01:13<twb>I am booting off a squashfs4 root filesystem, loading blocks on demand over NFSv3. (aufs'd with a tmpfs). To make simplify cleanup, when a user logs out, I just force a reboot. But this means that now *every time* someone logs in, they have to wait for the squashfs blocks that contain the GUI desktop code to get cached in RAM.
01:13<twb>Which is dumb, because the entire squashfs is 500MB and they have 2GB of RAM.
01:13-!-SpyderShell [~SpyderShe@114.69.233.62] has joined #debian
01:14<twb>plan B is to basically just "nice ionice -c3 cat filesystem.squashfs >/dev/null" at boot time, rather than cherry-picking "likely" blocks

01:17<jm_>have you looked at packages like preload or readahead-fedora?
01:18<twb>Well last time I asked ISTR being told "oh use <this one> it only LOOKS abandoned, actually it's the best and I still maintain it"
01:18<twb>Also since then it looks like systemd absorbed readahead, then deprecated it.
01:18<twb>Though I guess that doesn't matter for wheezy :-)

02:25<jjacklin>just a quick one though, you know you can copy a debian iso to usb and it just boots does that only apply to debian?
02:26<jm_>jjacklin: no, many other images support that
02:26<jm_>guilherme: try #debian-next
02:26<guilherme>thanks!

02:28<somiaj>guilherme: though general rule, is if you want to make debian more secure you start by running stable. Testing has terrible security support (as in it has none and lots of time waits for security fixes to filter though sid)
02:29<guilherme>the problem is the hardware. It is quite new and aI am not sure if the hardware is supported
02:30<twb>guilherme: you can install the backported kernel
02:30<twb>That solves most of it
02:31<somiaj>many new hardware is supported via a backported kernel. Usually that gets all the core hardware. Newer video cards tend to be the most difficult to deal with as they also require a newer xorg driver.
02:31<guilherme>ok
02:31<somiaj>but if you don't mind non-free driers, those are also backported.
02:32<twb>or if it's a server, you don't care about pictures on the screen anyways :P

02:33<guilherme>no, it is a personal computer. In fact I do not think it is a really critical problem. I am just wondering if I can do more for security
02:34-!-Corey84 is now known as Guest1580
02:35<twb>This really weird thing has been happening lately on my wheezy kiosks -- when I shut down or reboot, the screen brightness seems to be set to very very dim in between X going away and plymouth starting up after kexec
02:35<somiaj>You can, I was just commenting running stable is a good first step. After that there are some policies and pratices that can help keep you more secure that would apply across the versions of debain.
02:35<twb>I guess it probably happened around the time I switched from 3.14 to 3.16 backport...
02:35<twb>!hardening
02:35<dpkg>To secure and harden a Debian GNU/Linux system, ask me about <securing debian> and <security>. See also <security backports>, <tracker of doom>, <d:sbd>, <grsecurity>, <exec shield>.
02:35<somiaj>twb: still have the older backport kernel floating around, see if it is a change in the kernel?
02:36<twb>somiaj: I'm not too worried for now, just asking in case someone knows off top of head

03:48-!-lpalgarvio [~lpalgarvi@fw.emakina.com] has joined #debian
03:48<jm_>twb: that's interesting, are the CPU-s fast enough as far as decompression goes?
03:49<twb>meh, all desktop weenie CPUs are fast enough
03:49-!-lpalgarvio is now known as Guest1584
03:49<twb>I mean: windows requirements go up faster than anything I distribute, so it's never an issue
03:49<jm_>I was thinkiong that may be the factor, but if it's not, then I can't imagine why 6x difference
03:50<twb>jm_: because it takes five of the six seconds to copy the squashfs blocks from the NFS server and decompress them I guess
03:50<twb>But it can do *all* of the blocks in 30s so I want to just do that at power on
03:50<jm_>twb: yeah but that has to happen in both cases, doesn't it?
03:51<twb>yeah but because it happens before they sit down and start typing, it's not user perceived
03:51<twb>Assuming the machines are WoL'd each morning
03:51<twb>or even just that they turn the machine on then make a coffee
03:51<jm_>but isn't six-fold speedup measuring the same thing - starting of an app?
03:51<twb>And because the find is ionice'd it won't interfere with them if they try using it before then
03:52<twb>jm_: oh sorry. it's a sixfold speedup in *user perceived* delay
03:53<twb>So the user process is something like turn the machine on, walk away for a minute, come back and try to open libreoffice writer. Timing how long libreoffice window takes to appear
03:53<twb>goes from 6s to 1s
03:53<twb>This is the same speedup as if you just open libreoffice, close it, then time how long it takes to reopen
03:54<jm_>twb: and how fast is it if you preload squasfs image itself only?
03:54<twb>that only saves about 1s
03:54<twb>i.e. 6s -> 5s
03:54<jm_>interesting
03:56<twb>So apparently of the 4.3W my chromebook is using, about 1.68W (40%) is the HDMI port. Switching to onboard display drops power consumption to 2.62W

05:57<ThCTLo>hai, if have a quick question. When i type mount i see : /dev/xvdb5 on /home/samba type ext4 (rw,relatime,user_xattr,barrier=1,data=ordered)
05:57<ThCTLo> but im missing the acl options in this. acl is default enabled in the kernel, do i still need to add acl to fstabl to make it work, i thought not, so just asking..
05:58<ThCTLo>fstab now shows : /home/samba ext4 user_xattr 0 2
05:58<ThCTLo>or is the following needed in fstab : /home/samba ext4 defaults,user_xattr 0 2 ?

08:22<husein>blast007 : I was instructed to configure the dhcp-server in a server, and I just configured his usual dhcp-server on the router, the IP on the server I use is 10.10.35.1/29 and the ip range that will be given to the client in the dhcp-server configuration is 172.16 .35.51-172.16.35.100 with subnet 255.255.255.128. I'm confused about is how do it so that the client can get the ip of the server by passing the first router
08:23-!-jl [~jl@111-19-190-109.dsl.ovh.fr] has quit []
08:23<planetmaker>Brigo, one try ended at line 2853. you see there a jump in time in syslog to the next line; probably due to resync with dns after forced reboot
08:23<blast007>husein: usually you'd configure the router to have an ip-helper pointing to the DHCP server, so then it converts the client's DHCP broadcast to a unicast
08:24<blast007>husein: the other option is configuring a computer on the client network as a DHCP relay that does the same thing

17:27<babylon>a netinstall will always download such volume of data
17:27<jcarlos>babylon: I know I can try, but perhaps you know the answer. Can I install a minimal debian system with my netinst installer?
17:27<babylon>netinstall = downloading the packages to be installed from the net
17:28<jcarlos>babylon: Yes, I know, but I can do that during the night
17:28<babylon>a minimal debian install is possible with netinstaller or any other kind of installer
17:28<babylon>minimal install means that you will not install the default meta packages used by desktop environments like gnome, xfce or kde
17:29<babylon>it doenst matter which installer you use
17:29<babylon>all can do the same things
17:29<jcarlos>Soooooo ... I can do a minimal install, then install firmware-iwlwifi package (I have that package downloaded), then configure the wifi network)

17:30<babylon>how i would do it from easy to less easy:
17:30<babylon>1. use cable and install non-free firmware after installation

17:31<babylon>3. use normal installer like netinstall and make sure that you can install the non-free wifi firmware from usb

22:45<abrotman>twb: So you want udev to generate an email to guards that someone has plugged in a .. device?
22:45<abrotman>any device?

22:47<twb>Initially I want udev to run my script on any USB device insertion, and my script will have a whitelist of expected vendor:product pairs (e.g. keyboards)
22:48<twb>I would just do this via logcheck, since the kenrel already reports those pairs, but the alerting has to be done in near-real-time so that the guards can burst in and seize the contraband device
22:48<abrotman>but if they're just charging them, what's the issue?
22:48<abrotman>"just" :)
22:48<abrotman>Oh, not spuposed to have them
22:50<Smirker>Hi, with Debian Wheezy, I recently copied an installation running on a USB stick to 2x HDD running RAID 1 on Intel RSTe (fakeraid). I managed to boot into Debian but couldn't see anything in /dev/mapper. I ran apt-get install dmraid. I tried dmraid -ay but it reported something about a table, but it could find the RAID. When I rebooted, suddenly the kernel couldn't boot because it couldn't find
22:50<Smirker>any partitions. I've tried a few things but can't get the OS to boot any more.
22:50<Smirker>Does anyone have any suggestions? Even a way to reverse whatever happened?
22:51<twb>abrotman: yeah sorry, I wasn't very clear
22:52<abrotman>twb: http://www.opensourceforu.com/2012/06/some-nifty-udev-rules-and-examples/ seems a bit more useful?
22:52*abrotman waves
22:52*twb looks
22:52*abrotman still waves
22:53<twb>Huh, BUS=="usb" -- I was tryin SUBSYSTEM=="usb"
22:55<twb>http://sprunge.us/gffh?sh is my cargo-cult stub so far
22:55<twb>the path part should be fine because I'm already launching other udev scripts from there
22:55<twb>and if I run it by hand I see stuff in syslog, so the script itself is working.
