02:13<twb>So I have a bunch of diskless wheezy kiosks in a prison. To make it harder to share information, I told xdm that whenever a user logs out, it should reboot (thus resetting the whole desktop). My problem is they're set to shutdown each night, but shutdown kills the X session -- which then runs "reboot" and the shutdown becomes a reboot.
02:14<twb>What's the least silly way to deal with this? I know if you schedule a shutdown (e.g. "shutdown 17:00") you can't run another shutdown, but it seems that check doesn't apply to a reboot while a shutdown is *underway*.
02:14-!-debalance [~debalance@2a02:908:f310:c880:c9bd:384a:aae:4d0d] has joined #debian
02:14<twb>Since this is sysvinit, I'm thinking I could check runlevel(8) is "N 2"; if it's "2 0" then don't try to reboot.
02:15-!-libregeekingkid [~quassel@219.91.209.45] has joined #debian
02:15<twb>And I can probably test this easier if I put a "sleep 5m" at the top of one of the early shutdown/reboot scripts...
02:15<jm_>or perhaps add a delay before reboot?
02:16<twb>as in in /etc/X11/xdm/Xreset change "exec reboot" to "sleep 5m && exec reboot" ?
02:16-!-resmo [~moserre@2001:1620:f00:80de:b80d:d0ab:2266:3207] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
02:16<jm_>something like that yes, enough of a delay to cause shutdown to kill it before it gets the change to reboot on its own
02:17<twb>Oh I see
02:17<jm_>(graceful stop would come before the kill)
02:17<twb>I thought you meant just for testing
02:17-!-me|kor [~me|kor@mbpc29.cs.uni-saarland.de] has joined #debian
02:17<twb>I'm not sure I like that idea because it's liable to lead to difficult-to-diagnose race condition heisenbugs
02:18<twb>(At least, that's my gut feel.)
02:19<jm_>or run invoke-rc.d xdm stop before shutdown?
02:19<jm_>or rather, before reboot
02:19<twb>I think that'll have the same effect as currently, but I can try it
02:20<jm_>if there was a way to differentiate between exit and logout it would allow for cleaner approach I guess

02:28<twb>What was that package that would try to preseed the the kernel's RAM cache of disk blocks, by catting a bunch of needed-early-on files to /dev/null ?
02:29<jm_>readahead-fedore/preload
02:29<twb>readahead, thanks
02:30<jm_>how much speedup do you get from it?
02:30<twb>I'm not using it yet
02:30<twb>But the first login after a reboot is noticably slower
02:31<twb>so my idea is/was to tell readahead to pre-cache stuff like xfwm
02:31<twb>Looks like there's also a readhead in busybox, but it's not enabled in debian's normal busybox package.
02:32<jm_>at home i have a ssd so would probably not notice much, at work it's running 24/7 so there's no point in trying

02:32<twb>jm_: yeah I don't think most people get much out of it
02:32<twb>But I have a 1GB filesystem.squashfs (root filesystem) and 8GB of RAM so until they start filling it with chromium, I can pretty much copy the whole OS to RAM
02:33<twb>The only reason I don't boot with "toram" is that runs synchronously -- they'd not be able to start using the desktop til after the copy had finished

03:39<ErronousNickname>I forgot the name of an application: It's a gui to some kind of script that launches other programs but forcing them to use a SOCKS proxy. Hope it's ok to ask here.
03:40<ErronousNickname>(The Question is: Does anyone know the name of a program that can do that?)
03:41<twb>As in it lets you use SOCKS5 with an app that has no support for SOCKS ?

07:55<jm_>you must install virtualbox tools in the guest
07:55<peter1138>Ah, that thing :-)

07:56<peter1138>Yeah, you probably need the guest additions to enable some form of 3D acceleration.
07:56<peter1138>Fallback mode is pretty basic.
07:56<VikeStep>yeah, i never remember selecting a fallback mode
07:57<VikeStep>but after running tasksel install gnome-desktop --new-install and rebooting it didnt happen. I'll see if I can add these virtualbox tools
07:57<LjL>hello. is #debian-next for testing/unstable-specific questions, or should i ask any questions there if i'm using them?

I am a teacher in a local university and I am teaching about network security. my students are learning about Debian Linux and we will build a small lab for pentesting and things like this......... the scenario we got here is a vulnerable machine with root access (over SSH)

20:28<Brigo>netinstall occupies 490 MB?
20:28<Brigo>priasm, what about the ram?
20:29<priasm>with ram i don't have problem, i have more than 1 gb
20:29<priasm>right now yes, before occupies 500+

20:30<trare>that causes a lot of bad fragmentation if your disk starts getting full, priasm
20:30<Brigo>priasm, you can delete the /usr/doc
20:30-!-viskee [~viskee@155.229.3.50] has joined #debian
20:31<Brigo>priasm, and may be the man pages, and you can install localepurge to purge unused locales (all of it)
20:32<priasm>so i try to delete /usr/doc, how remove man page? locales i think there are one, i select only 1 languages on install with netinstall, i have to try anyway?
20:33<trare>priasm: try debootstrap, instead of netinst
20:33<trare>it is much much smaller (if you make it that way)
20:34<priasm>trare: how to install on a USB?
20:34<Brigo>priasm, each package has its own locales, so when you install a package you install the translation for all the languaje in this package.
20:35<priasm>ok, i try to remove locales
20:35<trare>priasm: i don't know, i haven't used it. it is a very hands-on manual install process, like installing arch or gentoo, but you can choose down to the individual files you want
20:37<priasm>https://wiki.debian.org/Debootstrap seems like it installed on a file or partition in another system, i don't understand how install on usb
20:37<trare>installing to usb is just like installing to any other device
20:38<priasm>i try to understand the install process and try with that
20:38<trare>perhaps you could use a filesystem that supports compression, like btrfs?
20:38<trare>if your goal is that you need to free up some space to fit it.

20:49<Pixionus>So I'm only coming to you after a lot of my own invested time and effort so if this is an easy question please forgive me.
20:50<Pixionus>does anyone know where I can find a list of the modules I need to enable in the kernel to run iptables?
20:50<trare>Pixionus: it depends heavily on what iptables features you need
20:50<priasm>apt-get install localepurge --> packet localepurge not found (my message is in onother languages)
20:50<trare>priasm: did you do apt-get update first?
20:51<Pixionus>trare: basic firewall utilities.
20:52<Pixionus>We have these servers deployed remotely and behind AND infront of client NAT's and I need to throw a firewall on them.
20:52<priasm>yeah i have first update
20:53<Pixionus>need to keep the kernel kind of small so I can't just enable everything.
20:53<trare>Pixionus: nf_conntrack_ipv4, iptable_filter, nf_nat_ipv4, x_tables, ip_tables. i think those are the main ones, maybe
20:53<trare>maybe also xt_state

23:02<twb>Thunar is XFCE's file manager. It talks via dbus to gvfs, GNOME's layer for random weird filesystem-y things (e.g. old-style cameras). SFTP is provided by that.

23:03<twb>When I get thunar on a desktop to trundle off to sftp://root@server/fred I can view files no problem. I can copy them to the local system and open them there. But if I double-click on them to open them in place, at least chromium, libreoffice and mousepad all come up with an empty document -- they don't seem to realize they were asked to open a file over sftp
23:04<twb>And chromium's File > Open dialog *can* see the sftp directory in its sidebar, so it has at least some level of gvfs integration.
23:04<twb>I asked #xfce on freenode but the gvfs bits are totally opaque to most of them
23:05-!-tjader_ [~tjader@189.60.217.22] has joined #debian
23:05<twb>I can't even do something simple like stracing the thunar process, because the actual I/O gets done by completely separate dbus-launched helper processes

23:06<twb>Hm, since I suspect it might be confused by the fact that sftp://root@ is reading files that the DAC says it isn't allowed to (due to CAP_OVERRIDE), I should probably try it just doing normal sftp as a non-root user.
