02:06<MoaLaiSkirulais>its a linux of 9MB "Tiny"
02:07<moe>if you used the net install ISO or ISO from the website and chose defaults then you should be looking at desktop. If you delected this then you should be looking at a login prompts

02:09<SamB_laptop>themill: which actually renders
02:09<themill>SamB_laptop: apt-get seems to know where to look. (that URL has changed several times in the past and aptitude is probably just looking in the wrong place)
02:10<SamB_laptop>themill: I don't think aptitude even tried
02:11<SamB_laptop>I think it just looked at, say, the Origin and said "that's not Debian, so I don't know where to find changelogs"

02:31<SmitySmiter>https://www.debian.org/CD/netinst/ <- I downloaded amd64 version from that page
02:32<SmitySmiter>and I did "cat name.is > /dev/sdb1" to prepare live USB (someone from heresuggested doing that, yesterday)
02:32<SmitySmiter>but I see a few gibberish files inside USB after doing that

02:35<SamB_laptop>SmitySmiter: did you try booting off of it?
02:35<SmitySmiter>none of the live USBs I've prepared before look like that... :-/
02:35<SmitySmiter>I did once, that just said "corrupted OS"
02:35<SmitySmiter>haven't tried with this brand new image though
02:36<SmitySmiter>is that how a live USB would look like? :-/
02:36<SamB_laptop>oh, okay, that's gibberisher than I'd expect
02:36<SmitySmiter>yep
02:36<SamB_laptop>how did that even mount!
02:37<SmitySmiter>mount what?
02:37<SmitySmiter>I didn't mount the ISO
02:37<SamB_laptop>I mean, it's so garbage-looking I'm having trouble with the idea that it was accepted as a filesystem at all
02:38<SmitySmiter>:p
02:38<SmitySmiter>so, how exactly do I prepare a live USB from that netinst ISO?
02:38<SmitySmiter>I know unetbootin will unleash hell (I nuked + installed 2 days ago, because of Unet)
02:39<SamB_laptop>SmitySmiter: why are you trying to use the netinst ISO?
02:40<SmitySmiter>someone suggested that was the cleanest + safest
02:40<AyanameRei>https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/ch04s03.html.en
02:41<AyanameRei>that should walk you through preparing a bootable USB stick
02:41<SmitySmiter>ah, thank you AyanameRei, checking

04:15<SmitySmiter>so guys, I tried doing 4.3.1 mentioned here : https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/ch04s03.html.en
04:16<SmitySmiter>with the following ISOs: debian-live-7.6.0-amd64-gnome-desktop.iso AND debian-7.6.0-amd64-netinst.iso
04:16<SmitySmiter>both failed
04:16<SmitySmiter>the first one (1.3GB ISO), showed "corrupted OS" and then went on to boot from my HDD
04:16<SmitySmiter>the 2nd one (netinst), did not do anything at all and booted from HDD

04:48<carson>hi, I have a problem with plugging/unplugging external hardware (usb devices, esata, etc.). They are only detected when I reboot, even though systemd-udevd is running in the background. When I plug them in with "sudo udevadm monitor" running, no kernel events or udev events are generated. Any hints on how to debug this problem?
04:48<carson>I only noticed this problem last week, so I don't know exactly which update caused it (I apt-get update nearly every day)

07:25<SmitySmiter>got kicked for flooding, here's the source list :https://bpaste.net/show/9f21fdb8d602
07:26<gsimmons>SmitySmiter: There isn't any mention of "non-free" within.
07:26<gsimmons>dpkg: non-free sources
07:26<dpkg>Edit /etc/apt/sources.list, ensure that the two main Debian mirror lines end with "main contrib non-free" rather than just "main", then «aptitude update». But bear in mind that you'll be installing <non-free> software. These may have onerous terms; check the licenses. See also <sources.list>.
07:26<SmitySmiter>hmm, I enabled it from within the Synaptic manager, is there more to it?
07:27<gsimmons>SmitySmiter: See above. You want "main contrib non-free" in the respective lines.
07:28<supaman>SmitySmiter: instead of wheezy main contrib, you want wheezy main contrib non-free (do this by text editor, something must have gone wrong with synaptic)
07:28<SmitySmiter>ah, all right :)
07:28<SmitySmiter>do I add a new line or just add contrib no-free to the existing one?

13:01<fantasma>hi, is there the possibility to hold 'logcheck' and 'tripwire' during installing postfix? i mean, i'm still using tripwire from an removeable device, so that shouldn't be the problem. but what about logcheck, is it useable with postfix? postfix will also transport the local/system messages, right?
13:02<fantasma>'apt-get -t wheezy-backports install postfix --simulate' says that logcheck and tripwire will went by with exim4 :/

13:03<peter1138>huh?
13:03<sney>!unmarkauto
13:03<dpkg>Is apt trying to remove packages that it thinks were automatically installed? This happens when you "aptitude install gnome" and then later remove bits of it causing the gnome meta-package to be uninstalled and then all its dependencies. Fix this by running "aptitude unmarkauto packagename" on strategically chosen packages, or reinstall the <metapackage> (apt-get also has unmarkauto from squeeze onwards).
13:04<peter1138>i definitely have logcheck installed with postfix, though i never bothered with backported postfix
