00:11<Cylus>I have been asked to duplicate a CD. What would be the best way to go about doing this?
00:11<Cylus>Would just dragging and dropping the files be all I need to do?
00:13<somiaj>Cylus: depends, if it is just data and has a file system on it sure. you can also just copy the .iso (cd image) directly from teh device

00:15<Cylus>somiaj: Copy the .iso from the device as in ... "dd /dev/<device> <file>"?
00:17<somiaj>Cylus: or just cp /dev/device filename.iso
00:17<somiaj>then use a bruning tool to burn that iso
00:17<Cylus>Okay, sweet. Thanks somiaj!

00:24<uso>Cylus: you can try k3b, it has predefined projects for different tasks, like copying data CDs, audio CDs, ..
00:26<Cylus>That would probably be easier, but it looks like it pulls in a lot of dependencies, including the KDE runtime.
00:28<uso>Cylus: that's the disadvantage of GUI programs, right, command line tools usually are much more lightweight
00:28<Cylus>I'm a bit hesitant to pull in major components from other desktops. Certain components mess things up. For example, whenever I install LXDE, some component breaks my notifications across all desktops.
00:28<themill>sure, it uses kde libraries for everything -- if you used any other k* you'd already have them installed. There are gtk programs that you could use instead (brasero?)
00:29<_spOOn_>genisoimage + fluxbox :)

02:41<weasel>you said you upgrade weekly.
02:42<weasel>you haven't upgraded your linux-image-amd64 package in months, at least.
02:42<themill>A dist-upgrade would be required here, not just an upgrade.

02:48<themill>Well, not installing a new package means that a new kernel package doesn't get installed.
02:49<themill>To be brutally candid, a user of sid should be on top of these sorts of things... if someone doesn't know their way around debian well enough to deal with this sort of situation, then they don't know their way around debian well enough to run sid. sid is not designed for end users...
02:49<Snacksicles>which sort of makes sense, but I've read the definitions of both upgrade and dist-upgrade at LEAST three times before, and I couldn't tell why they weren't interchangeable.
02:52<Snacksicles>I don't see how I would have learned this on debian stable.

03:00<Snacksicles>so, apparently dist-upgrade is for upgrading to "a different distribution" - what exactly does that mean? Because I dist-upraded when I switched to sid, and people refer to sid as "a rolling-release distribution", but here I am.
03:01<themill>no, that's not what dist-ugprade is for at all

03:12<Snacksicles>so, you'd generally want to use dist-upgrade to actually upgrade, and use upgrade... I have no clue when.
03:12<Snacksicles>sudo apt-get fencesitting-upgrade
03:13<Apollo>upgrade can usually be done without taking much notice, dist-upgrade, not so much
03:14<Snacksicles>well, I'm going to see what happens if I upgrade EVERYTHING from the last few months, all at once with dist-upgrade.
03:14<themill>!why not dist-upgrade
03:14<dpkg>If you're going to use apt-get dist-upgrade (or aptitude full-upgrade), when you run the command, you need to make absolutely sure that it isn't going to remove anything you actually want to have installed. If it does, use apt-get install to install specific packages that have been held back on apt-get upgrade, and only allow upgrades that don't remove things that you want. Ask me about <pinning> <hold> <unmarkauto>.

I've tried wheezy-backports, but they pulled no patches for libgnutls26. Can anyone point me to a solution?
15:39<i3>dbarstow: i dont know about debian im from suse camp but maybe adding the mozilla nss certificates or soemthing?
15:40<Ryccardo>assuming it's in the form of a module, you must compile it (for that exact kernel version) and put it in the appropriate location with the right permissions, then repack the ramdisk... never did it tbh
15:40<i3>Ryccardo: sounds ... difficult : (
15:41<Ryccardo>probably easier to bring kernel source over USB or whatever and compile new kernel+ramdisk there indeed
15:41<i3>i guess it will not be possible to pxe-boot the steamos installer then .. needs a cd-rom drive or usb stick : (
15:42<i3>i can pxe-boot the "vmlinuz" and "initrd.gz" from the steamos installer over network just fine .. but the debian installer that then pops up doesnt have network support so after the installer loads it can only access a cd-rom drive : (

17:38<cb27265>Mordor you need a drive that was a bit bigger or with the same amount of sectors/blocks
17:38<retrospectacus>dd is not a great way to backup, usually
17:39<retrospectacus>better is rsync or tar or so
17:39<retrospectacus>!things to backup
17:39<dpkg>Some things you should back up include: /etc /home /root /usr/local /usr/src /opt /srv. Tailor to your own purposes. If you think you don't need /var, make sure you don't forget /var/lib/dpkg /var/lib/apt* /var/lib/mysql /var/mail /var/www /var/cache/debconf /var/spool/cron ...

19:38<nooryani84>The concept is new to me, just reading about it now
19:38<peter1138>i don't know, i've only ever bonded 2
19:39<peter1138>there are various modes
19:39<nooryani84>It sounds basically like raid
19:39<cb27265>only if you get the same problems like me

19:39<peter1138>other modes exist that can use both nics at once, but they generally require special switch configuration
19:40<nooryani84>well i'll avoid comparing it to RAID as I'm sure it's entirely different
19:40<cb27265>my router detect an arp-spoof while i dont set it up right and one card wont sleep ;) so better double check it
19:40<peter1138>802.3ad configuration is possible
19:40<peter1138>cb27265, yeah, generally it interferes with port security settings :(
19:41<exoplanet>If i want to put a bridge on top so LXC-Containers can get their own LAN ip address, which kind of bridge would i use? A routed "Simple Brdige" (see LXC wiki article), which uses the bond0?

19:42<peter1138>exoplanet, url?
19:42<exoplanet>https://wiki.debian.org/LXC/SimpleBridge
19:43<peter1138>ah yes
19:43<peter1138>instead of bridge_ports eth0, you can bridge_ports bond0
19:43<exoplanet>ah okay.
19:44<peter1138>i have added complication, with bridging over vlan tagging over bonding...
19:45<peter1138>mainly because i don't have a separate interface to do out-of-band management
19:45<exoplanet>So the host has it's own IP and every LXC-container, and they "can't" see each others traffic. Where would i configure the host ip? With an additional interface that uses the bond, but is not part of the bridge?
19:45<peter1138>configure the host address on the bridge

20:16<exoplanet>skkdkk, no, after the 5th there will be no major updates of software. Jessie will be stabilized for several month an then released as stable. There will be smaller updates and bug fixes, but no new major versions e.g. of XBMC.
