00:48<jmcnaught>mpourhadi: https://wiki.debian.org/Schroot that will get you started, but you should also look at the documentation that comes with the schroot packages. And maybe also the debootstrap man page if you run into trouble

05:27<SynrGy>that's the essence of stable. updating to a new version introduces new bugs
05:28<babilen>dpkg: stable
05:28<dpkg>[stable] The status of a Debian release when no packages will be added, new versions introduced and changes will only fix security issues and critical bugs. Packages can be removed in rare circumstances. The current stable version of Debian is Wheezy (7.6); ask me about <releases>. Security bugs are fixed in stable by backporting the fix to the stable version (ask me about <security backports>). https://wiki.debian.org/DebianStable
05:28<babilen>jamesaxl: stable simply means "not changing" and has nothing to do with "bug free" or "working" in the context of Debian

05:33<SynrGy>hm, yes, but what i meant by 'introduces new bugs' is the rationale for keeping things 'not changing' is that once you've eliminated the release critical bugs from software, and so long as you backport security fixes, changing to a new version means trading your known, proven version for an unknown, unproven one
05:33<SynrGy>so there is inherent value in stability in this sense
05:34<SynrGy>babilen: the factoid does a good job at saying what stable is. just not why. :p

15:31<babilen>dpkg: restart networking
15:31<dpkg>From Debian 6.0 "Squeeze" onwards, the use of the networking init script to reload networking configuration («/etc/init.d/networking restart») is discouraged. Instead, perform the actions you really want. Re-apply changes from /etc/network/interfaces: ifdown eth0; ifup eth0. Remove all iptables rules: iptables -F. See also <mdblows>.

15:31<dpkg>The deprecated message essentially tries to inform you in a very, well, suboptimal way that all interfaces that are deactivated with "ifdown -a" might not be reactivated again when "ifup -a" is run.

19:29<beren>So it is required to modify the /etc/network/interfaces file?
19:29<babilen>beren: You can use network-manager-gnome's nm-applet just fine with awesome and system connections ("available to all users") should work with plain network-manager. Never tried the KDE applets, but they might work fine too. So, best install those explicitly. You probbaly have the packages in your cache still and could just install them right away
19:30<babilen>beren: A "apt-get install network-manager" might be all you need

23:23<oldlaptop>code:blocks, kdevelop, qtcreator, eclipse, on and on and on

23:25<jest>oldlaptop, ok, so there is no specific version that is native to debian?
23:25<lostson>jest: no not specific there are many and you can use any of them
23:25<pabs>all of the ones oldlaptop mentioned are native to Debian
23:26<jest>k, thx much
23:26<oldlaptop>and there are more I didn't mention, look through the packages
23:26<pabs>although codeblocks is in a pretty bad state in Debian right now, maintainer needs help
23:27<oldlaptop>clearly kdevelop is superior to all others!
23:27*pabs likes nano
23:27<oldlaptop>(who says there's a difference between my opinion and objective fact?!)
23:27<jest>and all we need to program on a debian box is an IDE right? the compiler (gcc) comes pre-iinstalled?
23:27<lostson>oldlaptop: we all know your opionions are actual facts
23:28-!-garrison [~smuxi@ResNet-10-42.resnet.ucsb.edu] has joined #debian
23:28<oldlaptop>jest: No, actually
23:28<oldlaptop>it's trivial to install though (see the build-essential metapackage), and IDEs should drag it in with them as well
23:28<oldlaptop>(i.e. it will all get set up for you one way or another)
23:29<jest>oldlaptop, ok, so i dont need to look for two different versions? like with codeblocks there is the regular version without the compiler, and the mingw version with the compiler
23:29<jest>would other IDE's call the compiler version mingw as well?
23:29<oldlaptop>so long as you get it from debian, gcc should come along :P
23:30<jest>ok, thx much
23:30<oldlaptop>For debian, it will *not* be called mingw
23:30<oldlaptop>that's a windows compiler, always
23:30<jest>ah ok
23:30<oldlaptop>minimal GNU on windows
23:30<oldlaptop>there is actually 'mingw' in Debian though
23:30<oldlaptop>it's a cross-compiler, for building windows EXEs from debian
23:30<jest>what is it called in debian?
23:30-!-sakax [~skx@sakax.user.oftc.net] has joined #debian
23:30<oldlaptop>simply gcc
23:31<jest>ah, got it
23:31<oldlaptop>although I believe 'gcc' will pull in only gcc the C compiler
23:31<oldlaptop>not necessarily g++ the C++ compiler, gcj the Java compiler, etc etc etc
23:31<pabs>gcc generally isn't installed unless you install it though
23:32<oldlaptop>if you want a nice full-featured build toolchain, install build-essential
23:32<oldlaptop>that's what it's for :)
23:32<oldlaptop>IDEs will all depend (maybe recommend) build-essential anyhow
23:32<oldlaptop>*depend on

23:35<oldlaptop>jest: compilers, linkers, development libraries...
23:36<oldlaptop>all the stuff you need to compile things, in short
23:36<jest>ok, is there a wiki on the build-essential thing that youre referring to?
23:36<oldlaptop>There isn't much to write about it
23:37<oldlaptop>just 'aptitude install build-essential' :P
23:37<oldlaptop>dpkg: tell jest about build-essential
23:37<oldlaptop>It's what is called a metapackage - an otherwise normal Debian package which doesn't actually include anything on its own
23:38<oldlaptop>it simply depends on a number of other packages (in this case, all you need to compile things...)
23:38<jest>oldlaptop, ok, and is build-essential only for programming in C? or does it pull in essential files for other languages as well?
23:39<oldlaptop>It should get a C++ compiler as well; honestly don't know offhand if it drags in other stuff

23:44<oldlaptop>python probably is on the system already
23:44<oldlaptop>same for perl
23:45<jest>yeah, my system came with 2.6 and 2.7 for python, are those the most up to date versions?
23:45<oldlaptop>it's not that simple :)
23:45<jest>whats the full explanation?
23:46<oldlaptop>python2 and python3 are mutually incompatible as languages for various reasons
23:46<oldlaptop>python 2.7 is the current version of python2 (which is nonetheless deprecated upstream, python3 is the future)

23:47<oldlaptop>it is
23:47<jest>sry, darn keyboard
23:47<jest>why wont i have that problem with c++?
23:47<oldlaptop>because there aren't mutually incompatible variants of C/C++ (generally speaking)

23:48<jest>so what was the motivation to make a version of python that was incompatable with previous versions?
23:48<oldlaptop>there's an explanation of that on python.org
23:48<jest>and is there a python2/python3 translator?
23:48<oldlaptop>there is (see python.org)
23:48<jest>k
23:48<jest>sry about the 1000 quesitons
23:49<oldlaptop>There *are* different versions of the C and C++ languages, but the same compiler can easily support all of them
23:50<oldlaptop>and in any case there's no fundamental breaks like python2->python3
23:51<oldlaptop>unless you consider the difference between C and C++ to be such a break :)

23:52<jest>ok, one other question, is there a more 'useful' language to learn where you are new to programming? i have looked at many of them, i had started with C but someone told me that for a beginner there was no reason to learn C, go with C++, but ive also heard that python is good and useful
23:52<jest>so im just not sure where to try and get a start, or if it really matters
