:37<sney>ifdown/ifup should, though. bringing the interface up should just cause it to re-autoconfig from the router advertisements or whatever else you're doing. you can try taking it down directly with ifconfig too

01:03<uso>sadly with all the complicated auto-config mechanisms linux more and more gets like windows, you have to reboot to fix even the simplest problems :/
01:03<uso>after reboot the IP is back ...
01:03<sney>auto-config is ipv6's problem, not linux's.
01:04<sney>they wanted to make it more plug and play. that'll get easy after a decade or so of router firmware, probably. it's already ok in the enterprise space
01:04<uso>the implementation is on linux ;)
01:04<sney>ok if you wanna insist on blaming the thing that didn't cause the problem you're having then just go ahead, have fun etc
01:04*sney shrug
01:06<uso>the router still did distribute IP addresses to other computers and I had to reboot linux, not the router
01:08<uso>still curious if there is any other way between ifdown/ifup and reboot to fix such a problem

02:10<LordBrain>Can someone help me troubleshoot?

02:14-!-aranax [~aranax@] has quit []
02:20<babilen>LordBrain: I'd recommend using IBus based input methods, rather than scim (in particular for CJK). You will also have to set XMODIFIERS, GTK_IM_MODULE and QT_IM_MODULE for which you can use im-config for that.

02:23-!-gour [] has left #debian []
02:24<babilen>LordBrain: Hanglus definitely, no idea about Tamil
02:24<LordBrain>Okay, well, anything really, but i need a howto or something, what package do i install first off?
02:24<babilen>Either way, you'll have to set XMODIFIERS, GTK_IM_MODULE and QT_IM_MODULE regardless of ibus/scim
02:25-!-hiva [~hiva@] has joined #debian
02:25<babilen>And if you are running a reasonably recent Debian version you are probably using IBus already to manage your keyboard settings.
02:25<LordBrain>I am using mate, which is basically gnome 2, and there is a menu option: System -> Preferences -> Scim Input Method
02:26<LordBrain>I am a bit frustrated that that is there, and yet does not set everything up
02:26<LordBrain>its Debian Stable, with backports, and a mate repo added
02:27<babilen>We don't support those repositories, but I'd be surprised if it behaves differently (but who knows what they've done, they are essentially running of an old codebase)
02:27<LordBrain>well, i doubt the problem comes from running mate
02:28<jmcnaught>LordBrain: mate is in wheezy-backports, it's the third-party repo that's not supported
02:28-!-melmothX [] has joined #debian
02:29<LordBrain>they do break stuff up some, changing names of programs such as gnome-settings-daemon becoming mate-settings-daemon.. weirdness like that

02:29<LordBrain>Well, whatever, i could run any xwindow manager, i don't think thats the issue here. So forget about it
02:30<babilen>We still don't support their third-party repositories. But I *still* don't believe that it makes a difference in regard to the input method setup. It *does* make a difference regarding my statement about IBus though.
02:30<LordBrain>what statement about IBus was that?
02:30<LordBrain>Oh about whether i have it running already
02:30<babilen>"And if you are running a reasonably recent Debian version you are probably using IBus already to manage your keyboard settings."
02:31<LordBrain>I probably don't, so what packages do i install?
02:31<babilen>I am happily using IBus for 日本語 and 中文 .. Don't speak Korean nor Tamil so I don't have a need for that.
02:32-!-Saxman [] has joined #debian
02:32<LordBrain>Well, i want to be able to try a lot of different things, because i am trying to invent an alternative writing system for lojban here.
02:33<babilen>You want im-config to beging with and then you install whatever input method you want to use. Set the modifiers in your bash startup and (e.g. "XMODIFIERS=@im=ibus" for ibus (I guess =scim for scim))
02:33<LordBrain>hangul seems intriguing, because it looks ideographic like hanzi but is actually phonetic, and that might be a good fit

02:34<babilen>LordBrain: /usr/share/doc/ibus/README.Debian is a good read for IBus, I would expect scim to come with something similar, but then I haven't used scim ever since maybe 2006
02:35<LordBrain>ok, well, I guess it might just be that i need to set those environment variables, I was kind of hoping the gui config would just do the right thing.
02:35<babilen>im-config you mean?
02:35<LordBrain>no, it is some scim specfic gui
02:35-!-pdo_fn14 [~pdo_fn14@] has joined #debian
02:36<babilen>That is for configuring scim itself, not to configure the system to use it
02:36<LordBrain>i did read docs about setting environment variables, but there were lots of different options about where to actually set them
02:36<LordBrain>as in, do i put it in ~/.profile, or .xinitrc or /etc/profile, etc etc...

02:59<LordBrain>Cool. :)
03:00<LordBrain>That's Tamil script
03:00<babilen>LordBrain: I would recommend ibus-mozc for Japanese and ibus-pinyin (or ibus-cangjie if you know BoPoMoFo) for Chinese
03:00<LordBrain>I've no idea how to pronounce it yet, but its a cool looking writing system
03:00<babilen>s/BoPoMoFo/Zhuyin ;)
03:01<LordBrain>There are three options for tamil, Inscript, Remington, Phonetic
03:02<LordBrain>I notice a lot of the languages have Inscript and Phonetic as options

03:05<babilen>That would be my guess too, but I still don't know much about Tamil and its input methods.

03:07<LordBrain>well, okay, i may do that, but for now, let me figure out what i have
03:07<babilen>Right-click → Preferences
03:08<babilen>It might be that you are using scim right now and that restarting + setting those three env vars did the trick (what did you set them to?)
03:08<LordBrain>I have that preferences dialog open
03:09<LordBrain>export GTK_IM_MODULE=ibus
03:09<LordBrain>export XMODIFIERS=@im=ibus
03:09<LordBrain>I did that, and yet, i did get some kidn of scim related menu in xchat for a bit, although it is gone now

03:11<LordBrain>ஓஹ்இ Oh I found it.
03:11<LordBrain>somehow installing IBus facilitated me using Scim
03:11<LordBrain>i guess IBus is aware of Scim?

12:26<centrx>eightyeight, I don't know, you may want to look for a Linux Security related channel rather than a Debian channel
12:26<centrx>eightyeight, At first glance, the manpage implies rngd does not support multiple devices
12:26<centrx>eightyeight, So if I wanted to do it in a pinch, I would set up multiple devices, that are xor'ed in succession

12:26<eightyeight>i thought i might be able to add multiple '-r <device>' switches, but it appears that it only takes the latest
12:27<eightyeight>centrx: yeah. i'm thinking a named pipe, that might be doing something like that
12:27<centrx>eightyeight, then rngd only looks at the last one. You can look at the Linux kernel source code to see how it combines multiple sources

22:06<supaplex_>ffs bad irssi!
22:06<supaplex_>dpkg: jmcnaught++
22:10<supaplex_>I have a 64gb usb stick with BD-1 already on it. I have a older (6mo or so) mirror of BD-1,BD-2 packages on another system. would be nice to re-roll one usb stick for all amd64 content including a psuedo drop to allow its public_html to be my local mirror of all my VM's (eventually I'll crack at that).

23:07<anomie>Is there any supported version of ffmpeg (not libav) for Debian?
23:07-!-anomie is now known as Guest3325
23:09<centrx>no, you have to download ffmpeg from elsewhere
23:09-!-trickyhero [] has left #debian [Leaving]
23:10<Guest3325>Do you have the announcement of it's deprecation handy? I'm curious of the rationale.
23:12<centrx>libav is a fork of ffmpeg
23:13<centrx>There was a big hoo-ha-ha about it a few years ago
23:13-!-Explorer91 [~junghan@] has joined #debian
23:13<centrx>"ffmpeg" is a fake cover for libav
23:13<centrx>on Debian
23:13<Guest3325>I know.
23:13<centrx>so one of the two was chosen
23:13<Guest3325>But why are Debian and Ubuntu and who-knows-who taking sides over this, and how do they decide?
23:13<centrx>and the libav people were more involved with Debian
23:14<centrx>The people who do the work decide in the first instance
23:15<centrx>I think ffmpeg is clearly a better choice
23:15<Guest3325>Still, seems kind of... childish, for lack of a better word.
23:15<centrx>At the time of the fork, it was not so clear
23:15*Guest3325 nods
23:16<centrx>It's a case of a dedicated and productive but surly BDFL who was forked

23:54<devogenes>Hello. I've got a question. Whenever I attempt to open the root terminal, I get a loading cursor but nothing ever happens. I don't know how to access the root terminal other than by clicking the icon. Any ideas?

23:54<supaplex_>yeah. it's working splendid now. :)
