00:04<sten_>hi! if a library provides a pkg-config.cmake file, where is it supposed to be? Are there any rules? I found some in /usr/lib/arch/cmake/pkg/file (arch dependent ones?) and some in /usr/share/pkg/cmake/file (arch independent?).

01:48<Klinton>can someone explain to me the whole disc 1,2,3 etc. thing? Do all I need for an install is the first disc and then I download updates and packages from there? Also if so what's the deal with DVD and CD? Obviously they are much different in size but does that mean that the DVD just comes with extra stuff for the install that isnt' necissary?

02:46<mberends>pete__: although I am not skilled to pinpoint the specifics of your PXE d-i problem, my experience is that this type of error message is generated at the lowest level of a call stack, but the true cause is one or more levels away from that, and usually not in libc. Therefore, either try an altered installation procedure, or wait for a different d-i build.

04:39<RalfJ>Hi - I am having the issue described in <https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=531002#44> where "apt-get dist-upgrade" suggests to install some new packages, and thus apticron emails me about them. I think I solved it by changing apticron's configuration, but I still wonder why these packages are suggested for installation. The bug is about packages being Essential in testing, and thus being dragged into a mostly-stable system with the testing
04:39<RalfJ>sources enabled (or unstable, but that shouldn't make a difference). However, the packages in question are not Essential in an suite, as far as I can tell... they are libaudit0, libcryptsetup4, libsystemd-daemon0, libsystemd-id128-0, libsystemd-journal0
04:39<RalfJ>is there any way for apt-get to tell me *why* it wants those packages installed?

09:18<dpkg>Some mirrors like ftp.us.debian.org have multiple machines serving them in a DNS round robin. This often isn't a problem but if one machine hasn't updated properly or is down, this can cause apt to complain (e.g. with hashsum mismatch). Instead, use a mirror redirector (ask me about <http.debian.net>) or pick an individual mirror that is close to you (ask me about <mirrors>).

12:00<Smirker>hey guys. i've got a Cisco server and have recently migrated from a single drive to a MegaRAID SAS RAID 1 array. the array is configured properly in the MegaRAID system/BIOS, and tools such a the GParted Live CD can see it -- but when I boot back into Debian Wheezy (which is on the RAID arrray), it still looks like there are two identical disks - sda1, sda2 - and no RAID.
12:00<Smirker>furthermore only one of those disks is mounted to the filesystem. does this mean Debian is only using one of the disks, and the RAID isn't functioning? if so - how would you suggest I fix?

12:29<pfsense_rookie>Plagman, well... At the bottom you can download a .deb from wherever you want. It also defaults to ".de" to me .
12:30<Plagman>for binary packages there's a big mirror selection page, yes
12:30<Plagman>but for source package it's a .de link and that's is
12:30<dondelelcaro>that's probably a bug
12:30<dondelelcaro>(or at least, a missing feature)

12:31<Plagman>I assume generic ftp.debian.org links do automatic mirror selection based on origin location?
12:31<Plagman>so changing these source links to that would probably be a good start
12:31<pfsense_rookie>You can also browse the desired ftp site manually. You can find most packages in the /pool directory.
12:31<Plagman>yeah yeah I'm fully aware of all that pfsense_rookie
12:31<Plagman>was just pointing that out
12:32<pfsense_rookie>Just wondering... are you in Europe?
12:32<Plagman>no, USW
12:32<Plagman>the reason I noticed in the first place is that the .de mirror is actually pretty slow from here
12:32<Plagman>I've just been running s/de/us/ on the urls when grabbing a lot of them
12:32<pfsense_rookie>Oh, I am in Spain so it seems somewhat appropriate even if there is a Debian FTP server in my city.

16:24<dondelelcaro>T00RT00R: most likely you're not using the right kernel for that board; it has a via c7-d, which IIRC, is missing some of the 686 instructions.

20:01<zorak>hi, whats the difference between debian and linux mint
20:01<sney>some packages, some defaults, some policies
20:02<Faulk7>mint has lots of proprietary software while debian comes "free" by default
20:02<zorak>just today install mint 17 and have o install manually the wifi drivers and i think that is that the case why not install debian?
20:03<Faulk7>mint is supposed to be able to work out of the box more because it's loaded with every kind of proprietary driver/codec imaginable

20:05<Faulk7>I'd like to switch to a "freer" platform like debian but right now I'm trying to find an easy to use and configure firewall

20:06<sney>I can't get enough of shorewall for configuring netfilter firewalls
20:06<Faulk7>I'm used to ubuntu and using ufw, but on debian there's no ufw.log file by default. It has to be set up manually.
20:07<sney>zorak: pretty insignificant difference if you have a modern system. hell, even the larger DEs like KDE are pretty quick and "light" if you have a gpu that can do the compositing

22:23<natalia>This is my new debian, I have installed the basic system to upgrade to testing. So, now I have changed from wheezy to testing in sources.list, aptitude dist-upgrade, and now I will begin with the packages
22:23<natalia>sney: If I do that then the dist-upgrade is a mess
22:24-!-rkdemon [~rkdemon@pool-71-244-62-208.dllstx.fios.verizon.net] has joined #debian
22:24<dvs>natalia: Do you really want testing, or do you want jessie?
22:24<natalia>jessie is testing isnt it?
22:24<sney>if your system is already installed then don't use tasksel, use (in your case) the package task-lxde-desktop
22:25<sney>jessie is the current testing, which will be released as debian 8.0 eventually
22:25<dvs>natalia: for now...
22:25<sney>if you have "testing" in sources.list, you will skip debian 8 and go on to the next testing, and the next, etc
22:25<natalia>sney: thanx
22:26<sney>if you change your sources.list entries to "jessie" then you won't just be thrown into the madness that is a post-release debian testing
22:26<natalia>Now I dont know, Im not happy with debian stable, there are always old libraries that need to be upgraded

22:27<natalia>sney: is it really a madness?? it isnt sid after all
22:27-!-T0rch_ [~T0rch@191.185.37.93] has joined #debian
22:28<sney>natalia: that early in the development process it basically is sid
22:28<sney>even now, the only thing that separates 90% of testing from sid is 10 days' wait in the archive
22:28<sney>probably higher than 90% even
22:30<natalia>sney: then I want jessie, Im changing it from testing to jessie in sources.list, I will dist-upgrade and then task-lxde-desktop
22:30<sney>ok.
22:32<natalia>thank you
22:32<natalia>it is sudo aptitude install task-lxde-desktop right?
22:33<sney>that would do it, yes
