02:53<pudor>hi all! i have [off]dream[/off] problem:-)
02:54<pudor>skype and debian working together
02:54<pudor>sorry for my english
02:54<devil>pudor: MS makesus use the lattest version
02:54<devil>older versions do not work anymore
02:54<pudor>i know
02:55<devil>for latest you need pulsaudio
02:55<devil>well, then ask your real question
02:55<pudor>but drivers for sound and webcam all poor
02:55<pudor>are instead of all
02:56<pudor>freezening, "no device" for sound and all that
02:56<pudor>in the middle of conversation
02:56<devil>pudor: well, I had the same thing here.
02:56<devil>throw skype as far as you can and use google hangouts or a sip app for that
02:56<pudor>so microsoft windows is only choice for skype?
02:57<devil>skype is utter crap, the more so with the latest version
02:57<pudor>say it my oldies:-)
02:58<devil>google hangouts is easy
02:58<devil>of course there isa other solutions with more privacy
02:59<pudor>advertise it not only here and "one day...":-)

05:31<babilen>himanshu: Unless your computer is twenty years old it probably would work, yeah. But then the architecture of the system installed on the system doesn't really matter to a live CD unless you want to chroot into it.
05:31<heaumer`>i386 is the "original" x86, 8086, circa 1986 to mid 90
05:32<heaumer`>686 is 1995

05:44<heaumer`>hum, which url is this? this seems unlikely for chroot to be needed here :)
05:44<himanshu>okay thanks :)
05:44<heaumer`>chroot stands for change-root, that is, to change the root partition
05:45<heaumer`>for instance, suppose you have two linux installed on the same hard disk and you booted the first one
05:45<heaumer`>suppose the second one is mounted on /mnt/linux2
05:45<himanshu>ok,I hope to make more acquaintance with Debian stuff
05:45<heaumer`>you may issue a 'chroot /mnt/linux2' to start on shell "on the second linux"
05:45<himanshu>I see
05:46<heaumer`>this is very poor and limited virtualisation (i think it's posix, so works on every unix)
05:46<himanshu>would you suggest me some good reading material on Debian?I can always google though..

05:52<wompa>himanshu, if you have a pretty fast computer maybe virtualisation would be better
05:53<heaumer`>it's more slackware-centered, but as slackware adds only a very thin layer, most of this stuff can be re-used for other unixes

07:39<somiaj>Apollo: mixing stable with testing or unstable is a bad idea
07:40<somiaj>Apollo: when testing is not frozen (the freeze is gonna happen nov 5th) unstable and testing are close (as in packages migrate into testing either after 5 or 10 days). So most the depends are satisified by unstable packages in testing and can be installed with little issue.
07:40<somiaj>Apollo: you do loose out on valuable bug reports if something goes wrong, and once testing freezes it becomes a bad idea to mix.

12:41<Krim>okay this is possible, but single user mode doesn't boot up X
12:41<faheem_>you could also look and see if an x log was generated
12:42<faheem_>Krim: no, i mean if you can get a live cd to run X on the machine, you can leverage that
12:42-!-Nazcafan [] has joined #debian
12:44<Krim>yea, but (despite the fact that i don't think a livecd works :P) i want to use debian, and it's not running directly after a fresh install when i try to boot up in rescue single user mode, so X is not loaded. So the problem must be anywhere else, and i don't have a clue, why it even destroys the working frame buffer (i can see the boot up frame buffer output until a lot of hex codes show up)
12:44<Krim>so maybe it's a debian bug.
12:44<faheem_>Krim: maybe
12:45<faheem_>try a different distribution?
12:45<Krim>ofc i could use ubuntu (which worked well before) but i want debian to work on this machine ;)
12:45<Krim>and this is a intel atom reference board, so many many many users are using this setup
12:46<faheem_>Krim: if you can get something similar to work, you can use it to try to isolate the problem
12:47<Krim>thats my problem: I've no idea where to start because normally in single user mode there shouldn't be any changes to the frame buffer.
12:48<Krim>so it must be a kernel module or a bug directly in the kernel, or are there any other positiblities?
12:48<faheem_>Krim: what are you trying to use. Debian stable/testing/unstable? what kernel?
12:48<Krim>stable, latest.
12:48<faheem_>Krim: ah, ok, try an unstable or testing build then
12:49<Krim>tried testing before, same effect.
12:49<Krim>and unstable is no option :( want to use the system for productive usage.
12:50-!-n4v3 [] has joined #debian

12:51<Krim>hm i'll try an unstable installation. but i think that the maintainer of the debian package has to fix this afap. minimal installation on a reference board should never result in an unusable system

22:09<pfsense_rookie>qwk, ok, I believe I am overlooking a few things that I am not also being told about. What is the purpose of this new user if you don't mind the question?

22:14<pfsense_rookie>qwk, so I believe jcnaught is suggesting to copy .bashrc from /etc/skel/.bashrc instead. Do "cp /etc/skel/.bashrc /home/jrat/.bashrc"
22:14<abrotman>I said that .. jmcnaught must be wrong too ...
22:14<qwk>abrotman, the FTP was working fine, I had to add a line

22:15<abrotman>qwk: you're allowing the 'root' user to FTP into your system?
22:16<pfsense_rookie>qwk, if this user is just destined for FTP why do you need the amenities of the command line all the time? This issue was easily circumventable with a few more commands on demand.
22:17<qwk>the ftpuser jrat have /var/www as default
22:17<abrotman>qwk: why are you using ftp instead of ftps/sftp ?

22:17<pfsense_rookie>qwk, also Debian usually refers to the vsftpd for ftp servers.
22:18<qwk>yea, but I did some reasearch and pureftpd seem to be more secure

22:26<WangDang>Hi, I'm stuck in my lenny->squeeze upgrade of an amd64 server I'm pulling out of storage. Minimal upgrade went well. Kernel upgrade failed to upgrade to squeeze because of dependancies. Someone here pointed me to an archive of lenny-backports where there was a version of the squeeze kernel. Release notes say the next thing is to upgrade udev to sqz in order "to minimize the risk of other incompatibilities caused by using the old udev wit

23:07<jmcnaught>WangDang: generally what's useful for others to see is the exact command you tried and the complete output. If there's a specific step that fails with an error message, that would be helpful to see. You could check if "pastebinit" is available to install (not sure if it was in Lenny).
