01:37<tidux>how do I blow out all traces of Xfce as installed via tasksel in Jessie?
01:38<tidux>the installer is a piece of shit and installed Xfce when I wanted a different DE

01:43<mberends>deborphan (or its included orphaner menu tool) should help you a lot after you remove the main xfce package. Most people don't think the installer is a piece of shit for such a reason.
01:43<tidux>I explicitly requested GNOME and got Xfce instead

01:45<tidux>OK, looks like "aptitude purge task-desktop task-desktop-xfce xfce4" is ripping out most of it

15:01<petn-randall>hi Gryfus
15:02<Gryfus>i have a question, i added my debian server as a "network" place in windows8.1 and when i`m trying to connect there is popping login window, after typing a proper login and password, there is a "connection refused"
15:03<Gryfus>what config should i edit and look for what? i added 192.168.0.12, not a ftp:// or anything else. So? what can cause blocking and refusing?
15:03<stvnz>hello #debian i just installed the backported kernels on wheezy but i lost sound of my realtek fw... how can i get it back ?

15:04<petn-randall>Gryfus: What is a "network" place? That doesn't explain the network protocol.
15:05<Gryfus>network location*
15:05<petn-randall>Gryfus: Ok, what is a network place?
15:05<stvnz>samba server ?
15:06*petn-randall knows close to nothing about windows machines.

15:06<mtn>stvnz: you should have the option to boot the old kernel, too, in your boot menu. may have to look under "Other options"
15:06<Gryfus>aww

15:07<stvnz>and would like to have sound
15:07<mtn>stvnz: have you gone through your sound settings? look at pavucontrol and alsamixer
15:07<stvnz>well it sees the audio card but no sound comming tru
15:08<mtn>stvnz: check all the settings in both of the things I mentioned.

19:20<devil>-v
19:21<calisto_>I think, the best Linux is a mix across distros - but doing it "the right way". Means -- before adding a repo permanently you should check if it's not better to just chose a .deb package or query the single package from a repo :P
19:21<calisto_>Ubuntu has disadvantages
19:21<calisto_>Debian has more than just disadvantages
19:21<jmcnaught>calisto_: you're lucky (or like spending a lot of time on managing software) if using repos from all those different distros is working for you. The packages made by each distro for their repos aren't intended to be compatible with others. Also Ubuntu in any percentage is not supported here, only pure Debian is
19:21<calisto_>And Mint is kind of a Linux for mobile devices -- noobish. No problems :P
19:22<calisto_>jmcnaught: I know. That's why i'm not looking for support for Ubuntu here... But a little off-topic talk is allowed, isn't it?
19:22<cinch>calisto_, if it's just a couple of packages, should be no problem, but expect some major dependancy headaches on upgrading otherwise
19:22<jmcnaught>calisto_: not really, there's #debian-offtopic for that
19:22<calisto_>ah ok
19:23<calisto_>But i'll still stay here. Because i can sometimes need this channel when it comes to problems with debian tools like "APT-GET" or "DPKG"

19:27<SynrGy>calisto_: we don't obstruct you from using those proprietary packages, so I don't know what you mean by your "But ..." statement above.
19:27<TJ>also, you can get proprietary packages on your debian machine
19:27<TJ>you need to add the sources, but there is no reason you can't install them
19:27<jmcnaught>calisto_: Debian has proprietary firmware and drivers, they're just in a separate "non-free" repository that needs to be added by the user

19:28<SynrGy>as for "Debian is GNU", no, it is not. the FSF and Debian have different, and not always compatible goals
19:29<TJ>Never have to worry about all the extra fluff having problems with debian and if you start here you stand to learn much more since you have a fairly blank slate on which you can build and learn as you desire.
19:30<calisto_>TJ
19:30<calisto_>i agree
19:30<calisto_>Debian is a great OS if you wanna learn more about the kernel and the technology inside your devices

23:50<nyov>I have a curious issue with apt. It says a certain GPG key is expired. When I check with 'apt-key list', the key for that archive [expires: 2016-08-28], which is 2 days ago, 2 years in the future.
23:50<nyov>coincidence? it must be. Is it possible the key had sub-keys, which expired and are then no longer listed by GPG?
23:51<nyov>my system clock is alright, btw. :D
23:51<supaplex_>Are you watching Dr Who on that PC? Maybe there's too much timeywimeywibblywobbly going on.
