04:30<minx>hello
04:31<minx>I would like to ask you for small help. I am learning to build and patch a packages for Debian and I am stuck with patching bash ver. 2.05b
04:34<jm_>that's almost 10 years old
04:34<minx>first I download the source "apt-get source bash" and I have the bash_xxx.diff.gz, bash_xxx.dsc, bash_xxx.orig.tar.gz and unpacked bash-xxx folder
04:34<minx>so far so good

04:35<minx>in the unpacked folder bash-2.05b-2 there is "debian" folder and a bash tar.gz file
04:35<jm_>!folder
04:35<dpkg>folder is a directory damn it! near My Computer and Network Neighborhood... or the things you put in a filing cabinet. IMAP protocol's mailboxes.
04:36<Nemoder>minx, I use: apt-get build-dep <package>; debuild -uc -us -b
04:36<Nemoder>but check the manuals
04:37<minx>the only question is, why in unpacked bash directory there, where normally I find "debian" dir and the package file's, this time I have another tar.gz
04:38-!-edhelas_ [~edhelas@193.172.124.224] has joined #debian
04:38<jm_>depends on the source package and build method it uses - it's not uncommon, also, I hope you unpacked it properly using dpkg-source
04:38<jm_>(in such cases the actual build process will unpack it)

04:43<minx>my steps are: 1. apt-get source bash 2. apt-get build-dep bash 3. cd bash-2.05b-2 4. tar zxvf bash-2.05b.tar.gz 5. dch --nmu 6. patchen 7. dpk-buildpackage -uc -us -b
04:44<jm_>that's most likely not going to work for such a package - you'll want to unpack bash-2.05b.tar.gz somewhere, patch it, repack it in the same way as original, put it back and repeat step 7.
04:44<minx>and dpkg-buildpackage failes, it says it can't find bash-2.05b.tar.gz. Obviously in step 4 I unpaceked it, otherwise command "pach" kept asking me which file has to be patched and it could find anything as it was in tar.gz

12:30<SynrGy>Joffer: the definitive answer is to examine the source. otherwise, the appendix in the Debian installation guide matching your version should suffice.

12:39<Joffer>yes, well I've been reading lots of versions of them today.. might be a bit blind...
12:39<SynrGy>and it reads: "The examples below only provide basic information on the use of recipes. For detailed information see the files partman-auto-recipe.txt and partman-auto-raid-recipe.txt included in the debian-installer package. Both files are also available from the debian-installer source repository. Note that the supported functionality may change between releases."
12:40<SynrGy>and it links to the debian-installer source repository
12:40<SynrGy>as i said, the source will be definitive
12:40<Joffer>I've been through partman-auto-recipe.txt also.. just feel like I've tried everything
12:41<Joffer>my tries have been more advanced than the pastebin, with own recipe etc..
12:41<Joffer>should have a break I guess.. and look in the source repo as well..
12:42<SynrGy>yep. but of course make sure you're on the right branch/tag/whatever
12:42<SynrGy>(whatever corresponds to latest 7.x release)
12:42<SynrGy>or else fetch the source directly from the archive for the version shipping with the release you're using
12:43<SynrGy>if you're really stuck after reading the appropriate source, #debian-boot might be able to help you.

12:47<Joffer>thats ok. I'm just hoping to find a better doc than what I found on debian.org, which I guess is where I should find the best doc.. hmmm..

I also have several Ubuntu vms elsewhere and they all recieved an updated bash, somewhere like 4.3 sumsuch version #... I notice that AWS has its own Debian repo.. Is this likely why I get no

23:34<tranjeeshan>So, I have to use Linux kernel from Wheezy backports and associated firmware-iwlwifi for WiFi?
23:35<themill>or maybe it does and I'm going mad.

23:36<Vyrus001>anybody know why when i set my GRUB_GFXMODE and GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_lINUX in /etc/default/grub my terminal and grub screen resolution does not change?
23:36<tranjeeshan>I think WiFi would work okay, cause I have found 3160 firmware in Wheezy backports
23:36<tranjeeshan>What about VGA?
23:36<gsimmons>themill: They're listed as supported devices at my end.
23:37<twb>Is this how you check? modinfo iwlwifi | grep -i -e 808608b3 -e 808608b4
23:37<Vyrus001>tranjeeshan: was that VGA comment to me?
23:37<twb>Oh there are some more zeroes between them.
23:37<themill>twb: yeah
23:37<twb>"modinfo iwlwifi | grep -i -e 8086.*08b3 -e 8086.*08b4" finds matches on jessie.
23:37<themill>gsimmons: nm, I think (a) I'm blind and (b) judd's importer has been broken by a kernel change
23:38<tranjeeshan>@Vyrus001, you could answer it

23:39<Vyrus001>(atleast thats whta google tells me)
23:40<themill>Which implies that depmod is failing on newer kernels.

23:48<twb>chealer: so the background is this -- I put kiosks in front of prison inmates, and because paranoia, they get a bpo kernel with most drivers compiled out. Whenever I get around to it, I rebuild off the current bpo kernel, so I need two things: the current boot/config-NNN that the stock bpo kernel used, and a diff of that against the stock bpo config I was working from last time.
23:49<twb>chealer: but linux-image builds the config from a bunch of snippets and <scary magic> so the easiest way I know to get that file, is to download the whole .deb and then just keep the one file from it
