07:32<tdi>YamakasY: apt-cache show package will give you some info
07:33<tdi>YamakasY: but this is not _exactly_ what will be installed along with your package.
07:33<tdi>it depends what dependencies the dependencies have
07:33<YamakasY>tdi: yeah building some package but it complains it needs libtomcat6 and 7 is installed and there is not dependency at all
07:34<tdi>YamakasY: these are build dens
07:34<tdi>YamakasY: apt-get build-dep package
07:34<tdi>these are deps needed for the package to be built
07:34<tdi>not installed

07:38<YamakasY>tdi: I'm building red5-server 1.0.3
07:38<YamakasY>I build 1.0.2 in the past very well
07:39<dimitris_>hi, how can i force evdev ignore a device (mousepad) ?
07:40<tdi>YamakasY: in the official debian package I can see that it Depends on libtomcat6-java (>= 6.0.20-7)
07:41<YamakasY>tdi: yes, but I changed that to 7
07:41<abrotman>you changed?
07:41<YamakasY>tdi: btw, have you checked the control fole ?
07:41<YamakasY>*file ?
07:41<tdi>YamakasY: yes I checked in control file
07:42<tdi>YamakasY: if there is libtomcat6-java - it is for a reason

07:43<YamakasY>abrotman: hellow my friend :)
07:44<YamakasY>abrotman: took the source, changed it in the control file and did dpkg -b red5-server-1.0.3-RELEASE/ red5-server-1.0.3.deb

07:45<YamakasY>abrotman: you are always there for good answers just at once
07:45<tdi>YamakasY: will red5 1.0.3 work with java 7 ?
07:45<abrotman>YamakasY: and when you 'dpkg -I red5-server-1.0.3.deb' .. what does it say ?
07:45<YamakasY>tdi: you too btw :)
07:45<YamakasY>tdi: it should, I have it running on a centos machine
07:45<YamakasY>abrotman: that it needs libtomcat6-java

07:46<tdi>YamakasY: so just install libtomcat7-java and _after_ that your custom red5 package
07:46<abrotman>sounds like you didn't do it correctly

18:27<kowa>pfsense_rookie, Sorry - I got disconnected while experimenting with network-manager and whatnot. Since all I have is eth0, I've just disabled network-manager altogether so it won't interfere.
18:27<kowa>But /etc/network/interfaces still isn't taking effect

18:31<kowa>Yes - I'm trying to run a web server (for a radio dj program called "Airtime") for a community radio station. The server is running on a home network behind a broadband modem/router
18:33<pfsense_rookie>Well, it's best if you just forward the ports later on your modem/router and just use a normal internal ip
18:34<kowa>Centurylink will not allow me to do this. They filter any traffic that is destined for servers on the internal network. Their website (and tech support) said that you must purchase a static IP if you wish to run a server on the network
18:34<pfsense_rookie>kowa, ah that's nonsence.
18:34<pfsense_rookie>Is the modem/router capable of forwarding ports or not?

18:38<pfsense_rookie>kowa, for simple deployments you register on DynDNS or no-ip(DDNS service providers) and you get a hostname like <example>.<domain> and then you just run a client on the internal network to update that hostname without the external IP of your router/modem.
18:39<pfsense_rookie>kowa, if your modem/router allows port forwarding or DMZ.

21:47<interrog>I just got an android phone and I want to load some of the files from my computer to it, but when I connect over USB debian doesnt recongnize the device, what should i do to get them to connect for file transfer?

21:48<_flip> [C]hris: check your PATH variable?
21:49<themill>merrrr: there are lots of reasons why you won't get the number you want out of that -- lots of small files tend to involve a lot more faffing about by rsync. Spinning rust at either end can even make walking the directory structure slow, someone else doing lots of stuff on the network, a crappy hub somewhere not keeping up etc.
21:50<themill>interrog: you generally need to use mtp these days (or use bluetooth transfer or a 3rd party app like AirDroid on the phone)
21:50<[C]hris>well i get errors processing locales and libc6-ppc64
21:50<merrrr>It's a single .7z PCs are connected to a gigabit switch
21:50<[C]hris>on like every package
21:50<merrrr>interrog: Do you have MTP support installed?
21:52<themill>merrrr: dunno then. Is one of the machines pretty low-spec (a little arm board or something)?

21:52<interrog>themill, merrrr: i install gmtp, but that didnt really change anything
21:53<themill>merrrr: so it's pretty easy to max out both the CPU for handling the ssh connection and the IO on the pi
21:53<merrrr>samba is faster ><
21:53<interrog>is there a way to ftp the files into the phone?

21:54<themill>merrrr: so it's probably CPU limited then. There are few ways to reduce the CPU load -- changing ciphers, disabling compression.
21:55<themill>Even still, both the sd card and USB IO on the pi is not that fast.
21:55<merrrr>Time to figure out smbclient
21:57<merrrr>interrog: If you don't mind Wi-Fi speed, AirDroid is one solution.

22:57<jmcnaught>clarence: that tool is in the package gnome-packagekit ("dpkg -S"), but removing it would also remove the gnome metapackages which is probably not desirable. Are you having a problem with it?
22:59-!-screenn [~screen@] has joined #debian
23:01<jmcnaught>clarence: one way to see what would happen if you remove a package is to use apt-get's "--simulate" option which doesn't even require root. for example "apt-get remove gnome-packagekit --simulate" will show you what would be removed. You can check each package in the list to see what it's for with "apt-cache show <packagename>". apt-cache can search and show dependencies among other stuff, see the man page for the full details :)
23:09<clarence>Debian has Symnaptics(spelling?) and gpk-application, but don't know how to update them

23:12<jmcnaught>These are all frontends to the same package system. apt-get, aptitude, synaptic are all packages that get updated the same way that other packages get updated. In general you can use whichever one you like the best. The Debian Reference has a good chapter on the package management system: , also the Debian Administrator's Handbook is another option.
