03:56<hell>themill: easy, which of hundreds packages forces install of another pkg. Without guessing and running apt-cache show for every suspicious pkg
03:57<musca>,why policykit-1 systemd-sysv
03:57<weasel>systemd exhibits several very annoying bugs here. in particular, booting now takes several minutes more than previously.
03:57<judd>No dependency chain found between packages policykit-1 and systemd-sysv in wheezy/i386.
03:58<musca>hell: in the right channel the bot defaults to the right release ...
04:00<hell>musca: my question is not about systemd, actually. And policykit depends on libpam-systemd, which depends on systemd-sysv|systemd-shim, and i have systemd-shim installed.

11:43<An_Laoch>I wanted to do some work with 802.1ad VLAN tagging. I compiled a kernel 3.15.8 (i.e. greater than 2.10 which I believed has support for 802.1ad) however the command "ip link add link eth0 name eth0.10 type vlan proto 802.1ad id 10" fails with a message "vlan: what is 'proto'?"

11:43<Brigo>zartoosh, you have to pin it, so it cannot be deleted.
11:44<babilen>zartoosh: Why is that?
11:44<Brigo>zartoosh, but kernel upgrades usually do not removes all ones. You should have both after upgrade.

11:45<zartoosh>babilen, I am trying to avoid grub-mkconfig to create another menu entry in the /boot/grub/grub.cfg for our embedded environment. This causes some of our own home made drivers not to work with newer kernel.

11:47<An_Laoch>babilen, the kernel on the Debian vanilla install is 3.2.0-4-686-pae so I downloaded the latest stable one from kernel.org. What version do you suggest ??
11:47<babilen>zartoosh: So you are essentially not using Debian, but some local fork of it? Either way, if you don't want it putting it on hold or, if you like the painful route, pinning it manually is the way to go about this.

22:57<NightMonkey>Hi there. I'd like to rollback a host's package set to what it was before I issued an "apt-get install". What's the best way to do this?
22:57<abrotman>restore from backup?
22:58<NightMonkey>I could cobble together the package list from /var/log/apt/history.log, but I was hoping there's an 'automated' way.
22:58<NightMonkey>abrotman: It's not an "emergency", more that I no longer need the application I installed, so I want to remove it, and the deps it pulled in.
22:59<abrotman>NightMonkey: so just remove them ..
23:00<abrotman>NightMonkey: aptitude purge "application"
23:01<NightMonkey>abrotman: Oh, it's that easy?!? OK, I'll try it.

23:19<manuel>Installed debian an hour or so ago and I continue having a problem with my monitor. After X time, the screen shuts off. I've looked around google for some answers but nothing really seems to help
23:23<NightMonkey>abrotman: Thanks!
23:25<manuel>I mark down the IP before the screen goes down and then I try to ssh into the computer after. It responds with "no route to host"
23:32<manuel>correction, I can connect to it but I tried issuing a shutdown command and it looked like it went through but the desktop stayed active

23:38<LtL>manuel: type: shutdown -r now ; to reboot, substitute -h to shutdown cold
23:39<manuel>I was doing it without -r
23:39-!-Rcart [~rcart@190.92.27.78] has joined #debian
23:40<LtL>manuel: you need the word 'now' also, or a specific time to shutdown

23:41<manuel>LtL, I was using "sudo shutdown now"
23:41<LtL>manuel: you need -r or -h
23:41<manuel>LtL, alright, didn't know about that. Any clue for the monitor shutting down?
23:42<manuel>It's been fine for a little more than I expected this reboot but it might be shutting off soon
23:42<LtL>manuel: you should find that in power management from your desktop
23:42<manuel>Do you think that would disable the internet connection?
23:43<LtL>manuel: strange that it doesn't wake-up though
23:43<manuel>LtL, I had the computer connected to a ts server (the monitors just went off) and the client dropped from the server
23:44<manuel>LtL, so it's not the monitor's that are only shutting off, it seems that the whole computer is going to sleep I guess
23:44<LtL>manuel: setting the monitor sleep time will not interrupt networking
23:44<manuel>LtL, but up until that point, I'm actively using it
23:44<manuel>LtL, so I feel like there shouldn't be a reason for it shutoff like that
23:44<LtL>manuel: that should be in power management also.
23:45-!-Rcart [~rcart@190.92.27.78] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
23:45<manuel>LtL, the -h/-r worked and this time it did shut down btw
23:48<manuel>LtL, In the power setting in System Settings, it shows "suspend when inactive for [Don't Suspend]"
23:48<manuel>Unless there's a more obscure power management panel somewhere
23:49<LtL>manuel: i'm not on wheezy so i couldn't say
