06:11<jens_>Good afternoon. I've installed Debian Wheezy with the Trinity desktop yesterday, but haven't been able to connect to a wireless network. I've installed the non-free driver (broadcom-sta-dkms) which the card needs + firmware-linux-nonfree. The card is detected by both NM and wicd, it can find wireless networks but refuses to connect to them. What could be the problem?

06:17<SynrG>"by both NM and wicd" sounds suspicious. got both installed at once? i know having one installed and not removing it and installing the other can frig things up. also, i know of some historical issues with NM on KDE (issues no longer present in wheezy ...)
06:17<SynrG>so in short, you have an unsupportable configuration (at least here) where it will be hard for us to sort out what could be a debian issue and what could be a trinity issue.

06:19<SynrG>jens_: we can't tell if your issues are trinity-specific or debian-specific. sorry. there were a number of historical issues with KDE's NM
06:19<jens_>I've used wicd-gtk too, same issue
06:19<SynrG>did you purge NM?
06:19<jens_>Yes
06:20<SynrG>i don't know. i'm not a big fan of wicd. i know it falls down in some places where NM works fine
06:20<SynrG>NM as provided by *debian*, that is
06:20<SynrG>i have no idea what trinity's network-manager-kde (or whatever they call it) does
06:21<jens_>The strange thing is, that in GNOME / KDE4 / Xfce, it works just fine
06:21<SynrG>more evidence it's a trinity-specific issue.
06:21<jens_>They said it probably was kernel/firmware related
06:21<xiqy>If it works in a different DE it's obviously not the kernel.

11:38<schichtleiter>Hello, I plan to install wheezy with mdadm raid5+lvm, and i was wondering what the best option for a boot partition is. On an earlier installation, i had a seperate raid1 for boot... but newest grub supports boot from lvm i think? The disks are 4tb so gpt is a must. Is it possible/recommended to boot via EFI? TIA

11:55<trico>really....? why?
11:56<LtL>trico: jessie is 'testing' the jessie installer is 'testing' also, wheezy is not 'testing installer.'
11:57<LtL>install wheezy, then a simple update, upgrade, dist-upgrade is safer
11:58<schichtleiter>is booting from efi still a pita?
11:59<trico>interesting... i already have the iso so im going to try it anyway. my upgrade from squeeze to wheezy when wheezy was stable didnt go well, so i dont feel like trying soemthing like that again

16:34<dotut>hello is there a C api I can use to compare versions of deb pkg? currently using strverscmp which doesn't handle certain deb version strings correctly
16:34<jla>I think it is also interesting that this package lists an architecture in apt-cache show, but not in dpkg-query: http://paste.debian.net/116597/
16:34<valdyn>dotut: dpkg is a c program, use cut & paste ?
16:35<jla>dotut if you can find what dpkg --compare-versions does, sure

17:32<MixG>I have just finished installing debian 7.5, and two things happened, first I didn't have an Internet connection during the installtion process, so I used a big dvd image, and now my desktop doesn't have a mirror to download updates from, how can I adda mirror?
17:34<LtL>MixG: just edit your /etc/apt/sources.list
17:34<MixG>and the second thing was that I am not confident if the installation proccess installed the non free realtek firmware for my network card, but I think it might have so consider it resolved
17:34<MixG>LtL: just that, and then run 'apt-get update" right?
17:35<LtL>MixG: if you didn't use the non-free image you'll need to fetch it

21:21<greeneggsnslamm>I've got an alienware m14x that I've been trying to install with debian from a USB drive. I got the harddrive partitioned and encrypted, and the install went smoothly. When I went to perform the intial boot, the computer would shortly timeout after entering the passphrase. The message the pc gets hung up on is " azx_get_response timeout, switching to single_cmd". Sometimes after the message,
21:21<greeneggsnslamm>the pc will carry out some more operations for a few seconds and conclude with a "rebooting in 30 seconds" message, to which the reboot never occurs. From what I've infferred thus far it could have something to do with the sound card driver, but that's just a weak infference. Its been a frustrating troubleshoot without having my workhorse computer up and runnng.
