01:07<ama2>thanks themill
01:08<ama2>for some reason, synaptic displays a whole lot more suggests than "apt-cache show packagename" does for the package 'audacity'
01:09<ama2>not near as many as the huge recursive all-suggests returns, but synaptic displays about a dozen, "apt-cache" displays one

09:57<babilen>Packages in backports are packages from the current testing branch that have been recompiled against the libraries/package ecosystem in the stable release. It is a way to install *a few selected* newer packages on stable without the need to unnecessarily pull in newer versions of other packages if that is not strictly necessary.
09:58<babilen>vrkalak: "stable" simply means "not changing" in the context of Debian and has very little to do with "working" or "bug free"

19:26<FatHorse>Hey, uh one quick question. I am learning to handle debian in a server environment guided by an (old) book. The book is based on debian 4.0 etch. I am planning on using etch on a virtual machine. Any thoughts/hints/advice why this is a good/bad/ok idea?
19:27<FatHorse>by virtual machine I mean one I set up on my destop for testing purposes and I appreciate any advice if I should go with a different version or if it is ok to stick with etch.

23:48<LtL>giantsmall: browse a mirror's sid debs that you'll need, use gdebi to install them. and no i dont know all the debs you'll need
23:49<LtL>giantsmall: either that or wait until it gets into backports

23:54<LtL>giantsmall: btw - you'll need to download the debs, not use apt-get or friends.
23:57<giantsmall>LtL: how long until it gets into backports do u think?
23:58<LtL>giantsmall: i have no idea, i doubt anyone does.
