01:17<SmitySmiter>hello guys, I'm trying to dual boot windows and debian (7.6), right now installing Debian and it's asking where to install grub
01:18<jm_>what's the default choice it suggests?
01:18<SmitySmiter>/dev/sdb is the default option, but isn't that the USB drive? I tried /dev/sda (master boot record) but that returned an error
01:18<SmitySmiter>others options are
01:18<SmitySmiter>/dev/sda2 /dev/sdc5
01:19<SmitySmiter>/dev/sda2 I have windows installed
01:19<jm_>so /dev/sda
01:19<jm_>you can see which is which by doing cat /proc/partitions or using fdisk
01:19<jm_>or poking in /sys/block and so on
01:19<SmitySmiter>hmm
01:20<SmitySmiter>can't do /dev/sda that returned error
01:20<jm_>what's the error?
01:20<SmitySmiter>hold on
01:20<jm_>see if there's a log file from grub-install in /tmp
01:20<jm_>both /tmp and /target/tmp
01:20<SmitySmiter>Unable to install grub on /dev/sda. this is a fatal error
01:20<jm_>try installing it manually
01:21<SmitySmiter>hmm
01:21<jm_>!fixmbr
01:21<dpkg>To reinstall <GRUB> boot to your Debian install disk/live CD, switch to the other console (Alt-F2), then mount your root filesystem (mount -t ext2 /dev/whatever /target ; mount --bind /dev /target/dev ; mount -t proc none /target/proc ; mount -t sysfs none /target/sys), then chroot into it (chroot /target) and run "update-grub && grub-install /dev/whatever". See also <rescue mode>, <dual boot guide>, <supergrub>. Also works for EFI!
01:21<jm_>from chroot onwards
01:21<SamB_laptop>are there really only two consoles in d-i ?
01:21*SamB_laptop never really noticed
01:21<jm_>(the rest should be done by the installer, but verify it anyway)
01:21<jm_>SamB_laptop: no, there's also tty3 and 4 with logs, but that's about it AFAIK
01:22<SamB_laptop>huh

01:24<SmitySmiter>jm_, how do I exit that console?
01:24<SmitySmiter>Alt + F2 console..
01:24<jm_>SmitySmiter: alt-f1 to get back to the installer (exit from chroot first though)
01:24<SmitySmiter>apparenty, my drives are /dev/sdb...
01:24<jm_>how do you know?
01:25<SamB_laptop>does lsblk work under d-i ?
01:25<SmitySmiter>fdisk
01:25<jm_>so d-i is smart after all!
01:25<jm_>it's strange that /dev/sda2 is listed then

01:30<SmitySmiter>yep
01:31<SmitySmiter>also, since the wifi driver is not available
01:31<SmitySmiter>I forgot to note down when it said which one was required

02:14<worker123>Good day, I have written a single custom debian package for a daemon. It works well and consists of several java jar files that are put down by the package. I would like to split the package into multiple parts due to bandwidth constraints.
02:14<worker123>however, i am worried about the affect of replacing jar's while the daemon is running, what is the best practice for a situation like this ? should i have a master package that depends on all the individual jar packages ? if so, should each individual jar package stop the daemon before it is upgraded ?
02:15<worker123>in the single package scenario it was easy, i simply stopped the daemon in the prerm script, however i am not sure what to do with multiple packages
02:15<worker123>if i did stop the service for each individual jar package, is there an elegant way to detect when all individual jar packages have been upgraded so that i can start the service again after the last package has been upgraded ? Thanks

09:33<worker123>Good day, I have written a single custom debian package for a daemon. It works well and consists of several java jar files that are put down by the package. I would like to split the package into multiple parts due to bandwidth constraints.
09:33<worker123>however, i am worried about the affect of replacing jar's while the daemon is running, what is the best practice for a situation like this ? should i have a master package that depends on all the individual jar packages ? if so, should each individual jar package stop the daemon before it is upgraded ?
09:33<worker123>in the single package scenario it was easy, i simply stopped the daemon in the prerm script, however i am not sure what to do with multiple packages
09:33<worker123>if i did stop the service for each individual jar package, is there an elegant way to detect when all individual jar packages have been upgraded so that i can start the service again after the last package has been upgraded ? Thanks
09:34<SynrG>sounds like an appropriate question for #debian-mentors

10:58<sschopman>Hello all… was curious about some help. I have a Asus Zenbook UX302LA… I am trying to install Debian for the first time… Coming from Mint… I am trying to do a fresh install… I am in the graphical installer but when i get to network, it is not detecting my network hardware and giving me a list of a bunch of network drivers… i dont know what my network card is… is there any easy way to get the info of my card?
10:58<petn-randall>sysvalve: That's not true. Normal *block* devices usually have a block size of 512 bytes, newer ones 4096 bytes. dd writes byte-by-byte if you don't override the default with the 'bs=<bytesize>' option. If you use the default, in worst case you'll have the block being overritten 4096 times, which will result in poor performance and write fatigue.
10:58-!-magyar [~magyar@76.21.119.81] has joined #debian
10:58<centrx>sschopman, You can switch to another terminal with Alt-F2, and run the "lspci" command to show all your PCI devices, graphics card should be in there
10:59<petn-randall>sysvalve: This is why you use 'cp' to create usb boot sticks, because it intelligently scales the block size to achieve the best performance.
10:59<weasel>chances are that when it prompts you, it doesn't have support for it..
11:00<centrx>sschopman, ^^
11:00<sschopman>centrx: hmmm Alt-f2 doesn’t seem to be doing anything for me… It should work while in the graphical installer?

11:00-!-wlfuetter [~wlfuetter@frnk-4d00f26b.pool.mediaWays.net] has joined #debian
11:00<sysvalve>petn-randall: you can write a program that will fool you into believing that it is writing byte by byte. But the kernel and de hardware itself will do it block by block
11:00<centrx>sschopman, try Ctrl-Alt-F2
11:00<sysvalve>s/de/the/
11:00<centrx>sschopman, or maybe there is a button in the graphical interface to open a console, I haven't used the graphical installer
11:01<sysvalve>in fact, you just can't write down just a byte in a disk
11:01<sysvalve>you need to write a whole block
11:01<sschopman>centrx: that worked! I just ran lspci… what am i looking for now?
11:02<petn-randall>sysvalve: Yes, since dd doesn't use sync I/O by default. But it will still start writing on the first byte, and at least a second time to fill the block, resulting in bad performance.
11:02<centrx>sschopman, something like "Network"
11:02<centrx>sschopman, e.g. mine is: 00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection (rev 04)
11:02<centrx>sschopman, there may be two, for wired and wireless
11:03<sysvalve>petn-randall: I don't actually know the implementation details, but I'm pretty sure that the underlying kernel will write whole blocks
11:03<sschopman>Network Controller: Interl Corporation Device 08b1 (rev 6b)
11:03-!-Defaultti [defaultti@lakka.kapsi.fi] has quit [Quit: Quitting.]
11:03<sysvalve>that's where I guess the bad performance shows up. dd writes a byte, the kernel sends a whole block
11:03<valdyn>dd performance is good enough unless you tell it bs=1 or something similarily stupid

19:18<dpkg>e-Town: I give up, what is it?
19:19<e-Town>dpkg, bots
19:19<dpkg>We have lots of bots around to help out with different things. dpkg (<dpkgbot>) and <judd> are the main two for factoids and package information; dselect (<dselectbot>) fills in for dpkg. There's also debhelper (flooding, moderating), apt, ... Most bots are also in #debian-bots if you can't use /msg to talk to them. Be nice to the bots though; they have feelings, bleed oil and let out the <magic smoke> when angry.
