10:58<somiaj>sounds like you need to recreate the initial ram disk now that it is being botted in Xen, but I'm unsure the best way to do this.
10:58<tony77>GRUB loads perfectly... which I finally get done.
10:59<tony77>somiaj, okay what I do for that is to boot with the Lubuntu disk and then do chroot /mnt/disk then update initramfs -c -k '2.6.etc'
10:59<somiaj>yea looks like you are missing or have something wrong with your initram disk, I'm a bit out of my experience here, but you can chroot back into it and recrate it. I am unsure what sort of flags you need to use (I have never had to do this myself)

11:36<faheem_>Yes, there are some inconsistencies there.
11:37<faheem_>But you notice that is only says -4 migrated to testing, nothing more recent.
11:38<faheem_>I think this is a web page screwup.
11:38<dxld>Well yeah if the testing migration was there I wouldn't be so supprised, maybe the builders just haven't come around to building the binary packages yet
11:38<faheem_>The actual source that is downloaded is -4.
11:38<dxld>but since the migration isn't listed it's weird
11:38<faheem_>Try for yourself
11:38<dxld>apt-cache showsrc gcc-4.9 gives me -8 too
11:38<faheem_>apt-get source gcc-4.9/testing

22:18<sney>you can fit a lot in 4 GB
22:18<SamB>how do I specify a solution that involves adding one package and removing another?
22:18<TJ>I know. I didn't make the image or slim it down.
22:18<TJ>I am just working with what they give me.
22:19<sney>well if the module is showing up as not existing, it might be a custom kernel too
22:20<TJ>I believe it is
22:20<sney>since ip_tables.ko is shipped with the main linux-image package on (at least x86) debian systems
22:20<sney>well, your only option at that point is to build a kernel for it. do you have another debian system with some extra disk space that's the same cpu architecture as your embedded machine?
22:21<sney>er, or you could install the actual debian kernel package
22:21<TJ>not with the same cpu.
22:21<TJ>not an option.
22:21<TJ>I do have a debian machine running a different architecture. I tried rebuilding once on it but that failed

22:23<TJ>no it's a technologic systems ts 7400 v2

22:25<TJ>no. it is what they have running on the board
22:25<TJ>it's customized and what I have to work with.
22:25<sney>>_<
22:25<TJ>yeah
22:26<sney>I'd say step 1 is to yell at your vendor until they either produce ip_tables.ko for you to install or refuse, since they (probably) have the build infrastructure for it

22:40<sney>huh, I've never seen that one personally. but it does sound annoying. I guess if you were far enough back that apt couldn't understand xz
22:40<hwgasdfasdf>and all of this started with a cups problem :( Man I really REALLY hate cups now - every time I touch it it breaks, and it takes me forever to fix it
22:40<sney>yes, printing is terrible
22:40<hwgasdfasdf>it wasn't that long ago that cups worked so well, and automatically too
22:41<sney>meh, it goes up and down depending on your printer etc
22:41<hwgasdfasdf>setup all your printers on one box, and they'd just magically show up on every other box without touching anything - it's been years since that's worked right
22:41<hwgasdfasdf>and hence years since I've upgraded this box!
22:43<hwgasdfasdf>oh, and the problem with dpkg is some rule changed about allowed characters in something (dependency list I think), so it'll go to install a new package (usually lots of problems with perl packages) that has some not allowed character in the version string of some dependency, and then it all comes to a grinding halt until you manually upgrade dpkg

22:48<themill>Sounds like you need to work better at keeping your machines up to date. All these things are problems because you are ending up with wildly out-of-date packages and trying to do dist-upgrades from ancient to modern in ways that are not supported and never tested.
22:48<themill>In fact, we *know* that they cannot work.
22:48<hwgasdfasdf>yeah, but when you have too many boxes, it's hard to keep them all up to date
