07:27<Snacksicles>hey, I'm trying to add a ppa on debian. On ubuntu, you'd do "sudo add-apt-repository ppa:glennric/dolphin-emu", but "add-apt-repository" doesn't exist on debian (checked with "apt-cache search" on debian unstable). And since every ubuntu apt-get tutorial mentions "debian packages", searching for "debian ppa" completely fails. What do I do?
07:28<abrotman>Snacksicles: PPAs aren't meant for Debian

07:28-!-knuty [~quassel@81.27.40.63] has joined #debian
07:29<Snacksicles>I know, but there's got to be some sort of workaround for that.
07:30<Snacksicles>Come to think of it, does debian have an equivalent to PPAs?
07:30-!-stuart [~quassel@host-78-148-110-105.as13285.net] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
07:31<supaman>Snacksicles: you can just put a deb line in your sources.list containing the url for the ppa (with distribution and section names after the url)
07:32<supaman>Snacksicles: for example: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/something/something/ubuntu precise main
07:32<Snacksicles>not sure where I read it, but there was something about ppas and sources.list not mixing? and you're better off using sources.list.d?
07:32<Snacksicles>I've come back to this every few days for a few times now, so I can't remember where I got that
07:33<abrotman>Snacksicles: what is the PPA for?
07:33<supaman>Snacksicles: hmm, I got one ppa in my sources.list and it works
07:33<Snacksicles>is there any reason why your solution would break, though?
07:33<abrotman>let's step back a minute
07:34<Snacksicles>I'm trying to install Dolphin (gamecube emulator), and despite the fact that I own the various gamecube games. I can see why it'd be put in a PPA, though - it conflicts with some idiotic laws in some places, so it makes sense to have it separate.
07:34<abrotman>Snacksicles: what is the PPA for? Do you really need an outside package?
07:35<Snacksicles>the debian wiki just has a link to the dolphin website on the "emulators" page, so yeah.

07:36<Snacksicles>I don't see any way of avoiding an outside source for dolphin-emu, unless it's added to the debian repository. That said, some idiotic laws might conflict with it.

07:49-!-mitto_gee [~Mitt@95-55-125-140.dynamic.avangarddsl.ru] has quit []
07:49<abrotman>PPAs are not meant for Debian, sometimes they work, sometimes they leave your system in pieces
07:51<Snacksicles>when you say "sometimes", is that a 10% sometimes, or a 90% sometimes?
07:52<SynrGy>there is sufficient uncertainty to warrant avoiding them as a rule
07:52<abrotman>Snacksicles: It means I wouldn't do it :)
07:53<SynrGy>for those who claim compatibility, it is usually the maintainer's fondest hope their repo will continue to work with debian as well as ubuntu, so they list "debian" on their home page ... but i wouldn't count on it.
07:54<SynrGy>the way to guarantee compatibility is to build each new release of the software against the intended target release for the target distro.
07:54<SynrGy>and ppas typically don't do that for debian.
07:54<SynrGy>so if it works at all, it's by accident :p

As expected, I get a connection timed out message, after a couple minutes, in iceweasel on the laptop. If I add the command "iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -s 192.168.1.0/24 -p tcp -m multiport --dports 631 -j ACCEPT", I immediately get a connection failed message in iceweasel. I can connect

If I click on add printer again, the printer no longer shows up as an option to be added. I've quit and restarted links2 and restarted the cupsd daemon, but I still can't see the printer in Manage Printers

22:53<debianhelpme>the layout is as follows: I have an AP, then I have a router running openWRT that connects in client bridge mode. The openWRT router is connected to this debian box. I'm trying to bridge the connection from this debian box to another WiFi cell. And that is correct. It gets an IP from the DHCP server of the orginal AP, yet it can only ping up to the openWRT router...
22:54<debianhelpme>and the openWRT client bridge mode is working correctly. This debian box is on the same subnet and can access hosts as if it were directly connected to the orgianl AP
22:56<Luticus>do you have any iptables rules configured?
22:58<pfsense_rookie>debianhelpme, client bridge is what I use on an AP to communicate wirelessly with the gatway and the have only ethernet clients.
22:58<debianhelpme>I shall check, and I'm also reading about ebtables
22:58<Luticus>I've actually done something similar but when I built it I used iptables

22:59<debianhelpme>well thats the goal
23:00<Luticus>alright so the way I did it was I set up an init.d script
23:00<debianhelpme>it just seems strange that I got a message during boot that said bridge mode not supported on wlan0 yet it is putting out a singal and the wireless client is getting a DHCP yet cant ping the orginal AP
23:01<debianhelpme>Luticus: you thinking that a direct bridge won't work and I'll need a squid proxy?
23:01<debianhelpme>yet it can ping the openwrt router
23:01<Luticus>I'm not saying a squid proxy
23:01<Luticus>but I'm saying you can likely use iptables to do what you want

23:16<Luticus>ok I put the rules and everything here: http://pastebin.com/RvxsDBuy it's dumbed down from what I have because mines all about squid and forwarding everything through an very locked down firewall. this will just forward packets from one interface to the other connecting two subnets, you may need a new dhcp server on the new network (the debian box can host it if need be, and the debian box should be used as the gateway)
